Canada’s headline inflation had climbed to 2.4% in December 2025 from 2.2% in November, marking a three-month high and coming in above market expectations for an unchanged reading. Despite the United States pushing to acquire Greenland, geological and technical constraints have so far prevented any country – including China – from successfully extracting and processing one of the Danish territory’s main critical minerals, a New York-based mining investor said. “In the Arctic, one of the popular – the sort of commonly occurring mineral – is called eudialyte,” said Tomasz Nadrowski, portfolio manager at Amvest Terraden, an investment and corporate finance firm specialising in natural resources. “So far, no one has managed to successfully extract and separate rare earth oxides from eudialyte: not the Germans, not the Finns, not the Chinese, not the Russians.” Advertisement “Maybe science will find a solution one day, but not today.” The stakes are high. Volkswagen AG plans to increase exports of cars made in China as the manufacturer tries to benefit from the Asian country’s low production costs amid a bruising price war there. The German automaker has started shipping vehicles from China to the Middle East and South East Asia. It’s also eying selling its new Chinese models in Africa and South America, Chief Executive Officer Oliver Blume told reporters in Berlin. “The technologies and products developed in China open up new export opportunities for us — in regions that we previously couldn’t effectively serve from Europe,” Blume said. “This is an important strategic lever for the Volkswagen group.” The automaker has been overhauling its presence in China to better compete in a market where local manufacturers led by BYD Co. have taken over in electric vehicles. The company has slashed manufacturing costs by shifting more research and development to China and partnering on software with local manufacturer Xpeng Inc. Volkswagen plans to introduce 20 new electrified vehicles in the world’s biggest car market this year. The push is meant to help arrest a sales slide that slashed the company’s Chinese deliveries to around 2.7 million last year, from more than 4 million before the pandemic. The slump in China has been especially bruising for Volkswagen’s Porsche AG , with the brand’s sales in the country cratering amid muted luxury demand. By Jonathan Stempel Jan 28 (Reuters) - Google will pay $135 million to settle a proposed class action by smartphone users ​who accused Google of programming its Android operating system ‌to collect their cellular data without permission. A preliminary settlement with the Alphabet unit ‌was filed late Tuesday night in the San Jose, California federal court, and requires a judge's approval. Google denied wrongdoing in agreeing to the settlement, which covers users of Android-powered mobile devices since November ⁠12, 2017. Users said Google ‌needlessly collected cellular data, which they purchased from mobile carriers, even when they closed Google's apps, ‍disabled location-sharing or locked their screens. They said the data supported Google's product development and targeted advertising campaigns and amounted to "conversion," when a party wrongfully ​takes another party's property with the intent to assert ‌control. As part of the settlement, Google will not transfer data without obtaining consent from Android users when they set up their phones. The Mountain View, California-based company will also make it easier for users to stop the transfers by toggling, and will disclose the ⁠transfers in its Google Play terms ​of service. Glen Summers, a lawyer for the ​plaintiffs, said in a court filing he believed the $135 million payout is the largest ever in a ‍conversion case. Payments are ⁠capped at $100 per class member. A trial had been scheduled for August 5. Google had no immediate comment on Wednesday. ⁠The plaintiffs' lawyers may seek up to $39.8 million, or 29.5% of the settlement ‌fund, for legal fees. When you’d like to be writing a blog while your plane is taking off, and large electronics (Computer) must be stowed? When you’re sitting on the couch putting together a grocery order, and Computer is in the other room? When your job is to write blog posts, but you weren’t allowed to bring Computer into the keynote venue? These are real scenarios in which I’ve used the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 over the past month. Each offers a large inner screen that is, at a minimum, lots of space for watching videos, reading posts, whatever it is you normally do on your phone. But I’ve been pushing them into Computer territory lately, with largely excellent results. It's up to you to decide a number that's right for you. Experts suggest aiming to replace 80% of your working income to maintain your current standard of living. Example scenario Let's say you currently earn $100,000 a year. That means you're aiming to bring in $80,000 annually in retirement. The first thing you want to do is subtract from that amount any guaranteed income. For example, if you're expecting $2,500 from Social Security each month and $500 from a retirement annuity, that's a total of $3,000, or $36,000 a year. Once you subtract that guaranteed income from $80,000, you're left with $44,000 to save for. Divide that amount by 12 to determine how much you want to bring in each month. In this case, it's $3,666.
