(RTTNews) - European stocks closed higher on Monday with investors largely making their moves reacting or looking ahead to earnings updates, and digesting some corporate news. Investors also awaited the European Central Bank's upcoming decision, expecting a 25 bps rate cut later this week. Data showing much less than expected growth in China's exports and imports in September weighed a bit on sentiment. A much-anticipated Chinese stimulus announcement over the weekend also failed to inspire confidence among investors. The pan European Stoxx 600 climbed 0.53%. The U.K.'s FTSE 100 gained 0.47%, Germany's DAX ended up 0.69% and France's CAC 40 closed 0.32% up, while Switzerland's SMI advanced 0.86%. Among other markets in Europe, Belgium, Ireland, Netherlands, Russia, Spain and Sweden ended higher. Austria, Finland, Greece, Iceland, Poland, Portugal and Turkiye closed weak, while Denmark and Norway ended flat. Shares of designer goods manufacturers fell as investors remained jittery over anemic China demand for European designer goods. In the UK market, Vistry Group climbed nearly 4.5%. Bunzl, SSE, BAE Systems and Severn Trent gained 2 to 2.5%, while United Utilities advanced nearly 2%. Pershing Square Holdings, Sage Group, AstraZeneca, Smiths Group, Coca-Cola HBC, Centrica, EasyJet, Sainsbury (J), Hikma Pharmaceuticals, Diploma, Intertek Group, Compass Group, National Grid and Halma climbed 1 to 1.6%. Mulberry Group shares jumped over 20% following a revised possible takeover offer from Frasers Group Plc. Entain tumbled 8% following a report that the Labour government is considering an up to £3 billion tax hit on the gambling sector in this month's Budget. One of my bigger mistakes in the last few years was probably to underestimate how much companies like Meta Platforms ( META ), Amazon ( AMZN ), Alphabet ( GOOG ) ( GOOGL ), or OpenAI must spend to build out the infrastructure necessary for running AI applications. Subsequently, I also underestimated how much revenue companies like NVIDIA Corporation ( NVDA ) would generate and what growth rates these companies would report. While NVIDIA is the poster child of the AI hardware and infrastructure company, it also includes Broadcom Inc. ( AVGO ), which I rated as a “Hold” several times in the last 13 months. Since my first article about Broadcom was published in December 2024, an investment would have returned about 36.5% (including dividends) and therefore clearly outperformed the S&P 500 ( SPY ), which had an impressive run itself. In my last article in October 2025, I rated Broadcom as a “Hold” once again, and this time, being cautious was obviously the right call so far. Since the article was published, the S&P 500 still increased slightly (about 1%), while Broadcom declined 14%. In the conclusion of my last article, I wrote: In my opinion, Broadcom is too expensive to be a good investment. Of course, I must admit that the stock was a great investment in the last five years, and I was clearly too pessimistic. The little EV maker still has a lot to prove. Rivian (RIVN 3.59%), a producer of electric vehicles, went public at $78 on Nov. 10, 2021. Today, its stock trades at $15. It initially attracted a lot of attention because it already delivered its first vehicles, and its top investors were Amazon (AMZN 0.94%) and Ford (F 1.07%). However, Rivian lost its luster after missing ambitious production targets, incurring steep losses, and failing to justify its sky-high valuations. Ford also scrapped its plans to co-develop an electric pickup with Rivian and liquidated most of its Rivian shares in 2022. But could this out-of-favor stock bounce back over the next five years? Why did Rivian’s stock collapse? Rivian produces three types of EVs: the R1T pickup truck, the R1S SUV, and custom electric delivery vans (EDVs) for Amazon and other companies. It plans to launch its third commercial vehicle, the R2 SUV, in the first half of 2026. When Rivian went public, it predicted it would produce 50,000 vehicles in 2022. Unfortunately, it produced only 24,337 cars and delivered 20,332, as it grappled with supply chain constraints. In 2023, it more than doubled its production to 57,232 and delivered 50,122 vehicles as it overcame those supply chain issues. In 2024, Rivian’s production dipped to 49,476 vehicles as inflation, high interest rates, lower EV subsidies, and competition throttled its expansion -- but its total deliveries still rose to 51,579 vehicles. For 2025, it expects to deliver only 40,000 to 46,000 cars, as macro and micro headwinds continue to impact its business. US stocks slid on Friday as President Trump said he would nominate Kevin Warsh to lead the Federal Reserve, against a background of a rising dollar and a screeching halt to 2026's roaring metals rally. The S&P 500 (^GSPC) and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) fell 0.7% and 0.9%, respectively, pointing to another down session for tech stocks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) dropped 0.9%. Markets are calculating the potential impact after Trump said he has chosen frontrunner Warsh as the US central bank's next chair. The former Fed governor has a hawkish record on interest rates but has recently voiced support for cuts — which Trump has aggressively campaigned for. The dollar (DX-Y.NYB) rose on the prospect of Warsh as the Fed's leader. Meanwhile, gold (GC=F) and silver (SI=F) plunged, putting the brakes on runaway rallies. Gold fell below the $5,000 level, while silver sank as much as 25%. In addition, the watch is on for the next trade move from Trump, who threatened to hit Canadian aircraft imports with a 50% tariff. The US would also decertify all new jets from the likes of Bombardier (BDRBF), Trump said, claiming Canada has used certification hurdles to effectively ban the sale of US Gulfstream jets. Meanwhile, Mexico is facing new levies after Trump promised to impose new tariffs on countries providing oil to Cuba. On the earnings front, Apple's (AAPL) shares fell 2% after its results closed out a mixed bag of Big Tech reports for the week. While its quarterly profit topped estimates, fueled by record iPhone sales, its CEO Tim Cook warned the global memory shortage would hit future margins. The Federal Reserve held its target range for the federal funds rate constant in January 2026 at 3.5–3.75 percent. This decision was consistent with market expectations for the path of the federal funds rate, which for weeks had indicated that the Fed would hold rates steady at its January meeting. It is also consistent with rates prescribed by leading monetary policy rules. Notably, Governors Stephen Miran and Christopher Waller dissented from the decision, with both favoring a 25-basis point cut. At the post-meeting press conference , Powell pointed to elevated inflation and a stabilizing labor market to explain the Fed’s decision to hold rates steady. He said Fed officials now “see the current stance of monetary policy as appropriate to promote progress” toward both sides of the dual mandate. Previously, Fed officials had expressed concern about the tensions facing the Fed’s dual mandate amid a softening labor market. Powell said that available data show “economic activity has been expanding at a solid pace,” driven primarily by consumer spending and business fixed investment. He acknowledged the lingering effects of last fall’s prolonged government shutdown but suggested that any drag on activity in the third and fourth quarters of last year will likely be reversed in the first quarter of 2026. After softening for much of last year, labor market conditions now appear to be stabilizing, Powell explained. The World Trade Organization has faulted the United States in a dispute brought by China over US green energy subsidies introduced under former US president Joe Biden, according to a ruling issued on Friday. The global trade body’s dispute panel said that large tax credits granted under Biden’s landmark climate law, the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), were “inconsistent” with several WTO agreements and should be withdrawn. After a strong start of 2025, investors' enthusiasm was curbed after the Q3 release when in spite of the better-than-expected top and bottom-line figures, Uber's Q4 guidance came somewhat below expectations. As a result, the stock has fallen by almost 20% since its all-time highs in the early October of last year and is once again trading at a cash flow multiple of below 20.
