Kirby ( KEX ) is the leading operator in inland barging (and the #2 player in coastal barging) and has a respectable operating history, but there’s little that management can do when the economy softens and refinery and chemical utilization weaken, driving lower demand for barging services. These conditions won’t be in place forever, but at this point it’s hard to call a turn in the economy. Kirby shares are basically flat since my last update . As has long been the case, this is a tough stock to benchmark, as there aren’t any true comps. Norfolk Southern ( NSC ) kind of sort of overlaps the same geography, and rail can be a competitor to barging, and this stock has done notably better. On the other hand, there’s also been at least some directional correlation between Kirby and WTI prices, and these two have traded pretty closely over the last 18 months or so. Data by YCharts When I last wrote about Kirby, I was concerned about the risk of buying in at or near a temporary peak, with high utilization driving higher rates and better margins. Business has eased off some since then, leading to a 2024 that was stronger than I modeled and a 2025 that was modestly weaker (about 5% below my prior revenue and EBITDA estimates). At this point I see a risk of “muddle through” performance until the U.S. economy picks up, but the valuation does look more interesting now even with that macro risk. Healthy Margins To Close The Year, But Iffy Guidance Kirby’s fiscal fourth quarter results were basically okay relative to sell-side expectations.
