The Roundhill Magnificent Seven Covered Call ETF ( MAGY ) is a good example. This is not an income ETF that happens to own technology stocks, but a portfolio-level trade-off applied to the most concentrated equity exposure in the market. Fund Details The Roundhill Magnificent Seven Covered Call ETF has around $230 million in assets under management, at a gross expense ratio of 1.29% and a net expense ratio of 0.99%. This is a bit higher than that of similar funds like Global X NASDAQ 100 Covered Call ETF, but not hugely so. The fund aims to distribute on a weekly basis, and offers a distribution rate of around 34%. The distribution rate reflects an annualized snapshot of the most recent option income relative to NAV, assuming current volatility persists, and should not be interpreted as a sustainable yield or an indicator of expected total return. What MAGY Actually Does To Your Risk Covered call ETFs appear to offer enticing yields with relatively low risk. They essentially do three things. Firstly, they own the underlying basket of stocks. In this case, that's the Magnificent Seven (Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Nvidia, Meta, and Tesla). Together these stocks account for around 40% of the NASDAQ-100 index. Secondly, they sell covered calls on these stocks. Each month, the fund sells call options tied to the Magnificent Seven basket. By doing this, it agrees to give up gains above a certain price level (the strike) in exchange for upfront cash (the option premium). The option premium MAGY collects is effectively payment for selling volatility, meaning the fund is being compensated for taking the opposite side of uncertainty in these stocks rather than for reducing risk. Shareholders were set to be rewarded with a planned doubling in production over the next five years, marking it as one of the fastest-growing miners in the sector. That growth story, however, is set to end with Hong Kong–listed Zijin Gold International ( ZJNGF ) offering C$44 (~$32.30) per share in an all-cash deal valuing the company at roughly C$5.5 billion. The bid arrives against a backdrop of record gold prices, cash-rich miners, and accelerating consolidation across the sector. I previously covered Allied Gold last November, assigning the company’s shares a “Strong Buy” rating based on its growth prospects and low valuation. From then until this takeover offer, the shares have risen nearly 80%. However, this offer remains below my fair value target of $37.62 per share by 2029 based on a $3,600/oz gold price, suggesting it isn’t the best deal for shareholders. China is looking to escalate measures against cybercriminals operating inside and outside its borders by banning convicted citizens from leaving the country, even after they have completed their sentence. The draft Cybercrime Prevention and Control Law bill comes as China doubles down on working with Southeast Asian countries to crack down on cross-border online fraud. The bill, which aims to impose an exit ban on Chinese found guilty of cross-border online crimes for up to three years after serving their sentence, was announced by Beijing’s public security ministry on Saturday. It will be open for public comment until next month.
