UK grocery price inflation eased to its lowest level since April, as Britons opted for supermarkets’ own-brand products and promotional items. Like-for-like grocery inflation edged down to 4% in the four weeks to Jan. 25 from a year earlier, according to a report from Worldpanel by Numerator on Tuesday, offering a degree of respite for cash-strapped customers. Meanwhile spending on promotional items rose 10.9% year-on-year, a sign supermarkets stepped up marketing efforts, with full-price sales rising by just 1.7%. Purchases of supermarkets’ own-brand products accounted for more than half of total grocery spend, the highest level on record. The latest data points to the continuing strain on household budgets, after some supermarkets reported weaker-than-expected sales over the key Christmas period. Though the pace eased last month, grocery prices are still rising faster than the wider UK inflation rate, which the Bank of England expects to fall back toward its 2% target next quarter. Read More: UK’s Biggest Retailers Set Back by Grim Sales at Christmas “For most shoppers, January is all about resetting household budgets, and this year was no exception,” said Fraser McKevitt , head of retail and consumer insight at Worldpanel. “While grocery sales continue to grow and inflation eased to its lowest level in months, value remained front of mind for many.” Discounter Lidl was the fastest-growing bricks-and-mortar grocer in the latest data, with sales up 10.1% over the 12 weeks to Jan. 25 from a year earlier.
