Zimbabwe’s High court said Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd. ’s local unit is not liable to pay mining royalties of $7.1 million on exports matte and concentrates. The court ruled in favor of Zimplats after the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority determined the company owed royalties for the period between June 2018 and December 2021. The court said that no royalty rate had been set for such products over that period. “It is therefore my considered view that matte and concentrate, as mineral-bearing products, cannot attract the same royalties as minerals that have gone through the refinery process,” High Court Judge Rodgers Manyangadze said in his ruling. Zimbabwe has the world’s third-largest platinum reserves after South Africa and Russia and South Africa and generates more than half of its revenues from mineral exports. Although last Friday’s 10% and 29% collapse in gold and silver prices doubled the 1M realized volatility of the two metals, the comparable maturity implied volatilities for GLD and SLV were significantly more well behaved and essentially followed skew downwards from 38.6 to 35.8 (GLD) and from 103.7 to 86.1 (SLV). As a result, ATM options on the metals are currently cheaper both from a nominal and from a percentage of spot standpoint than they were last Thursday. That being said, implied vols for GLD and SLV remain near historic 7th standard deviation highs. To discern near-term options sentiment, we compare the current 1M skew for both metals against the same measure in mid-Jan when gold and silver prices were at present levels (i.e., 1/21/26 for GLD, 1/12/26 for SLV). We find gold skew currently shows a similar constructive risk profile albeit with less defensive positioning (i.e., flatter put skew) whereas positioning in silver has a comparatively higher bullish tilt (i.e., steeper call skew) on heavy volume (2x typical levels). The yield curve has remained relatively flat post-FOMC but with the shift in rates policy expectations, rates volatility has meandered upwards with the VIXTLT currently trading up 13pts w/w to 83 (21st percentile). Likewise, as the USD bounces off its 4-year lows, FX vols have risen w/w and now trades at 55th percentile levels. Meta Platforms' stock looks ready to rebound in 2026 after a lackluster 2025 performance. 2025 was a tough year for the stock of Meta Platforms (META 1.34%). Like many other top artificial intelligence (AI) companies, the social media company benefited from its AI initiatives; however, its stock performance badly lagged the market. That said, its stock underperformance had nothing to do with its operational performance throughout the year. The company grew its revenue by a robust 22% in 2025 to $201 million, with its Q4 revenue growth even stronger, coming in at 24%. Meanwhile, Meta sees no sign of its growth slowing down, with the company forecasting its revenue growth will accelerate in Q1 to between 26% to 34%. AI powers Meta's ad revenue growth Meta has been using AI to improve its recommendation algorithm to keep users on its sites longer, which is leading to more opportunities to serve ads. At the same time, the company has developed a generative ads recommendation model (GEM) that can bring together a user's engagement across Meta's platforms to deliver more personalized ads. Meanwhile, it has started using sequence learning, which takes into account the order of users' interactions to help recognize a high intent to purchase. For example, if within a two-day period a user searched for "Yellowstone National Park," watched a Reel on photography, and then read an article on the best lens for landscape photography, AI could identify that this user has a high intent to buy a camera lens for an upcoming trip. Retailers that sell photography equipment and camera equipment brands could then bid more aggressively and even tailor ads specifically for that user.
