Taiwan has firmly ruled out any large-scale relocation of its semiconductor industry. In fact, it says shifting 40% of its chip capacity to the United States is “impossible.” Vice Premier Cheng Li-chiun said Taiwan has clearly conveyed to Washington that its semiconductor ecosystem — built over decades across manufacturing, packaging and supply chains — cannot be moved. She stressed that Taiwan’s capacity will continue to grow. Meanwhile, companies will expand their overseas presence. Cheng added that international investments, including in the U.S., will be based on the principle that Taiwan remains the core base of operations. She also said there are no plans to relocate Taiwan’s science parks. However, the island is open to sharing its expertise to help the U.S. develop its own semiconductor ecosystem. Her comments come after U.S. officials argued that chip manufacturing needs to shift away from Taiwan due to security concerns. Their stated goal is to bring 40% of leading-edge semiconductor production to the U.S. Taiwan has rejected similar proposals in the past. Last month, Taiwan and the U.S. agreed to reduce tariffs on the island’s exports to 15% from 20%. This move comes alongside increased Taiwanese investment in America. Taiwan said its overall semiconductor capacity — including projects under construction and in planning — will far exceed its overseas assets. TSMC, the world’s largest contract chipmaker, is already investing $165 billion to build manufacturing facilities in Arizona. Ready to invest like a pro? Posts from this author will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed. Warner Bros. Discovery has announced that streaming service HBO Max will make its long-awaited debut in the UK and Ireland on March 26th, having previously promised that a launch would happen in early 2026. Until now, most HBO content has been exclusively available in the UK through Sky or the streaming service Now TV. In the UK, the cheapest tier, Basic with Ads, will cost £4.99 per month, with Standard with Ads for £5.99. The standard plan without ads will cost £9.99, and the Premium plan will be £14.99. There’ll be changes for TNT Sports customers too, who from March 26 will access their sports content through HBO Max, rather than through Discovery Plus. Warner Bros. Discovery intends to split into two companies later this year, spinning off Discovery and its news programming into a separate business. If everything goes according to plan, Netflix will buy the entertainment side of the business, including HBO Max, though the deal still isn’t final.

Meta Platforms Inc (META, Financials) came under fire as European Union regulators charged the company with breaching antitrust laws by allegedly blocking rival AI services from integrating with its WhatsApp messaging platform. The European Commission's complaint targets Meta's handling of the WhatsApp Business API, which regulators argue could be a crucial channel for chatbot developers and AI services. Authorities are considering interim measures to halt the conduct while the investigation proceeds. Meta disputed the Commission's premise. In a statement, a company spokesperson said the API is not essential to AI distribution, citing other access points through operating systems, devices, websites, and app stores. Meta added that the EU's logic incorrectly assumes WhatsApp is a gatekeeper for chatbot adoption. The study is part of the EU's larger effort to make sure that digital marketplaces are fair, especially as generative AI technology grow more used in business tools and messaging applications. The verdict puts more regulatory pressure on Meta, which is already being looked at for its dominance in social media and advertising. Investors will keep an eye on what happens as the corporation deals with legal issues and grows its AI projects on all of its platforms.

Welcome to our guide to the commodities driving the global economy. Today, reporter Anthony Di Paola looks at reactions to the first round of US-Iran talks. Oil prices are sending a pretty clear signal on the first round of US-Iran negotiations aimed at avoiding war: Talking is good. Brent crude opened lower on Monday following discussions in Oman about Iran’s nuclear ambitions. President Donald Trump said the talks were “ very good ” and would continue this week, while his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian called them “ a step forward .” It’s a positive start, but oil traders can’t completely relax just yet. Brent is still up more than 10% since the start of the year, and some of that premium is related to geopolitical tensions in the Persian Gulf. “The Iranian risk premium cannot be fully defused as long as US warships are located where they are with their guns and rockets pointing toward Iran,” SEB’s chief commodities analyst Bjarne Schieldrop said in a note. Even with the positive start to the talks, there are still plenty of potential sticking points . While Trump has repeatedly said Iran must be prevented from gaining a nuclear weapon, other officials such as Secretary of State Marco Rubio have said negotiations should be much broader — addressing Iran’s ballistic missile program and funding of proxy groups in regional states, like Lebanon and Yemen. Iranian officials have stressed that they will only entertain negotiations around the nuclear program. Trump, who sent his Middle East envoy and long-time New York real estate pal Steve Witkoff along with son-in-law Jared Kushner to Oman, said over the weekend that a deal restricted to the nuclear program would be acceptable. A limited accord may be what the president needs. Avoiding war in the Middle East and being able to crow about lower US gasoline prices would be a short-term win for the administration ahead of mid-term elections. But Trump is unpredictable. The last time his administration was talking to...

Venture capitalist and Palantir (NASDAQ:PLTR) chairman Peter Thiel has long argued that the real bottleneck in innovation isn't brainpower but bravery, the willingness to back an idea most people think is wrong. Thiel Says Genius Means Little Without Courage Speaking in 2015 about his book ‘Zero to One: Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future’ at an event hosted by the Independent Institute, Thiel said many people are smart enough to spot opportunities, but far fewer are willing to pursue them when they cut against conventional wisdom. The line that has since become one of his most quoted takes is blunt. "Brilliant thinking is rare, but courage is in even shorter supply than genius," he writes. In the talk, Thiel explained that entrepreneurship defies formulas because every breakthrough company is a one-off. Copying the "next Mark Zuckerberg" or "next Bill Gates," he said, misses the point that iconic businesses were built by doing something fundamentally new, not by following a template. Contrarian Questions Test Unpopular Truths And Nerve To get at that, he leans on what he calls a contrarian question, asking, "Tell me something true that very few people agree with you on." Good answers, he argued, are inherently uncomfortable because they surface "secret" or unpopular truths. Many candidates default to safe complaints about politics or education that everyone already accepts. The real test, Thiel said, is whether someone will voice a view their interviewer might strongly disagree with, or a social hurdle that, in his view, makes courage rarer than intelligence, especially when ideas defy prevailing norms. Millions of people are failing to get to grips with planning for retirement, according to research from Which?. The consumer group said that its survey of 2,039 UK adults found that 44% of respondents had put off thinking about retirement as it was too stressful. Two-thirds of respondents said that they'd prefer to do other tasks – even those considered unpleasant or uncomfortable – over sitting down to sort out their pensions. For instance, one in eight said they would rather go to the dentist than spend an hour planning their retirement. Meanwhile, 27% said that they would prefer to do a deep clean of the bathroom and 7% would rather sit an exam. Read more: Why it might be OK to have a secret savings account The research also showed that half of UK adults do not feel confident that they are saving enough for retirement and 48% said they do not know how much money would be required to have a comfortable retirement. Which? cited data from Pensions UK, which showed a single-person household would need at least £13,400 a year for a minimum standard of living. That would cover costs including just over £100 a week on groceries and a week-long UK break each year. A household would require £31,700 for a moderate standard of living and £43,900 for a "comfortable" standard of living, including multiple holidays and a three-year old car replaced every five years. Jenny Ross, money editor at Which?, said: "Our research has shown that millions of people across the country feel unprepared for retirement, and are often too stressed or overwhelmed to sit down and take stock of their pension savings."
