Microsoft's latest earnings numbers didn't impress investors Last month, Microsoft released its second-quarter earnings, which covered the last three months of 2025. It was a solid quarter for the business as revenue of $81.3 billion was up 17% year over year. But what seemed to alarm investors was a worse-than-expected growth rate in its cloud business, Azure. At 39%, it was slightly below what analysts expected and down from 40% growth in the previous period. Azure is a key growth catalyst for Microsoft, and any hint of a slowdown there can often raise concerns for growth investors, which appears to be what has happened here. This is even as CEO Satya Nadella speaks fondly of the company's growing artificial intelligence (AI) business, saying that the company is "only at the beginning phases of AI diffusion and already Microsoft has built an AI business that is larger than some of our biggest franchises." But there's another asset it pays to hold in your portfolio -- real estate investment trusts, or REITs. REITs are companies that make money by operating different types of real estate portfolios. What makes them a valuable retirement investment is the fact that they're required to distribute at least 90% of their taxable income to shareholders. For this reason, REITs often have more generous yields than traditional dividend stocks. And because real estate values have a tendency to rise over time, some REITs may provide some protection against inflation. Of course, if you're going to hold REITs in retirement, they should be part of a broader investment strategy. REITs shouldn't be the only source of income you have on top of Social Security. The Hang Seng Index now sits just above the 27,025-point plateau and it's got a positive lead for Tuesday's trade. The global forecast for the Asian markets is cautiously optimistic amidst an extended rebound among technology companies and ahead of key U.S. data later this week. The European and U.S. markets were up and the Asian bourses are expected to follow that lead. The Hang Seng finished sharply higher on Monday following gains from the financial shares, property stocks and technology companies.
