On February 9, the rule of law and justice scored another victory in Hong Kong when a local court sentenced Jimmy Lai Chee-ying to 20 years in prison for violating the national security law. This sends a clear and resounding message to the world that Hong Kong is a society rigorously governed by law, and any lawbreakers will be brought to justice. Lai reaped what he sowed. The evidence of his crimes is irrefutable. He relentlessly pushed for so-called international lobbying , went to great lengths to meet US politicians to plead for foreign sanctions against China and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. He even continued his anti-China activities after the Hong Kong national security law had come into effect. He had not the least qualms about being called a traitor for openly declaring that he was fighting for the United States and inviting the US and other foreign forces to interfere in Hong Kong affairs . These were not isolated incidents but a true reflection of his numerous crimes endangering Hong Kong. Smartphone policies in English secondary schools are a “huge drain” on resources, with staff spending on average more than 100 hours a week enforcing restrictions, according to research. Teachers, teaching assistants, caretakers and receptionists are involved with helping to police pupils’ smartphone use in school, researchers said, with multiple staff recording incidents, overseeing detentions and communicating with parents. The research by Birmingham University, published in the British Medical Journal, comes after the government issued new guidance advising schools to be phone-free, including during breaks and lunchtimes. The schools watchdog Ofsted will inspect how schools implement the policy. This week the NASUWT teaching union urged the government to introduce a statutory requirement – rather than just guidance – for schools to lock away pupils’ mobile phones for the whole school day. The study provides the first analysis of the economic impact of smartphone policies in schools and is based on data drawn from a nationally representative sample of 20 schools in England, 13 of which have “restrictive” policies and seven “permissive” policies. According to the research, restrictive policies require phones to be turned off and hidden in a school bag or handed in to reception throughout the school day, while permissive policies allow use during breaks and lunchtime. The self-reported data showed that on average, schools with restrictive policies spend 102 hours – or the full-time equivalent of 3.1 staff a week overall – on implementing policies. Aerobic exercise such as running, swimming or dancing can be considered a frontline treatment for mild depression and anxiety, according to research that suggests working out with others brings the most benefits. Scientists analysed published reviews on exercise and mental health and found that some of the greatest improvements were observed in young adults and new mothers – groups that are considered particularly vulnerable to mental health problems. While aerobic group exercise emerged as the most effective physical activity for reducing depression and anxiety, low-intensity programmes that lasted only a couple of months may be best for anxiety, the researchers said. “Exercise can have a similar effect, and sometimes a stronger impact, than traditional treatments,” said Neil Munro, a psychologist at James Cook University in Queensland, Australia. “Getting moving, in whatever shape or form works best for each person, can help mitigate depression and anxiety symptoms.” The researchers analysed data from 63 published reviews that looked at the impact of exercise on depression or anxiety in nearly 80,000 volunteers. The study aimed to identify the effect of exercise across all ages, and in pregnant women and new mothers. The exercises ranged from resistance training and aerobic workouts to mind-body activities such as yoga and tai chi. Forms of aerobic exercise that boosted the heart rate had the biggest impact on depression, with resistance training and yoga having a lesser effect. A similar trend was seen for anxiety but the impact was smaller, the study found. Further benefits were seen in people who took part in group exercise or supervised activities, the researchers write in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. However, there are plenty of high-quality income funds that still trade at reasonable valuations. BlackRock Energy & Resources Trust ( BGR ) operates as a closed-end fund that aims to provide attractive total returns from its diversified portfolio of energy assets. The fund provides direct exposure to some of the highest quality energy companies in the world, and the focus on income can be great for investors that want to create a sustainable stream of dividend income within their portfolio. Looking at the performance over the last twelve months, we can see that BGR's share price has increased by about 11.5%. Most of this increase happened over the last few months. When including all distributions that were paid out to shareholders, the total return jumps up to 21% over the same time frame. BGR now offers investors a starting dividend yield of about 7.8%. The fund's dividend coverage may be a bit inconsistent, but I believe that BGR has the power to keep payouts consistent over the next twelve months. The FCC's approval brings the size of Amazon's planned constellation of low Earth orbit satellites to roughly 7,700 satellites. The company has sent up more than 150 satellites since April using a variety of rocket launch providers. Amazon has said its goal is to begin providing satellite internet through its service called Leo later this year. The project was announced in 2019. Amazon's next set of satellites are its second generation of the orbital systems and they will operate at altitudes of up to about 400 miles, according to the notice. The additional satellites would add support for more frequency bands and extend Leo's geographic regions. The FCC said Amazon must launch 50% of the approved satellites by Feb. 10, 2032 and the remaining half by Feb. 10, 2035. Amazon is working to meet a separate deadline imposed by the FCC to deploy 1,600 of its first generation satellites before July 2026. Late last month, the company asked the agency to extend the cutoff to July 2028 or to waive the deadline altogether. The FCC hasn't ruled yet on the request. The company blamed delays beyond its control, including a near-term shortage of rockets to lift the satellites into orbit, on its likely inability to meet the deadline. Leo is "producing satellites considerably faster than others can launch them," the company wrote. The company has invested $10 billion to stand up its internet-from-space service. The company alluded to the possibility of going public in 2026 earlier last year, as the nuclear renaissance has reignited investor interest in the almost forgotten nuclear industry. While the public market has only seen junior companies so far, Holtec is coming to market after being in the game for decades. A Barron's article from June of last year estimates Holtec could be worth more than $10 billion on over $500 million of annual revenue, as the company attempts to pull off the first reactor restart in American history at the Palisades nuclear plant in Michigan .
