Volvo Car expects to hear from US authorities on whether it can keep selling in the world’s second-largest auto market in the coming months, according to Chief Executive Officer Hakan Samuelsson. The maker of the XC60 sport utility vehicle expects the US Commerce Department to announce its decision before the summer, the executive said Thursday. Owned by Geely, Volvo is working to avert a potential sales ban of vehicles that include software developed by Chinese-backed companies. “We will of course meet the requirements,” Samuelsson, 75, said in an interview. The US market is so important because sales for Western-linked brands are declining in China, where local manufacturers are taking over on EVs. Volvo operates a factory in South Carolina that shields it from US tariffs. It sold nearly 122,000 cars in the US last year, around 17% of its global total. Samuelsson is also pushing through cost cuts and rejuvenating the Swedish-origin automaker’s lineup. Roughly a year after being brought back as CEO by Geely’s billionaire owner Li Shufu, Samuelsson spoke with Bloomberg News about trade tensions, the impact of the Middle East conflict and prospects in the US. As I'm writing this article, the markets are back in the red, with all sectors down in the premarket session, except energy. History rhymes, and this has been the song all month. Notably, the selloff is broad, beyond large caps! In fact, in the last month, the Russell 2000 ( RTY ) has been down by 6.2%, several points more than the S&P 50 (not 500). For reference, I included the market tape below, as it provides a good read on what has been going on in the past few weeks. Guidance Terminal The selloff today seems to be driven by Iran’s rejection of the U.S.-proposed 15-point plan and its insistence that Tehran will dictate the terms and timing of the war’s conclusion. On the U.S. side, the White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, said Trump would hit Iran harder if Tehran did not accept that it had been defeated militarily. At the same time, the U.S. is sending several thousand troops from the 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East. Yes, yes, yes... I know what the bulls may say: the U.S. is using pressure tactics to force a favorable deal. At least, that is what some analysts think . However, I disagree, and in this piece, I will explain my view on what's likely to happen in the next few days and the implications for the broader markets.
