hh5800 Japan approved ¥631.5B (about $4B) in additional subsidies to hasten local chipmaker Rapidus' entry into the AI chipmaking space, Bloomberg News reported. The money is aimed at bankrolling Rapidus’ work for IT firm Fujitsu ( FJTSF ) ( FJTSY ), one of the initial clients that Japan hopes will get the key project off the ground, the report added . The funds increase the fees and investments that the government is injecting into the company to ¥2.6T (about $16.3B) by the end of the current fiscal year to March 2027, the report noted, citing a statement from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. The ministry said on Saturday that an external panel inspected Rapidus’ foundry in Hokkaido in northern Japan and approved its technological progress. On Saturday, Rapidus said that its plans and budget for fiscal year 2026 were approved by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, or NEDO. The approval covers two commissioned projects—research and development of 2 nm-generation semiconductor integration technology and short turnaround time (TAT) manufacturing technology based on Japan–U.S. collaboration; and development of chiplet, package design, and manufacturing technology for 2 nm-generation semiconductors. Minister Ryosei Akazawa told reporters at a Rapidus event in Hokkaido on Saturday that Japan is offering financial support to Rapidus to help it secure customers. The startup intends to make advanced 2-nanometer chips by 2027, a schedule Akazawa reaffirmed, and help Japan lower its dependence on industry leader Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing ( TSM ), the report noted. Rapidus, which was founded in 2022, intends to secure about ¥3T in private-sector financing, partly with the help of government loan guarantees, the report added, citing the Japanese ministry.
