There's still virtually no other price that speaks volumes about the state of global economies and geopolitics than that of oil. Now, we're reminded that the price of oil is global and set by the global market. The U.S. produces roughly 22-25% of oil and gas supplies globally. The magnitude of this Middle East crisis scathes all markets and countries, to greater and lesser degrees, based on their supply-demand fundamentals and export-import dynamics. Some Fundamentals The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) laid out its case for the rest of the year. In March, production of 7.5 million barrels per day (b/d) of crude oil production was shut in. April is projected at 9.1 million b/d of shut in production, assuming the conflict does not persist past April and that traffic through the Strait of Hormuz gradually resumes. Under those assumptions, shut-ins will fall to 6.7 million b/d in May and return close to pre-conflict levels in late 2026. OPEC recently highlighted that production has declined by 7.56M barrels per day to 22M in March owing to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. In this best-case scenario, the EIA says production resumes at full supply in late 2026, with global oil prices forecast at $96. As a top-producing oil and gas country now, the Dallas Fed found that oil prices in 2018 would have been roughly 36% higher had the shale revolution not occurred. They projected that the shale revolution showed a reduction in current oil price volatility of around 25%, with long-run volatility reduced over 50%. For all of the estimations, no one quite predicted such a cascade of effects and countermoves, leading to a large and unique cocktail of volatility. Interestingly, in an energy symposium last week, a top analyst from the Middle East highlighted how OPEC’s management of spare capacity offered the globe ...

OpenAI ( OPENAI ) said on Monday it will open its first permanent London office, with capacity for more than 500 employees, following the pause of a major AI infrastructure project in the U.K. The Microsoft-backed ( MSFT ) company said the site is expected to open in 2027. The U.S.-based AI firm is said to have signed the lease for an 88,500-square-foot space. In February, OpenAI announced it would make London its largest research hub outside the U.S. “The UK has an incredible depth of talent and a strong track record in AI,” Phoebe Thacker, London site lead at OpenAI, said in a statement, as per media reports. “London is already a key hub for our research and teams, and this new office gives us the space to keep building here.” OpenAI’s new office space will be located in the King’s Cross area of London, home to a slew of AI companies including Google DeepMind ( GOOG ), Meta ( META ) , Synthesia and Wayve. The news comes just days after OpenAI confirmed it had paused plans for its U.K. Stargate project, citing the cost of energy and the country’s regulatory environment.
