This Week This was one of those weeks we’ve seen on occasion in the last year (and especially since late October) where markets worry about artificial intelligence (AI). There were two flavors of concern: AI as disruptor: Anthropic’s new AI legal tool drove a selloff (especially) in software (including private markets) over fears AI will disrupt their businesses. AI is EXPENSIVE: GOOG announced plans to double its capex in 2026 to $175-$185 billion, while AMZN plans to boost capex in 2026 nearly 60% to $200 billion, renewing worries about the potential profitability of AI. Aside from AI, there were also three negative(ish) labor market reports (all with caveats): ADP showed the private sector added fewer jobs (+22,000) than expected in January (+45,000), but revised monthly gains have improved since last spring and stabilized at low levels. Initial claims rose (231,000) much more than expected (212,000), but this may be partly due to winter storm Fern and unusually cold weather. JOLTS job openings came in 700,000 lower than expected, but this doesn’t match private data like Indeed, and the hiring rate rose, while the layoff rate was steady at very low levels. So, after a bounce today, software stocks are down 9% for the week, the Nasdaq-100® is down 2% (blue line), and 10-year Treasury yields are down ~5bp to 4.2% (black line). UBS Group AG is among the bankers that has been fielding calls from holders, they said. It’s a remarkable turn for Michaels, which was hit hard by President Donald Trump’s so-called Liberation Day tariff announcement. Around that time it was considering revamping its balance sheet, including potentially through a liability management exercise. But those efforts are no longer needed amid the rebound in its debt. Mid Penn Bancorp ( MPB ) said on Friday it has received all required regulatory approvals to complete its previously announced acquisition of 1st Colonial Bancorp in a cash-and-stock transaction valued at about $101 million. The companies said the transaction remains subject to approval by 1st Colonial shareholders and other customary closing conditions, with closing expected in the first quarter of 2026. Following completion, 1st Colonial will be merged into Mid Penn Bank. Sun Country Airlines on Thursday reported record cargo revenue of $48 million for the fourth quarter primarily driven by the addition of eight freighter aircraft last year under its transportation service agreement with Amazon. Cargo has become an increasingly important prong in the Minneapolis-based carrier’s diversified business model — it is best known for passenger service to leisure destinations and also operates charter flights. It agreed last month to be sold to Allegiant (NASDAQ: ALGT), another passenger airline that mostly serves secondary markets. Allegiant has said it welcomes the Amazon business. Cargo revenue increased 68% year over year behind 50.6% growth in flight hours. Sun Country (NASDAQ: SCNY) has operated a dozen Boeing 737-800 converted freighters in Amazon’s network for six years. Last year, Amazon transferred eight more aircraft from another vendor to Sun Country. Full-year cargo revenue jumped 44.6% to $155 million. The carrier reiterated that it plans to add two freighters, supplied by Amazon, bringing the fleet to 22 cargo aircraft. The new planes are expected to be operational in July. One of the new freighters will be utilized as a spare to ensure schedule reliability for Amazon, according to the earnings report. A new operations base at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, where Amazon’s North America super hub is located, is scheduled to open this month. Management said it will help improve efficiency for the Amazon operation. Sun Country currently shares facilities with other carriers. Overall, Sun Country generated $281 million in revenue, up 7.9% year over year and its fourteenth consecutive profitable quarter, although net income dropped nearly 40% to $8.1 million. As Bloomberg reports, Apple is working to add support for CarPlay voice control apps from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and others. Previously, users who wanted to access third-party chatbots in the car would need to go through their iPhone, but soon they may be able to talk with ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini directly in CarPlay. However, Apple reportedly “won’t let users replace the Siri button on CarPlay or the wake word that summons the service.” So, users will need to manually open their preferred chatbot’s app. Developers will be able to set their apps to automatically start voice mode whenever they’re opened, though, which could help streamline the experience. According to Bloomberg, the addition of third-party chatbots in CarPlay could roll out “within the coming months,” but hasn’t been officially announced yet. The rumored update follows Apple’s announcement last month that Google Gemini will power an updated version of Siri, which is slated to arrive sometime this year.

Where’s the Trump phone? We’re going to keep talking about it every week. We’ve reached out, as usual, to ask about the Trump phone’s whereabouts. This time, surprisingly, we received a response — and an interview. The Trump phone is real — maybe, sort of, soon? — and I’ve seen it. Not in the flesh, but during an hourlong video call with two Trump Mobile executives who showed me a phone, and told me more about why it was delayed, when it might actually reach buyers, and why its spec sheet has changed again and again. I spoke to Don Hendrickson — yes, the one who had seemingly ghosted me last time — and Eric Thomas, two of the three executives that run Trump Mobile. The T1 Phone that Thomas shows me over Google Meet isn’t a final production model, but apparently it’s close. The T 1 logo — seen since the first renders of the phone — will apparently be dropped before launch, though the American flag at the bottom will remain, as will the signature gold finish. It’s clear from a glance that this isn’t the same phone the company teased eight months ago. The iPhone-esque camera triangle has been replaced by three lenses laid out vertically in a black, oval island with “Trump Mobile” written alongside. Look closer and you’ll see those lenses are unevenly spaced. The original T1 Phone mockup loosely resembles the current design, but a lot has clearly changed. Leading stock markets on Wall Street came under pressure earlier this week as technology stocks fell amid scrutiny of extraordinary levels of investment into artificial intelligence. Cryptocurrencies including bitcoin have also suffered sharp falls in recent days, although they recovered some lost ground on Friday. But US equities have been rallying for months as investors largely shrugged off geopolitical tensions and grew increasingly optimistic about the economy.
