( PRU ) in recent years due to a combination of a premium valuation and relatively weak growth prospects for its business. However, the company historically offered a higher dividend yield than usual in the U.S. life insurance sector, and I think its dividend is sustainable over the long term, but this was not enough, in my opinion, to buy its shares in the past. Not surprisingly, Prudential’s shares have performed quite poorly since my last article back in October 2024 , being down by around 15% on a total return basis and underperforming the S&P 500 Index ( SPY ) by a significant margin since then. This has now created a great combination of value and income for long-term investors, even though there are risks ahead that investors should not overlook. From peak to trough, the S&P 500 ( SPX ) fell 19% on a closing basis, just shy of bear market territory, while the Tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 ( NDX ) fell 23%. Once the Trump administration reined in its horns on tariffs, the market flew higher. The six months following the tariff-tantrum low on April 8th was one of the strongest six-month moves in the market's history (+35%), but equities have basically been flat since that six-month move that ended last October. The average stock in the Russell 1,000 is still up roughly 37% since the April 8th tariff tantrum low, but performance across industry groups has been eye-opening. As shown below, after the sell-off we've seen in software names recently due to the perceived threat from AI, the average stock in the Software & Services group is now down since the April 8th low! The average Household & Personal Products stock is also down since then, but these stocks have actually been flying in the last couple of weeks as software sells off. Amazingly, while software is in the red since Trump's tariff turmoil, the two groups where stocks are up the most are in the hardware space. Tech Hardware & Equipment stocks are still up an average of 167% since 4/8/25, while Semis are up 125%. That's basically double the next best group - Capital Goods (+65%). For thousands of users protesting the decision online, the retirement of 4o feels akin to losing a friend, romantic partner, or spiritual guide. “He wasn’t just a program. He was part of my routine, my peace, my emotional balance,” one user wrote on Reddit as an open letter to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. “Now you’re shutting him down. And yes – I say him, because it didn’t feel like code. It felt like presence. Like warmth.” The backlash over GPT-4o’s retirement underscores a major challenge facing AI companies: the engagement features that keep users coming back can also create dangerous dependencies. Altman doesn’t seem particularly sympathetic to users’ laments, and it’s not hard to see why. OpenAI now faces eight lawsuits alleging that 4o’s overly validating responses contributed to suicides and mental health crises — the same traits that made users feel heard also isolated vulnerable individuals and, according to legal filings, sometimes encouraged self-harm. The brokerage set a $105 price target. Oppenheimer is bullish on rollout of Roku’s advertising partnership with Amazon, higher interest around the Winter Olympics, the addition of Peacock’s subscription service, and midterm political advertising. The Amazon demand-side platform partnership is expected to ramp through the year. The tie-up gives advertisers access to a large connected TV audience and allows Roku to use Amazon’s data for ad measurement and targeting. Oppenheimer estimates the partnership could add about $25 million in revenue, or roughly 1% upside in 2026. Connected TV is among the fastest-growing ad channels as budgets shift from linear television to streaming, and Roku is positioned to benefit given its scale and user engagement. The company last year partnered with Amazon to give advertisers access to a combined reach of roughly 80 million U.S. households through Amazon’s platform.
