Under the deal announced Sunday, Insilico ( ISLMF ) will receive an initial payment with the potential for additional milestone payouts and royalties tied to future medicines. In return, Lilly gains exclusive global rights to develop and sell any resulting treatments. The partnership builds on collaboration between the companies that began in 2023. Insilico ( ISLMF ) is known for using AI across the full drug discovery process, from identifying targets to designing compounds. Lilly ( LLY ) plans to use Insilico’s technology to support multiple research programs, though specific disease areas have not been disclosed. The agreement reflects Lilly’s ( LLY ) broader push to accelerate drug development using AI. Flush with revenue from its obesity treatments, the company is investing heavily in new tools and infrastructure, including advanced computing systems and a planned research hub in San Francisco. Groceries, health care, child care, cars, gas — you name it, and affordability is attached to it these days. And then there's housing , one of the stickiest issues in America's affordability discussions. On March 12, the U.S. Senate passed a massive housing bill addressing affordability and supply, mostly of single-family homes. The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, chock-full of more than 40 provisions, garnered rare — by today's rancorous political standards — bipartisan support, tallying a 89-10 vote. The bill features a slew of financing, permitting, zoning and environmental reforms aimed at lowering housing costs and speeding up new home construction. The House passed an equally bipartisan, if pared-down version in February. The Senate bill, which adopted many of House provisions, now moves back to the lower chamber for consideration, where it's facing an uphill battle, primarily over the contentious issue of whether large institutional investors should continue buying and renting homes, a practice decried by both progressive stalwart Sen. Elizabeth Warren , D-Mass. — a co-sponsor of the ROAD Act — and President Donald Trump , who issued an executive order in January calling for an end to the practice . Ironically, that so-called "build-to-rent" portion of the housing market is relatively small compared to another one — factory-built manufactured homes — which received a huge boost from the ROAD Act and is far more consequential toward the overarching goal of building more homes. Khosla said taxing investment gains at rates similar to wages would better capture the wealth generated by AI, which he believes is increasingly benefiting capital over labor. He estimates the shift could exempt roughly 125 million people from income tax. Mike Blake | Reuters BEIJING — U.S. pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly has reached a $2.75 billion deal to bring drugs developed using artificial intelligence by Hong Kong-based Insilico Medicine to the global market. The agreement will give Insilico $115 million up front, with the remainder subject to regulatory and commercial milestones, along with royalties on future sales, according to the companies' announcement Monday. Insilico has developed at least 28 drugs using generative AI tools, with nearly half already at a clinical stage, Alex Zhavoronkov, founder and CEO of Insilico, told CNBC. The company went public in Hong Kong in December. Its shares are up more than 50% year-to-date. "In many ways, Lilly is better than us in some areas of AI," Zhavoronkov said, noting the U.S. pharma giant has "one person" who has brought biology, chemistry and automation under one roof. He added that as part of the deal, Insilico will join Lilly's Gateway Labs community for biotech development. The two companies have worked together since signing an AI-based software licensing agreement in 2023 . "This collaboration allows us to explore novel mechanisms and accelerate the identification of promising therapeutic c andidates across multiple disease areas," Andrew Adams, group vice president of Molecule Discovery at Lilly, said in a statement. It has more than doubled since I wrote about the merger with Veren . The total return from that earlier article was a little more than 100%. But really, Whitecap is just getting started. The Veren acquisition added a whole lot of low-cost possibilities to a portfolio that had a steady cash flow and a low decline rate. Canada, where both of these companies are located ( and they report using Canadian dollars), has a lot of unconventional and conventional opportunities. That means initial decline rates can vary quite a bit to influence the overall corporate rate. The dividend yield has now backed down out of high-yield territory thanks to the stock price rally. Investors can take that as Mr. Market being quite a bit more satisfied with the safety of the dividend for the time being. But the yield is still roughly 4.75%. That is more than half of what most investors report for a total long-term return. The stock price itself only needs to average a little more than a 3% return each year for an investor to make an average return on this investment-grade idea. Given the history here of successful accretive acquisitions, the common stock is likely to do far better than that. Unconventional Returns The big thing to note here is the assumption of returns using a $60 WTI and a C$3 AECO (which is Canadian), as well as the conversion ratio. Breakeven is very much dependent upon all the commodities produced by a well. AECO is particularly volatile and has gone seasonally negative in the past. This has put some producers in the position of paying customers to take the natural gas so that the profits can be made on the oil production.
