While there was no major news during the month, growing fear about the impact of artificial intelligence on the enterprise software industry was the likely culprit behind the crash. An AI agent can adapt, making AI potentially more robust. Where AI fails, though, is consistency. AI isn't deterministic, meaning that the same inputs can yield different outputs. While an RPA workflow will do the same thing every time, an AI workflow will inevitably be flakier. For mission-critical enterprise workflows, that's not good enough. Betting against the shares of Portuguese construction firm Mota-Engil SGPS SA is becoming an increasingly crowded trade, even as the stock has climbed since activist short seller Muddy Waters first disclosed its position. The number of Mota-Engil shares out on loan, an indication of short interest, has climbed to 26% of those freely available for trading, according to data compiled by S&P Global Market Intelligence. That’s up from 2.2% in mid-November and the highest level on record, surpassing a previous peak in 2019. At least five investors including Muddy Waters — founded in 2010 by Carson Block — have disclosed short positions in Mota-Engil. Some of those positions may reflect hedging or arbitrage strategies rather than outright bets against the stock. Companies in the UK’s dominate services sector cut jobs last month, as they turned to “automation” rather than hiring new staff, a closely watched survey showed. The monthly purchasing managers’ index showed employment numbers fell more sharply in January compared with December, continuing a trend that started in October 2024. The PMI survey, which is considered to be one of the most reliable indicators of how a sector is performing, said this was the “longest period of job shedding” in the UK services sector in 16 years, with firms also choosing not to replace voluntary leavers. The survey compiled by S&P Global said anecdotal evidence suggested some companies were turning to automation to make up for the staffing shortfall and increase productivity, alongside squeezed margins and fragile market conditions also affecting hiring decisions. Over the past thirteen quarters, they posted double-beats in at least eleven of them. The stock traded at a premium to peers like the recently IPO’d Phoenix Education Partners ( PXED ) and Strategic Education ( STRA ), both names I’ve liked. With OBBB starting to ripple across the sector this year, I also pointed out that GCE could actually come out ahead through Workforce Pell Grants and the new institutional accountability rules. That ties directly into its ABSN program (which, in my view, is the thesis' darling) and its focus on highly employable technical courses, especially in Arizona. So what exactly put the market in such a sour mood late last year? Seeking Alpha After Q3 FY 2025 came out , the stock dropped from around $218 to $150, before clawing its way back to roughly $175. That’s a 30%+ haircut in a little over a month! To be fair, the stock did get ahead of itself. My valuation stood at $208 per share, as discussed in the previous article , which meant buying at the peak wasn't really supported. Inflation is falling, rates are declining, and more data centers are being built. As rates decline, the risk-free rate of return will continue looking less attractive, and investors will seek yield from the capital markets. Enbridge ( ENB ) is still one of my favorite income-focused investments because the distributable cash flow (DCF) is protected by an intricate network of energy infrastructure that is as close to irreplaceable as possible. ENB’s contracted and regulated cash flow is a strong backstop for the dividend, which has 3 decades of growth under its belt. ENB checks off all the boxes for me, especially since they are continuing to allocate more capital toward growth projects to support the growing demand for energy in North America. I believe that the market backdrop is getting more bullish for energy infrastructure companies as we are living in a power-hungry phase driven by AI and data centers. I’m bullish heading into earnings later this month as ENB recently reaffirmed their 2026 financial guidance which includes generating between $20.2 and $20.8 billion of Adjusted EBITDA and between $5.70 and $6.10 per share of DCF. ENB also announced a 3% increase to the dividend for 2026 which will mark their 31st consecutive increase. ENB has the right business model for this period in time with a long history of generating income for shareholders. I am excited for 2026 as I believe ENB will continue generating large amounts of income while continuing to appreciate in value. JHVEPhoto Stanley Black & Decker ( SWK ) shares fell 3.4% in premarket trading Wednesday after the toolmaker reported quarterly results that beat earnings expectations but missed Wall Street forecasts for revenue. Adjusted earnings were $1.41 a share for the fourth quarter, ahead of analysts’ estimates of $1.28 a share. Revenue declined 1% from a year earlier to $3.7 billion, missing the consensus estimate of $3.78 billion. Net income fell to $1.04 a share from $1.47 a share a year earlier. Pricing and cost cuts lift margins Stanley ( SWK ) said higher pricing, tariff mitigation and supply chain cost reductions helped drive significant margin expansion during the quarter, despite weaker volumes tied to retail softness in North America. “Stanley Black & Decker delivered solid results across our key focus areas in 2025, with continued gross margin and net income growth and strong free cash flow,” Chief Executive Chris Nelson said in the earnings release. Gross margin rose 240 basis points from a year earlier to 33.2%, while adjusted gross margin increased to 33.3%. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization margin expanded to 11.8%, and adjusted ebitda margin improved to 13.5%. Segment results mixed In its tools and outdoor segment, Stanley ( SWK ) reported sales of $3.16 billion, down 2% from a year earlier, as lower volumes more than offset pricing gains. Segment margin climbed to 13.2%, reflecting pricing actions and cost reductions. The engineered fastening segment posted a 6% increase in sales to $524 million, supported by strong demand in aerospace and automotive markets. Segment margin improved to 12.1%. Tesla sales of China-made electric vehicles in January increased more than 9% compared to a year ago, representing a decent start to the year even as CEO Elon Musk seems to be shifting focus away from EV manufacturing to focus more on autonomous vehicles and humanoid robots. China-made Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicle sales in January totaled 69,129, including both domestic sales and exports, according to data released Wednesday by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). In the U.S. equity market, earnings-driven outperformance has been overwhelmingly concentrated in the Mag Seven, pushing indices higher while quietly increasing portfolio concentration. While the strength has been impressive, it has also sharpened a familiar challenge: how to pursue alpha while meaningfully diversifying risk. One approach to diversification has been to look beyond the Mag Seven and toward the broader U.S. market, including the S&P 493. Yet true diversification may require a wider lens. International equities, long dismissed after a decade of relative underperformance, are re-emerging as a potential solution to rising concentration risk. A historically wide valuation gap between U.S. and non-U.S. markets, combined with signs of converging earnings growth, creates a compelling backdrop for re-evaluating global equity allocations as a source of strategic balance in portfolio construction.
