Its parent Alphabet remains the largest shareholder. Credit: Sundry Photography / Shutterstock.com Waymo has completed a $16bn financing round that values the autonomous driving company at $126bn on a post-money basis. The investment was led by Dragoneer Investment Group, DST Global and Sequoia Capital. Its parent Alphabet remains the largest shareholder, while Andreessen Horowitz and Mubadala Capital also participated. Other backers included Bessemer Venture Partners, Silver Lake, Tiger Global, T Rowe Price, BDT & MSD Partners, CapitalG, Fidelity Management & Research Company, GV, Kleiner Perkins, Perry Creek Capital and Temasek. The company said it intends to begin ride-hailing services in over 20 additional cities in 2026, including Tokyo and London, and cited its recent entry into Miami as part of a wider rollout. Waymo added that the fresh capital would be directed towards international expansion while preserving existing safety standards, including growing its fleet and hiring staff as it moves into new US and overseas markets. In its announcement, Waymo said: “This infusion of capital will ensure we are positioned to move forward with unprecedented velocity, while maintaining our industry-leading safety standards. Our focus is now on global scale, bringing the safety and magic of the Waymo Driver to even more cities this year across the US and internationally.” The company highlighted safety data from 127 million miles of fully autonomous driving, stating it had achieved “a 90% reduction in serious injury crashes” compared with human driving. Waymo reported strong growth in 2025, when it more than tripled annual volume to 15 million rides and exceeded 20 million lifetime journeys. It now provides more than 400,000 rides a week across six major US metropolitan areas. Sequoia partner Konstantine Buhler said: “As a technology leader in the trillion-dollar transportation market, Waymo has moved beyond research milestones to achieve operational excellence, triplin...

Unity Software (U) stock plummeted 22% on Friday after Alphabet's (GOOG) (GOOGL) Google unveiled Project Genie, an AI-powered tool that lets users create interactive virtual worlds. The selloff marked Unity's worst single-day performance since May 2022, when shares tanked 37%. Investors are concerned that Google's new offering could replace traditional game development tools such as Unity's Create platform, which powers roughly 70% of mobile games. But here's why the fear might be overblown. What Is Project Genie? Project Genie is Google's experimental prototype that creates dynamic virtual environments using AI. Users can generate customizable worlds through text prompts and images, complete with physics simulations and interactive elements. However, there are quite a few catches. The biggest by far is cost. The tool is currently available only to Google AI Ultra subscribers, who pay $250 monthly. That's already pricier than Unity Pro, which costs $210 per user per month. Unity also offers a free version for developers generating under $200,000 in revenue. Google itself admits Project Genie has limitations. For instance, the tech giant noted imperfect visual rendering and occasional control issues in its current form. Unity's CEO Pushes Back Unity CEO Matthew Bromberg didn't wait long to address the market panic. In a LinkedIn post, he argued that Project Genie isn't a threat but an opportunity. His reasoning centers on a fundamental limitation of AI world models. Bromberg explained that tools like Project Genie can generate impressive visuals through prompting. However, they currently lack the determinism and precision needed for production-grade games. "Their outputs remain probabilistic and nondeterministic, making them unsuitable on their own for games that require consistent, repeatable player experiences," Bromberg emphasized. Unity's platform, by contrast, offers developers the control they need to create games with reliable mechanics. Bromberg sees AI-gener...

The price cuts underscore the deepening crisis for traditional luxury automakers in China Mercedes-Benz Group AG has slashed suggested retail prices for select models in China by about 10%, bowing to pressure from retailers struggling with widespread losses and mounting inventory in the world’s most competitive auto market. The adjustment, effective Feb. 1, was confirmed by the auto dealers chamber of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce in a Monday statement. The trade body, which had previously sent three letters to the German automaker regarding excessive inventory and delayed rebates, described the move as a pragmatic step to free up liquidity for dealers, though it said the measures still fell short of fully addressing grievances over the company’s overall business policy.

The French club Lens have condemned the racist abuse aimed at new signing Allan Saint-Maximin after a previous racist incident involving the former Newcastle winger’s children ended his career in Mexico’s top flight. Saint-Maximin joined Lens on a six-month deal during the winter transfer window. He left Mexican side Club América, saying his children were the victims of racist abuse there. Lens said on Tuesday that Saint-Maximin was at the receiving end of a “flood of hateful and racist insults” on social media. “In response, the club has been forced to close the comment sections on certain posts and will continue to take all necessary measures to make its social media platforms safe and respectful spaces for expression,” Lens added. “As a civic-minded and committed club, Racing reaffirms its attachment to the values of respect and tolerance, and stands alongside Allan and his loved ones, offering its full support.” Quick Guide How do I sign up for sport breaking news alerts? Saint-Maximin said last week his family was targeted and that protecting his children was his priority. “The problem is not the colour of skin, it’s the colour of thoughts. I am being attacked, that’s not a problem. I have grown up, I have learned to fight against attacks. But there is one thing I will never tolerate, and that is attacks on my children,” Saint-Maximin wrote on his social media last week. The 28-year-old winger played just 16 league matches with Club América and was in the first of a two-year contract that was signed last August. Neither he nor Club América went onto specifics about the attack on...

Mexico’s government plans to invest 5.6 trillion pesos ($323 billion) into energy projects and other public works through 2030, part of a bid to boost an economy that has barely expanded in recent years. The plan will cover roughly 1,500 projects, Finance Minister Edgar Amador said Tuesday, as he unveiled the investment blueprint at President Claudia Sheinbaum ’s regular morning press conference. While most of the spending will come from the government, Mexico also aims to attract private capital to the effort. Amador noted that the plan sees 722 billion pesos in additional investments compared to what was included in this year’s budget. He added that the public-private investments will boost the oil and gas sector as well as transport infrastructure, including railways, roads and ports. The blueprint’s projects are part of Sheinbaum’s “Plan Mexico” that seeks to stimulate growth with local and foreign investment, despite headwinds from trade uncertainty generated by US tariffs. The government is also working on dozens of development hubs in different areas of the country with the promise of luring companies with tax incentives and less red tape. A bill will be sent to Congress in the coming days to define the specific investment vehicles that lays out the framework for both fully public and mixed structures. The leftist Sheinbaum, like her likeminded predecessor Andrés Manuel López Obrador , has largely favored state-centric economic development, especially in the politically sensitive energy sector. But stronger economic growth is needed to sustain generous social spending both have championed. An investment plan for Pemex oil projects is expected on Wednesday, followed next week by details to increase domestic natural gas, Sheinbaum said. For decades, Mexico has relied on gas imports from US suppliers to cover most of the country’s demand. To date, Sheinbaum’s energy policies, including a mixed contract scheme unveiled last year, have yet to attract significant i...

Shareholders of Adeia Inc (Symbol: ADEA) looking to boost their income beyond the stock's 1.1% annualized dividend yield can sell the March covered call at the $20 strike and collect the premium based on the 65 cents bid, which annualizes to an additional 28.9% rate of return against the current stock price (at Stock Options Channel we call this the), for a total of 30% annualized rate in the scenario where the stock is not called away. Any upside above $20 would be lost if the stock rises there and is called away, but ADEA shares would have to climb 9.3% from current levels for that to happen, meaning that in the scenario where the stock is called, the shareholder has earned a 12.9% return from this trading level, in addition to any dividends collected before the stock was called. In general, dividend amounts are not always predictable and tend to follow the ups and downs of profitability at each company. In the case of Adeia Inc, looking at the dividend history chart for ADEA below can help in judging whether the most recent dividend is likely to continue, and in turn whether it is a reasonable expectation to expect a 1.1% annualized dividend yield. Below is a chart showing ADEA's trailing twelve month trading history, with the $20 strike highlighted in red: The chart above, and the stock's historical volatility, can be a helpful guide in combination with fundamental analysis to judge whether selling the March covered call at the $20 strike gives good reward for the risk of having given away the upside beyond $20. Bloom Energy stock is going gangbusters, but all the good news is already priced in. Bloom Energy (BE +6.72%) stock jumped 8% through 11:30 a.m. ET Tuesday. If you own Bloom Energy stock, you can thank Wall Street analyst Roth Capital for that. Roth Capital loves Bloom Energy stock This morning, Roth Capital publicly raised its price target on Bloom stock to $133 per share -- a 29% price target hike -- according to TheFly.com. Bloom Energy is expected to report its Q4 earnings after close of trading on Thursday, Feb. 5. The actual earnings news probably won't be great; analysts on average forecast $0.30 per share, down from $0.43 a year ago -- and these will probably be only "adjusted" earnings besides, not earnings as calculated according to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). According to Roth, though, that's beside the point, "given the likelihood of order announcements" and strong guidance from Bloom. We don't know precisely what Bloom will give for guidance, but Roth expects the news to be good. Expand NYSE : BE Bloom Energy Today's Change ( 6.72 %) $ 10.49 Current Price $ 166.62 Key Data Points Market Cap $37B Day's Range $ 163.59 - $ 176.44 52wk Range $ 15.15 - $ 176.44 Volume 326K Avg Vol 13M Gross Margin 33.24 % Is Bloom stock a buy? Now don't get too excited. Bloom stock is already up 575% over the past year, and even Roth has to admit that's a bit... optimistic. "Forward expectations are already factoring in very large order flow and incremental capacity growth in future years," warns the analyst, so Bloom probably won't get much of a bump after earnings. For this reason, Roth isn't recommending Bloom stock as a buy, and rates it only "neutral." That's still better than what I would recommend, however. With Bloom stock trading near 2,000 times trailing earnings, and more than 180 times next year's earnings even if it hits its targets, I still think Bloom stock is a sell.

An internal investigation into the ex-hedge fund tycoon Crispin Odey discovered at least 46 allegations of “inappropriate conduct” against female employees at his firm over a 17 year period, the UK’s financial watchdog said. The Financial Conduct Authority disclosed the findings of a investigation by Odey Asset Management as part of its legal showdown with Odey, who is currently challenging a lifetime ban from financial services. The hedge fund boss argues that the FCA was pursuing an “agenda” to root out non-financial misconduct and sought a “totemic” case. A London trial is set to start in March. In a legal filing disclosed on Tuesday, the FCA said that the accusations against Odey ranged in seriousness from an allegation of sexual assault in 2005 to an incident when Odey required a receptionist to try on a recently purchased skirt and show it to him “ostensibly to see if it would fit his daughter.” Odey said at the time that he was embarrassed by the allegations and admitted that “there were certain things he had done wrong,” the FCA said. Odey’s lawyers said in a court filing Monday that the FCA took no further action into the misconduct allegations. A lawyer for Odey didn’t immediately respond to a further message seeking comment. In March last year, Odey was hit with a £1.8 million ($2.5 million) fine and ban for showing a “reckless disregard” for governance at his former investment fund. Odey’s conduct demonstrated that he was not a “ fit and proper person ” to work in the financial services industry after he moved to frustrate a disciplinary hearing into his own conduct, the FCA said. The trial next month is one of the most high-profile to go before the UK’s Upper Tribunal, and is set to shed new light on attempts by officials at OAM to deal with the allegations against the firm’s high-profile founder, once one of Britain’s most visible hedge fund managers and Brexit supporters. Odey’s lawyers said executives faced unfair pressure from the FCA to act against...
