Saturday’s protests drew millions of people across the US and around the world. The Guardian spoke with some of them to see why they were there and what’s next So you went to a No Kings protest. Now what? Saturday saw the greatest number of protests in US history, when more than 8 million people at 3,300 No Kings events took to the streets to oppose the policies of Donald Trump . In the past few months, the Trump administration has sent more than 3,000 federal immigration agents into Minnesota’s Twin Cities , causing fear and havoc that was only furthered when agents killed two residents. Trump has also launched strikes on Venezuela and waged a war in Iran that has so far cost the US about $30bn to $40bn. That is on top of the US continuing to fund Israel’s war in Gaza; the ongoing immigration raids in other US cities, towns and rural regions; and the threats to trans rights, voting rights and more. Sjo/iStock Unreleased via Getty Images Shell ( SHEL ) has warned Australia against introducing a windfall tax on gas exporters, saying the tax would risk deterring investment and undermining energy security at a time global supplies are disrupted by the Middle East war, Reuters reported Monday. Australia has become the world's second-largest LNG supplier behind the U.S. after Iranian strikes forced Qatar to halt production, with its export revenue set to surge because of reduced supply due to the war. With the Australian government said to be considering ways to capitalize on the higher prices, Cecile Wake, chair of Shell Australia ( SHEL ), which exports gas from the Queensland Curtis LNG project, warned against "short-term fixes" in response to the energy crisis. "At times like this, there is increased risk that strong and stable policy settings are sidelined by short‑term measures or populist rhetoric," Wake told the Australian Domestic Gas Outlook conference. The proposed policies would "erode project values and render many of Australia's future growth opportunities uneconomic and uncompetitive compared to global alternatives," Wake said. Home building and housing-related activity account for approximately one-sixth of U.S. GDP. A nd the housing sector is heading into the all-important spring selling season. Mortgage News Daily At the beginning of this year, it was hoped that a couple of additional cuts to the Fed Funds rate could get this sputtering U.S. economic engine back on track. In the early going of 2026, average 30-year mortgage rates fell briefly below the six percent threshold for the first time since 2022. This triggered a short-lived boost in refinancing activity. U.S. Consumer Sentiment (FRED) Unfortunately, the new conflict in the Middle East has triggered a big rise in mortgage rates, and the housing sector is deteriorating at a concerning rate on some fronts. In this article, I will highlight how the poor health of the housing market is going to become an even bigger drag on the U.S. economy as we get further into 2026. And housing is a key determinant of consumer sentiment, which is already in the tank on a historical basis. Lennar, Wolf Street In addition, home builders are increasingly hitting large headwinds, especially for home builders not targeting the luxury market like Toll Brothers ( TOL ) . Lennar's ( LEN ) average home sale price (with incentives like mortgage rate buydowns included) is now down to 2017's levels. KB Home ( KBH ) reported its latest quarterly results last Tuesday. Both top- and bottom-line numbers slightly missed tepid expectations. Revenues fell 23% on a year-over-year basis, and KB's average sale price dropped to just over $452,000 from a bit over $500,000 in the same period a year ago. Homebuilding operating income collapsed to $33 million from $127.3 million in the same quarter in 2025. March 2026 Company Presentation In today's article, I will go in...

Springtime For RINOs Authored by James Howard Kunstler, “This sort of derangment is a novel psychopathology in the human species. . . a synthesis of low-IQ feminized brain scramble & neurotic lunacy ." - JD Haltigan on X Went to the No Kings assemblies in my town and the next nearby town on Saturday. Mental illness as far as the eye could see. Old folks, too, as far as the eye could see, predominately of the female persuasion: the devouring grandmothers . The Democratic Party has marshalled mental illness as its premier campaign strategy, and lately it is winning bigly around the country as mental illness becomes the go-to cope option for the ragged remnants of Boomerdom. They believe things that are patently insane, for instance, the latest proposal by Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) that illegal immigrants deserve reparations on account of being “traumatized” by U.S. immigration enforcement actions. If it feels like the Democratic Party is at war with our country you are not hallucinating. It is every bit as much a jihad as the Death to America crowd in Iran has explicitly pushed since 1979. The president gets no help whatsoever from his own party, as you see in the disgraceful hijinks around the urgent issue of election reform. You know exactly how the election playbook was written: let x-million foreigners into the country illegally, give them (illegally) social security numbers, driver’s licenses, automatic voter registrations, addresses, mail-in ballots. . . and voila! They don’t even have to mail-in their own mail-in ballots. Lawfare ninja Marc Elias will arrange ballot pick-up service. And the cherry on top is that the census must count all the illegal aliens to add new congressional districts for extra seats in Congress. So, in the face of that, Republican Majority Leader John Thune could not muster enough votes to save the SAVE Act. Or so he said. Looks more like lack a’wanna. Eerie lack a’wanna. On their tours of cable news, the hapless Republican senators, w...

The clock is ticking on Nike's recovery. Without any signs of improvement, Jim Cramer said we may soon have to make a hard decision on the stock. "I want to wait until the fall before we cashier [Nike's stock] and take the loss, or I see some green shoots by then," Jim said Friday during the March Monthly Meeting . "If I see some green shoots, we could buy some more." Jim's commentary comes ahead of Nike's critical fiscal 2026 third-quarter earnings report Tuesday night. It is CEO Elliott Hill's latest chance to show a skeptical Wall Street that his "Win Now" turnaround initiative is working. Since taking over in October 2024, Hill has made changes to executive leadership, managed to largely clear a backlog of classics inventory, and introduced a fresh lineup of products. Some of its recent drops include the Nike Mind collection , which officially launched in January, and the NikeSKIMS activewear collaboration with Kim Kardashian's brand. New, exciting collections can help drive sales and reinvigorate the brand. But so far, nothing has been enough to sustain momentum in the stock — not even the Supreme Court striking down President Donald Trump's emergency tariffs last month, on its face a win for companies like Nike that have seen their profits squeezed by elevated import duties. Nike shares are down more than 18% year to date, with the vast majority of the declines coming since the Iran war broke out on Feb. 28 and muddied the outlook for the global economy. At roughly $51 per share on Monday, the stock is down roughly 35% from its 52-week closing high of $79.24 in July. Nike's performance in China will be under the microscope Tuesday night, just as it was when the company reported second-quarter results in mid-December. In the three months ended in November, Nike's Greater China segment saw a 17% year-over-year decline in sales, and executives guided for similar performance in the third quarter. That was one of the biggest reasons the stock plummeted 10.5% the fo...

The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite ( COMP:IND ) led the declines, falling 1.2%, while the S&P 500 ( SP500 ) slipped 0.7%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ( DJI ) was more resilient, edging down 0.2%. Now, here are three focus points for investors on Tuesday: Traders will be closely watching Tuesday’s release of the JOLTS report after the open, as investors seek fresh insight into labor market demand and overall economic resilience. The data will be closely analyzed for changes in job openings, hiring trends, and quits rates, all of which could influence expectations for wage pressures and help shape the Federal Reserve’s policy outlook. Market participants will also focus on the Chicago PMI release, looking for updated signals on regional manufacturing activity and broader business conditions. The data will be parsed for trends in demand, output, and input costs, which may offer clues on economic strength and inform expectations around the Federal Reserve’s next moves. Investors are expected to keep a close eye on crude oil ( CL1:COM ) as tensions between the U.S. and Iran continue to inject volatility into energy markets and broader investor sentiment. With prices settling above $104 per barrel on Monday, traders will be alert to further fluctuations driven by geopolitical headlines and any threats to supply flows, particularly through critical chokepoints such as the Strait of Hormuz.
