Michael Nagle | Bloomberg | Getty Images U.S. Treasury yields edged lower on Tuesday morning, as investors reassessed the outlook for Federal Reserve interest rates and continued to monitor developments in the Middle East. At 4:37 a.m. the yield on the 10-year Treasury was 2 basis points lower at 4.321%. Yields on 2-year and 30-year Treasurys fell by 1 basis point and 2 basis points, respectively. One basis point is equal to 0.01%, and yields and prices move in opposite directions. The U.S.-Iran war continues to hold the attention of investors across the globe. Elevated oil prices are fueling both inflation concerns and recessionary fears, thereby clouding the outlook for monetary policy trajectories. Money markets are now overwhelmingly pricing in zero rate cuts from the Federal Reserve for the rest of the year, according to the CME's FedWatch tool. Last week , futures traders briefly pushed the probability of a rate increase by the end of 2026 to 52%. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said Monday that he sees inflation expectations as grounded despite rising energy prices so the central bank doesn't need to respond with higher interest rates. The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday evening that Trump told aides he was willing to end U.S. military hostilities against Iran even if the Strait of Hormuz remained largely closed. The waterway, a critical shipping route, has essentially been closed for the duration of the conflict, causing a supply glut in the oil market that has sent prices skyrocketing. Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Al Jazeera in an interview published Monday that Washington's objectives in Iran would take "weeks, not months" to achieve. Investors will also be monitoring February JOLTs jobs data on Tuesday, with the print due out at 10 a.m....

BlackJack3D Stock futures inched up Tuesday premarket following reports that President Donald Trump is considering ending the Iran war without reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Here are some of Tuesday's biggest stock movers: Biggest stock gainers Virgin Galactic Holdings ( SPCE ) +9% - Shares surged despite mixed Q4 results, with revenue declining ~28% Y/Y. Adjusted EBITDA improved to $(49)M from $(63)M a year ago, driven by lower operating expenses, while the company guided for Q1 free cash flow of $(90)M to $(95)M with expectations for sequential improvement through the rest of 2026. McCormick ( MKC ) +4% – Shares gained after Unilever ( UL ) moved closer to a deal to merge its global foods division with McCormick via a reverse Morris Trust, featuring an upfront cash component of ~$15.7B and the majority of consideration in equity. The proposed structure would leave Unilever shareholders with a ~65% stake in the combined entity, expanding McCormick’s portfolio beyond spices into a broader packaged foods platform. There is no certainty the transaction will be finalized. Biggest stock losers PepGen ( PEPG ) - 45% – Shares plunged after the biotech released Phase 2 data for PGN-EDODM1 in myotonic dystrophy type 1 that showed limited efficacy signals at the 5 mg/kg dose. While the treatment demonstrated a favorable safety and tolerability profile, splicing improvement was modest versus placebo, and functional endpoints showed no meaningful gains, raising investor concerns. The company highlighted that higher-dose cohort results (10 mg/kg) are expected in the second half of 2026. Service Properties Trust ( SVC ) -15% – Shares dropped after the REIT announced a $500M underwritten public offering of common stock. The deal includes a 30-day option for underwriters to purchase an additional 15% of shares. Proceeds will primarily be used to redeem 2027 senior notes totaling up to $550M. Helix Partners and The RMR Group indicated interest in buying up to $100M and $50M of sha...

I’m not saying I paid for all of it. But I probably should have flossed more I was at the dentist’s, because that’s where I always am at the moment, lying there, mouth full of stuff, thinking: “This is just a phase and not the new normal.” The conversation is one-sided by necessity, which is the only saving grace of being there at all, that window into a world where I’m not constantly talking and get to find out what other people are interested in for a change. No, there’s one other saving grace: I still have teeth. And maybe it’s part of the training, or maybe he’s just a very cheerful guy, but the dentist is an enthusiast . He loves all the seasons and the way a composite filling can stave off recession around the upper canines. He loves tea, coffee, red wine and turmeric; he loves fizzy drinks of all kinds, as a relatable prelude to the news that I have to stop consuming them. It would be hard to be warned off those things by someone who didn’t understand how nice they were. He determinedly never talks about the events of the world, but he doesn’t like a lot of silence, either, and that’s how we landed on the topic of the time he bought a Ferrari. Continue reading...

The 19th composer John Field was the first to name his gentle and delicate piano pieces ‘nocturnes’. The word – and the genre of ‘sleep music’ – it presaged, is ubiquitous today One of the most familiar topics of our time is the trouble many of us have in winding down at the end of the day. Insomnia is rife: crossing the threshold between day and night has become a challenge for many of us. Music is often recommended as a way to help us relax, and there are countless sleep music playlists on streaming sites to lull us into unconsciousness and bear us towards morning on a current of soothing sounds. Max Richter’s Sleep, “an eight-hour lullaby” , a set of musical episodes that mirror what’s happening in our brains during the various phases of sleep, is, 11 years after its release, currently No 2 in the official classical artist albums chart . It’s been performed all over the world, with audience members provided with camp beds, blankets and pillows and gently serenaded through the night by live musicians playing Richter’s meditative score. Musing over photos of slumbering audiences, I started to wonder about the history of music being used as an aid to sleep. The lullaby must be as old as humanity, but lullabies are essentially vocal. Their words often work against the grain of the music, sometimes conjuring up some very non-soothing images: “ When the bough breaks, the baby will fall / Down will come cradle, baby and all.” Lullabies are a strange hybrid, musically comforting yet often expressing a vein of underlying anguish . Sleep music, on the other hand, tends to be purely instrumental. The absence of a voice makes it more abstract; without words, the meaning of the music remains open and listeners are free to connect however their imagination suggests. Continue reading...

Open letter sent to members ahead of AGM ‘The club has been poorly led for too long’ A group of past Middlesex players led by Mike Gatting, the former England captain, has delivered a withering assessment of the county’s leadership on the eve of the new season and warned the club risks “drifting towards irrelevance”. In an open letter to members – a clarion call ahead of the club’s annual general meeting on 15 April – Gatting and his co-signatories have highlighted a lack of transparency and called the cricket set-up “a mess”. Desmond Haynes, the former West Indies opener, and England’s Mark Ramprakash are among others to have put their names to the letter. Continue reading...

Clustered together in the area of Cheetham Hill are more than 50 shops specialising in vapes and vaping paraphernalia. How can they all make a living – and for how much longer? I meet Ali outside his tiny wholesale business, Fly Vape – the store name combined with the image of a vape bookended by angel wings appears on the shopfront. In place of a halo is a cloud of vapour. The softly spoken 40-year-old says that working in the vape trade is “OK, better than nothing”. He opened Fly Vape just over two years ago, selling vaping products to small retailers such as convenience stores. Candy-coloured boxes bursting with fruity flavours line the shelves, although body sprays, soft drinks and a plentiful selection of bongs are available too. His customers come “from all around the UK”, he says, although he names only “Leeds, Bradford, Hull”. He shrugs at the fact that, compared with his neighbours, his sales are modest. He is not one of the “big men” here, he grins. Ali’s store is in Cheetham Hill, Manchester, where two adjoining litter-strewn back streets near Manchester prison (formerly Strangeways) have emerged as a surprising industry hub in recent years. Ali’s is one of more than 50 outlets specialising in vapes and their accompanying products in an area that has been dubbed Britain’s “vape capital”. Most appear to be wholesalers; there are few passersby and some doors bear signs stating “trade only”, “not open to the public”. Continue reading...

A tribunal verdict on the term is revealing about the complexities of having multiple cultural identities – and western attitudes to ageing It should be uncontroversial to state that what we want to be called – or do not want to be called – should be respected. This simple enough principle is what defined the grievance between NHS co-workers Ilda Esteves and her colleague Charles Oppong. Last week, an employment tribunal ruled in Esteves’ favour, agreeing she was subjected to harassment from Oppong for his repeated references to her as “auntie”. The healthcare assistant was awarded £1,425 in compensation. Continue reading...

The idea is that the copper will leach into the soil, liven up the plant and maybe even ward off fungi. It is one of those tips that refuses to die, passed on like family folklore. Airbnb Inc. is offering private car pickups in major markets outside the US, the latest move in an ambitious plan to offer hotel-like services in addition to lodgings. It is partnering with UK-based airport transfer company Welcome Pickups to offer the service to guests traveling to 125 cities across Asia, Europe and Latin America, including Paris, Bali and Mexico City, according to a statement Tuesday. After booking an Airbnb stay in an eligible city, users will see the option to schedule a private car service to their lodging in the app. Customers can also opt for a meet-and-greet at their arrival location. The option for guests to book airport pickups is the latest addition to Airbnb’s relatively new Services offering , which lets travelers book a la carte services such as personally cooked meals, massages, fitness training, and hair, makeup and nail appointments. Chief Executive Officer Brian Chesky has said services, combined with a companion Experiences business for booking activities, will help add $1 billion or more in revenue a year. But he has cautioned that it may take years before the new product lines become a material part of Airbnb’s business. While some Airbnb hosts have had their own arrangements with Welcome Pickups, which is registered as Welcome Travel Technologies Holdings , such as offering referral links or discounted rates for guests to arrange for the service themselves, Airbnb is formalizing the partnership by letting customers make or modify such bookings directly within the Airbnb app. Guests don’t pay an Airbnb fee when using the service, the company said. Welcome Pickups will manage customer support for the service. Ride prices will be fixed and determined by Welcome Pickups based on the vehicle type needed to accommodate passengers and bags, according to Welcome Pickups CEO and co-founder Alexandros Trimis. Users will receive their driver’s contact information ahead of time in case they need to get in touch for questions or requests, h...

watch now VIDEO 13:45 13:45 Saronic CEO Dino Mavrookas on $1.75 billion funding round, autonomous vessels, and expanding U.S. shipbuilding News Videos Autonomous ship startup Saronic said Tuesday that it's raised $1.75 billion as it ramps up production to meet mounting U.S. military demand for newer and cheaper defense capabilities. The round, led by Kleiner Perkins, more than doubles Saronic's valuation to $9.25 billion from the $4 billion it hit after a $600 million raise early last year. Saronic plans to use the funding to scale its supply chain and shipyards, and build more than 20 ships a year by 2027, including its new shipyard, dubbed Port Alpha, in Texas. "We're seeing is a real shift in demand towards unmanned systems that can be delivered at scale and at a fraction of the price point of traditional vessels," CEO Dino Mavrookas told CNBC's Morgan Brennan in an interview. The U.S. is racing to catch up to China's vast shipbuilding capabilities and restore maritime supremacy under President Donald Trump's military modernization plans. The war in Iran and bottleneck in the Strait of Hormuz is further illustrating the need to integrate newer tools into modern warfare. Saronic’s Spyglass and Cutlass autonomous surface vessels. Courtesy: Saronic Mavrookas said Saronic's vessels can help reduce risk to military forces in dangerous environments and help the U.S. chip away at China's dominance. The company wants to help the U.S. reach production levels not seen in the U.S. since World War II. "It's rethinking the entire ship" he said, which comes down to reconfiguring vessel design for autonomy. For years, Silicon Valley has poured billions into defense tech companies seeking to take business from legacy defense contractors such as Lockheed Martin , RTX and Northrop Grumman. Saronic, which ranked 19th on the latest CNBC Disruptor 50 list , is among a growing crop of defense companies winning over the government with the support of venture capital. Last year, it sign...

Michael Vi/iStock Editorial via Getty Images As 2026 wears on, the enterprise software sector continues to face tremendous headwinds that we haven't seen in years, with fears of the “SaaSpocalypse” wiping out years of gains and crunching valuation multiples down to bargain-basement valuations. My overarching view on this trend is that the fears of an AI-driven takeover of the software industry are largely overblown, but in companies where we can see a meaningful slowdown in current earnings data, we should be far more careful. PagerDuty, Inc. ( PD ), an incident response cybersecurity company, falls squarely into this bucket. The company has struggled with retaining customers over the past few quarters, which has triggered a substantial loss in market value over the past few months. Since January alone, PagerDuty has shed ~40% of its value, and unfortunately, there's no evidence of any light at the end of the tunnel. Data by YCharts I last wrote a “Neutral” opinion on PagerDuty in January, downgrading the stock when it was trading at $11 per share. Since then, PagerDuty's fundamentals have only worsened, with the company's revenue growth remaining sluggish amid intensifying customer churn. To me, there's no clearer indication that AI may actually be a net headwind for the company, no matter how much PagerDuty insists that it's an AI-first company. I'm dropping my rating on the stock one notch further, to “Sell.” As a reminder, PagerDuty's platform covers a wide variety of bases. The PagerDuty operations cloud consists of a number of core modules, which are shown in the chart below: PagerDuty operations cloud (PagerDuty Q4 earnings deck) Core functions include incident management, giving companies the ability to detect and respond to potential threats, automating the incident resolution process, and standardizing and streamlining core workflows. Here's the problem, however. PagerDuty is neither unique nor “best in class.” It may be trying to be too many things at onc...

Getty Images First Quarter 2026 Performance Recap Managing Risk Through Markets That Offer Fewer Safe Havens The first quarter of 2026 has been a rough one although most client portfolios have declined less than our benchmark by almost one percent. Generally, equity holdings declined less than the SP500 and the fixed income holdings are about flat for the year today, while the bond market has declined. The SP500 is down -4.7% year-to-date and the Bloomberg Bond Index is down -0.7%. The year opened with the U.S. involvement in Venezuela, which set the stage for a geopolitically dominated quarter. As a follow up to Venezuela, tensions rose in mid-January as the U.S. turned its focus to Greenland during an international summit. This was short lived but added to the turbulent environment for various asset classes. The main event of the quarter opened on February 28th, when the U.S. struck Iran. This is proving to be an ongoing issue and will be covered in our Investment Strategy and Outlook section. In addition to the geo-political developments, AI (Artificial Intelligence) sent a scare through markets as new products disrupted several businesses. Software companies bore the brunt of the pain, with companies like Monday.com, Asan, and HubSpot ( HUBS ), who have easily replaceable products, selling off by as much as 50%. Several other companies were punished unfairly in our view, including Microsoft ( MSFT ) (-20%), Intuit ( INTU ) (-30%) and DocuSign ( DOCU ) (-30%). The products and services of these companies are not easily replaced by AI. This fear spilled over into the trucking and finance industry as new AI products were released. The third big event of the first quarter was the appointment of Kevin Warsh as the Chairman of the Federal Reserve. Although not yet appointed, it appears Warsh will be Fed Chair this year. This announcement knocked Gold off its all-time high, which still has not recovered. Warsh is viewed as neutral by investors, who were prepared for an...
