"Is the U.S. market less attractive?" appeared to be the theme of the day here. "Oh my, U.S. futures are lower, while European are higher this am," the news anchor said. Also, there was a lot of emphasis on Microsoft ( MSFT ) "crashing" by 10% in the previous trading session. Moreover, there was a general "risk off" feel in U.S. equities and other markets, presumably because Kevin Warsh may be selected as Fed Chair by the President. Nasdaq 100 Futures NQ (thinkorswim) The Nasdaq 100 futures have been volatile lately, to say the least. We witnessed a run-up to near an ATH in recent sessions. However, this constructive move was followed by profit-taking and selling the news due to increased volatility because of transitory factors like earnings jitters and the uncertainty surrounding the announcement of the new Fed Chair. Still, I believe markets should calm down, and the recent selloff in high-quality tech stocks could be an excellent intermediate- and longer-term buying opportunity. The Nasdaq 100 dropped by about 4% from peak to trough recently, and even if there is more near-term volatility, I don't anticipate a significant move lower beyond the downward pressure we have already had. By the way, I bought the dip in Microsoft ( MSFT ) yesterday, with an entry around $423. This is the first time I've bought Microsoft in a while, but the stock's significant correction made it a solid buy, in my view. MSFT 1-Year Chart MSFT (Stock Charts ) Firstly, MSFT reached a critical resistance level around the major moving averages. There are definite pros and cons to taking a 401(k) withdrawal for this. Eurozone GDP growth is expected to have come in at 0.2%. Growth was driven by accelerated government spending – a key driver of Dutch economic growth in recent years – but also because of stronger growth in exports. Strong exports have persisted this year despite US tariffs and the stronger euro, thanks in part to exports within the eurozone and stronger exports to Asia. Consumers remained cautious as household spending growth remained steady at a moderate 0.3%. While purchasing power has recovered rapidly in the aftermath of the inflation shock, consumers remain particularly downbeat in the Netherlands amid high price levels and the concerning global environment. Bottlenecks curbing investment have persisted for some time now in the Dutch economy, and this also impacted growth negatively in 4Q. Investment growth was negative again in 4Q after a large decline in 3Q, and while the decline was more moderate, it is still rare to see investments shrink in times of relatively strong economic growth. This afternoon, the coalition agreement for a new government will be announced and is expected to contain measures that can improve the investment environment. German officials are preparing to push for the European Union to discontinue its gas storage targets when they expire in 2027, and instead implement an alternative strategic reserve system that would be managed by individual member states. The country’s economy ministry has held a series of meetings this month with business and regulatory representatives as concerns over low inventories mount, according to people familiar with the discussions. While the current stockpiling rules for gas won’t expire until 2027, Germany wants an EU decision on what happens after that by this summer, two of the people said. The targets — introduced during the 2022 energy crisis — are meant to ensure the region has enough gas to get through winter. Europe has, however, struggled to get its gas inventories to the required levels, and is likely to face similar challenges in 2026. Cold spells have drained reserves to unusually low levels, and an unprofitable gap between summer and winter gas prices has left little incentive for traders to store gas during the warmer months. Sarah Silbiger Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller said on Friday that he favored a 25-basis-point rate cut at the Federal Open Market Committee's meeting on Wednesday because he expects that the labor market is much weaker than the data is showing. He was one of two Fed governors to dissent from the decision to keep the federal funds rate target range at 3.50%-3.75%. Stephen Miran is the other who voted in favor of cutting the rate by 25 bps. Nonfarm payroll growth data indicate that 600K jobs were created in 2025, down from the previous 10-year average of ~1.9M, he said in a statement. Raymond James upgraded Sandisk on the back of a big earnings beat Thursday, in what the analyst is calling "one of the most delayed upgrades in history." The firm moved the stock to outperform from market perform, setting a $725 price target. That indicates a more than 34% gain from Thursday's close. Sandisk's quarterly-earnings report delivered $6.20 in adjusted earnings per share and $3.03 billion in revenue. Both were beats of estimated $3.62 in earnings per share and $2.69 billion in revenue, according to analysts polled by FactSet. Data center growth alone was up nearly 64% quarter-over-quarter, and the company gave better-than-expected guidance of $12 to $14 earnings per share for the next quarter. The company has clearly cemented itself as a leader in the race to build the world's best LLM. Gemini continues to perform exceptionally well. Shares are up more than 72% over the past six months, and they're also up more than 7% year-to-date. Over the last five years, shares are up ~270%, jumping from less than $100 per share to more than $300 a piece. While it's clear Alphabet is a leader in AI, I actually wanted to focus on what comes next after AI: Quantum. While not perfectly analogous, I think the next generation of Quantum computers will have an even greater impact on the future than AI has had over the last 3 years. Alphabet is clearly putting together one of the most complete quantum computing stacks in the industry. For the company, this isn't about making headlines or grabbing attention. For Alphabet, their Quantum computing strategy is not a single invention. With their massive search business behind them to subsidize their research, the company has a clear advantage, and it is built on years of success. The advantage is systemic. Even after Alphabet's huge rally in 2025, the company is still valued only as a very mature platform. However, the market is barely crediting its top of the leaderboard leadership in quantum infrastructure, meaning that there is a major mispricing.
