Activist hedge fund Third Point will not seek a proxy fight at CoStar Group ( CSGP ) and has sold its entire ownership stake in the real estate services provider, Reuters reported, citing sources familiar with the matter and a letter sent to investors. Led by billionaire investor Dan Loeb, Third Point exited its position after noting that its plans to make CoStar ( CSGP ) focus on its core operations would not rescue the company, whose shares have plunged more than 50% over the past 12 months. Shares of CoStar ( CSGP ) rose in January after Third Point confirmed its proxy fight, noting that the owner of Apartments.com and Homes.com should focus more on its core commercial business and wind down or divest its residential operations. "We no longer believe that our original thesis holds true today and have disposed of our position in its entirety," Loeb wrote in the letter to investors on Friday. "Despite our efforts, CEO Andy Florance has continued what can only be seen as a reckless drain on a majority of the company ’ s operating income into Homes.com and related acquisitions even as the share price has continued to plummet," Loeb added. They were, he said, “ambassadors for humanity” as they became the first humans to travel to the moon and return safely to Earth since 1972, on a mission that broke a distance record . That means I look for patterns in the data that could be meaningful, especially if they draw my attention to risks not widely acknowledged by the markets. That's because above even my focus on technicals/charts/data trends, I'm a risk manager. What happened? The S&P 500's 5-year rolling return ducked under its 15-year return. Big deal, so what? Well, it might be a very big deal. I'll show you why, using s ome highlighted pictures, in a moment. First, let's set the scene at what increasingly looks like a major market pivot point to me. Here are three things you should immediately understand about what this article intends to say: Over the next 2-3 months, I have no idea what the stock market will do. Sometimes I have a stronger feeling than at other times. But investing is not about feelings, it is about results. And in my career, the best results have come, not from being "right" but by not being "bigly wrong" in a way that creates drawdowns that take quarters or years to recover from. Because recovering from a steep drawdown costs me time. I don't like wasting time. The most important time frame to me is not the next few weeks or the next many years. Those are too short term and too long term. Too short, and you get fooled by the "madness of the crowd" and "animal spirits." Too long and you leave yourself wide open to your capital being underwater for a very long time. Not often, but it happens. I kn ow that memories can be very short in this business. So here's a 12-year (yes, I said "year") period in which the S&P 500 produced a return of 1.21%. So about 0.1% per year without compounding. This is what I mean. Markets are inherently cyclical. Data by YCharts 3. Market cycles can be defined. Not exactly, but in the way I trained myself to think, and encourage others to as well: namely, that return is always there...

It's always a good idea to look at what market data is telling you about the market consensus opinion on a matter, and right now, energy markets and the conflict in the Persian Gulf are front and center of investor concerns. Here's a look at what the oil futures market is saying about the conflict, and what it says about buying stocks like Chevron (NYSE: CVX) and other no-brainer stocks while the Strait of Hormuz isn't fully open for business. Futures contracts fix the delivery terms (including the price) for delivery of oil in the future. They usually trade in contango, whereby future prices are higher than the spot price to reflect storage and other costs. The opposite of contango is backwardation, where the spot price trades higher than futures prices, indicating a near-term supply scarcity or at least the fear of it. As you can see below, the market is firmly in backwardation, reflecting the absence of crude oil flowing through the Strait of Hormuz. That shouldn't come as a surprise to many investors; after all, almost 34% of the global crude oil trade flows through the strait, according to the International Energy Agency. Continue reading
