OkCupid and its owner Match Group reached a settlement with the Trump administration for not telling dating-app customers that nearly 3 million user photos were shared with a company making a facial recognition system. OkCupid also gave the facial recognition firm access to user location information and other details without customers' consent, the Federal Trade Commission said. OkCupid and Match do not have to pay a financial penalty in a deal made with the FTC over an incident from 2014. OkCupid and Match did not admit or deny the allegations but agreed to a permanent prohibition barring them from misrepresenting how they use and share personal data, the FTC said yesterday . The FTC has been run entirely by Republicans since President Trump fired both Democratic commissioners . The proposed settlement requires approval from a judge and was submitted in US District Court for the Northern District of Texas. Read full article Comments

Foreign central banks have slashed their holdings of Treasuries at the New York Federal Reserve by $82B since Feb. 25, bringing total holdings to $2.7T—the lowest level since 2012, according to Fed data, FT reported. “The foreign official sector is selling Treasuries,” said Meghan Swiber, a U.S. rates strategist at Bank of America, noting that the decline is particularly significant given that the Treasury market has roughly tripled in size since the Fed last recorded this level of selling. The selloff comes as the Iran war and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz have triggered a surge in energy prices and strengthened the dollar, upending the finances of countries that rely on oil imports. Central banks have intervened in foreign exchange markets to prop up their currencies, a move that typically involves selling U.S. dollars ( DXY ) and the Treasury securities they hold. Foreign central bank holdings of Treasuries at NY Fed decline (Fred, New York Federal Reserve ) Oil importers such as Turkey, India, and Thailand are likely among those selling as they pay higher dollar-denominated prices for oil, according to Brad Setser, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations who studies foreign holdings of Treasuries. Turkey’s central bank has sold $22B of foreign government securities from its foreign currency reserves since Feb. 27, the day before attacks on Iran were launched, with Setser noting a significant portion were likely Treasuries. “A number of countries…don’t want their currencies to weaken further because it pushes up the local currency price of oil—and either means more fiscal subsidies or more pain for households,” he explained. The selling is adding pressure to an already volatile Treasury market, with yields on both two-year ( US2Y ) and 10-year Treasuries ( US10Y ) rising this month by the most since 2024, increasing borrowing costs for the government, businesses, and households.
