Seagate Technology ( STX ) shares surged nearly 10% in premarket trading on Wednesday and topped the S&P 500 index. The move comes after the storage company reported stronger-than-expected results and issued guidance that was well above forecast. Looking to the fiscal third-quarter, Seagate said it expects to earn between $3.20 and $3.60 per share on an adjusted basis, with the midpoint of $3.40 well above the forecast of $2.99 per share. Sales are expected to be between $2.8B and $3B, above the forecast of $2.79B. For the period ending Jan. 2, Seagate said it earned an adjusted $3.11 per share as revenue surged 22% year-over-year to $2.83B. Analysts had expected the company to earn an adjusted $2.83 per share on $2.75B in revenue. Wedbush Securities analyst Matt Bryson reiterated his Outperform rating and upped his price target to $430 from $380 after the results. “With revenue and margin gains expected to continue for the foreseeable future, we see no reason to modify our constructive opinion,” Bryson wrote in a note to clients. Bryson added: “We see better near-term results, combined with STX's disclosure that the company has qualified HAMR at all US customers as minimizing any concerns around STX's execution on its newer/higher capacity platforms. In turn, we believe this result in our view bodes well for STX's continued ramp of [Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording] and increases the likelihood STX executes on its ramp of the Mozaic 4 platform (and we see the resulting boost in shipment capacity/mix as creating a potential jump in pricing/margins as volumes lift in C2H'2026).” Evercore ISI analyst Amit Daryanani also upped his price target on Seagate, as he lifted his target to $450 from $330. “We believe Seagate is well positioned to benefit from AI-driven secular tailwinds, with a highly favorable demand–supply backdrop, improving pricing power from mix shift toward higher-capacity nearline drives, and continued technological leadership in HAMR-based storage,” Da...

If you're in the space business long enough, you learn there are numerous ways a rocket can fail. I've written my share of stories about misbehaving rockets and the extensive investigations that usually — but not always — reveal what went wrong. But I never expected to write this story. Maybe this was a failure of my own imagination. I'm used to writing about engine malfunctions, staging issues, guidance glitches, or structural failures. Last April, Ars reported on the bizarre failure of Firefly Aerospace's commercial Alpha rocket. Japan's H3 rocket found a new way to fail last month, apparently eluding the imaginations of its own designers and engineers. Read full article Comments

Here's what Wall Street analysts surveyed by LSEG are expecting the company to report: Earnings per share: 59 cents expected Revenue: $9.67 billion expected Analysts are also anticipating that Starbucks had a successful holiday season. In November, about halfway through the quarter, CEO Brian Niccol said the company had its biggest-ever sales day in North America on the launch day for its holiday menu. Starbucks' same-store sales are projected to have risen 2.3% in the quarter, according to StreetAccount estimates. An increase would mark the second straight quarter that the coffee chain has reported same-store sales growth, indicating that Niccol's turnaround plan is taking hold in the U.S. Investors are expecting to hear more details about Niccol's strategy on Thursday at an investor day held in New York City. Executives will also share the company's new long-term financial targets. Starbucks suspended its outlook in October 2024, shortly after Niccol took the reins. Shares of Starbucks have fallen more than 3% over the last year, weighed down by investor concerns about its turnaround and a broader pullback in consumer spending. The stock has a market value of roughly $109 billion.

Health insurance is too important to be misguided on Medicare's ins and outs. Along with Social Security, Medicare is one of America's most important safety nets. It provides health insurance to millions of seniors each year who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford high-quality care. Given all the good things about Medicare, one thing many people agree on is that the program isn't the easiest to understand or navigate. There are tons of moving parts that make keeping up with changes necessary to ensure you understand your coverage. If you're currently on Medicare or will be soon, here are five myths worth debunking to help you understand the program better. Myth 1: There is one type of Medicare plan Medicare isn't one single health insurance policy; it's made up of four primary plans: Part A: Hospital insurance that covers things like inpatient stays, hospice, and other forms of healthcare. Part B: Medical insurance that covers doctor visits, preventative services, outpatient care, and various medical supplies. Part C: Medicare Advantage, which is a private alternative to Original Medicare (Part A and Part B). Medicare Advantage, which is a private alternative to Original Medicare (Part A and Part B). Part D: Prescription drug coverage that ideally lowers the costs of medications. Which plan is right for you largely comes down to your medical needs, preferred doctors and hospitals, and the level of flexibility you need. Myth 2: Medicare is free for people aged 65 and older Although you pay into the Medicare system throughout your career, that doesn't mean your coverage is free once you turn 65. Most people still pay a premium each month and a deductible. The deductibles for Part A and Part B are $1,736 and $283, respectively. This is a $60 and $26 increas...
