In Brief Anthropic has doubled the amount of VC funding it aims to raise, the FT reports, increasing the target from $10 billion to $20 billion. The round, expected to close soon, will give the company a valuation of $350 billion, sources told the FT. Anthropic, which makes the popular AI Claude and the equally popular Claude Code, decided to double its funding target due to booming investor interest. Backers in this round are expected to include Sequoia Capital (which also invests in its rival OpenAI), Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund, and investment management firm Coatue, per the FT. Late last year, it was reported that Anthropic hired lawyers as a step toward prepping for an IPO that could come sometime this year. The company announced a $13 billion raise in September, making it one of the industry’s most valuable private companies, valued at $183 billion.

Intel: DCAI Improves, Foundry Still A Question Mark (NASDAQ:INTC) Seeking Alpha

JHVEPhoto/iStock Editorial via Getty Images My last article on Intel Corporation ( INTC ) was an upgrade from my long-term Short rating on the stock. The reasons for that upgrade were mainly that CEO Lip-Bu Tan’s messaging being more realistic and execution-focused, which, I believe, was needed, and, even more so, the U.S. administration’s effort to reignite the company by taking a stake in it and encouraging big companies like Advanced Micro Devices ( AMD) and Nvidia Corporation ( NVDA ) to manufacture with Intel. Looking back, I think this was a pretty decent upgrade, since the stock has performed about 79% versus 7.6% for the S&P 500 ( SP500 ). As a fundamental analyst, it took me some time to understand moves like this, given my bias toward reports and company results. In some cases, speculative moves can change a company’s narrative, and the new narrative creates more price appreciation and so on. Data by YCharts Sometimes sentiment is enough to help a company turn around, for example by nudging customer adoption of Intel Foundry in this particular case, or by helping improve the cash position, which did happen. However, ultimately, real numbers still have to validate the narrative. Otherwise, the momentum fades, and that’s what this last earnings print seems to have done, at least for now. Intel Q4 Earnings Call On the consolidated numbers, Intel reported $13.7B of revenue (down 4% YoY, but with Altera deconsolidation and flat QoQ), 37.9% non-GAAP gross margin, better than the guidance of 36.5% mainly due to server ASPs, $0.15 non-GAAP EPS, and $2.2B of free cash flow. DCAI was solid, with revenue of $4.7B, up 9% YoY, and operating margin expanding significantly to 26.4% from 8.6%. This is indeed very welcome news and an indicator of server ASP improvements in a segment that has been disrupted by AMD for a long time. The Supreme Court is taking up a case on whether Paramount violated the 1988 Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA) by disclosing a user's viewing history to Facebook. The case, Michael Salazar v. Paramount Global , hinges on the law's definition of the word "consumer." Salazar filed a class action against Paramount in 2022, alleging that it "violated the VPPA by disclosing his personally identifiable information to Facebook without consent," Salazar's petition to the Supreme Court said. Salazar had signed up for an online newsletter through 247Sports.com, a site owned by Paramount, and had to provide his email address in the process. Salazar then used 247Sports.com to view videos while logged in to his Facebook account. "As a result, Paramount disclosed his personally identifiable information—including his Facebook ID and which videos he watched—to Facebook," the petition said. "The disclosures occurred automatically because of the Facebook Pixel Paramount installed on its website. The U.S. Space Force threw AeroVironment a curve ball last week -- but the stock was priced for perfection. AeroVironment (AVAV +2.28%) stock took a tumble on Jan. 16. After closing above $392 a share ahead of the holiday weekend, AeroVironment stock returned to market on Tuesday and promptly plunged 16%. Shares of the military drones manufacturer kept on sliding all week long, finally ending the week below $308 a share -- a total of 21.7% lost in just four trading days! (as of midday Monday, it was down almost 23%) So... what happened to AeroVironment stock last week? You may be surprised to learn it had nothing to do with drones. AeroVironment's no good, very bad, horrible, terrible Tuesday Going back to work after a long weekend is rarely fun, and AeroVironment management had a worse-than-usual surprise waiting when it returned to the office on Tuesday. As AeroVironment disclosed in an 8-K filing with the SEC, the U.S. government "issued a stop work order on the Company's Other Transaction Agreement for the delivery of BADGER phased array antenna systems to support the Satellite Communication Augmentation Resource ('SCAR') program." (RTTNews) - Following the upward move seen in the previous session, the major U.S. stock indexes moved in starkly opposite directions during trading on Tuesday. While the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 saw further upside, the narrower Dow showed a notable pullback. The Nasdaq jumped 215.74 points or 0.9 percent to a nearly three-month closing high of 23,817.10, and the S&P 500 climbed 28.37 points or 0.4 percent to a record closing high of 6,978.60. Meanwhile, the Dow ended the day off its worst levels of the session but still closed 408.99 points or 0.8 percent at 49,003.41. The strength in the broader markets came as traders remain optimistic ahead of the release of earnings news from big-name tech companies like Microsoft (MSFT), Apple (AAPL) and Meta Platforms (META). Shares of Microsoft surged by 2.2 percent and shares of Apple jumped by 1.1 percent, while shares of Meta edged slightly higher. Positive sentiment may also have been generated in reaction to upbeat earnings news from big-name companies like General Motors (GM) and UPS (UPS). Hello, I’m just back from covering the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Last week, I shared a few insights from on the ground in Davos. I’m going to try to share some more thoughts from my conversations below. But, first, the talk of the AI world over the past day has been the 20,000-word essay that Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei dropped Monday. The piece, titled The Adolescence of Technology and published on Amodei’s personal blog, contained a number of warnings Amodei has issued before. But, in the essay, Amodei used slightly starker language and mentioned shorter timelines for some of AI’s potential risks than he has in the past. What’s actually notable and new about Amodei’s essay is some of the solutions he proposes to these risks. I try to unpack these points here. One thing Amodei said in his essay is that 50% of entry level white collar jobs will be eliminated within one to five years due to AI. He said the same thing at Davos last week. But, talking to C-suite leaders there, I got the sense that few of them concur with Amodei’s prognostication. Amodei has been off about the rate at which technology diffuses into non-AI companies before. Last year, he projected that up to 90% of code would be AI-written by the end of 2025. It seems that this was, in fact, true for Anthropic itself. But it was not true for most companies. Even at other software companies, the amount of AI-written code has been between 25% and 40%. So Amodei may have a skewed sense for how quickly non-tech companies are actually able to adopt technology.
