US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told the elites gathered in Davos that the Trump administration believes globalization is “a failed policy” that left America behind. A day later, his boss, President Donald Trump , predicted the US stock market would double from records he openly took credit for. There’s a stark tension lurking between the lines spoken by the two American billionaires: Foreign investors have had an insatiable appetite for US stocks over recent years, playing a huge role in driving benchmark indexes to the records Trump likes to boast about. Europeans, in particular, have been voracious buyers. And while Trump lowered the temperature toward Europe, concern lingers on Wall Street that his belligerence and belittlement of the continent could take some of the biggest buyers of US equities out of the market. There are signs, in fact, that’s already beginning to happen. “We are seeing more clients wanting to diversify away from the US. We saw that trend start in April 2025 but it has somewhat accelerated this week,” said Vincent Mortier , chief investment officer at Amundi SA, which is Europe’s largest asset manager with €2.3 trillion ($2.7 trillion) in assets under management. He said any disentanglement will end up being a “long and complex process,” where clients need to figure out how they want to depart from main benchmarks, how they want to hedge against the US dollar. European investors own roughly $10.4 trillion in US stocks — and more than half of that total is owned by investors in the very eight countries Trump threatened with tariffs, a move that contributed to a 2.1% drop in the S&P 500 on Tuesday. To put those numbers in context, Europeans own 49% of all US stocks held by foreigners — a big enough chunk to pose a threat to the market, Scotiabank portfolio and quantitative strategist Hugo Ste-Marie wrote in note. “If we see diversification accelerating, it could weigh on US equities, bonds and the dollar over time,” he said. To be clear, ...

gawriloff/iStock via Getty Images Investing After Davos 2026 This week, the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting (Davos) was at the center of the stage, and all eyes and ears were on President Trump's speech, waiting to understand what he would say about Greenland. We all know that the situation, from ice to a thaw when NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced that he and the U.S. President had reached a framework for a deal . There have been many comments on the subject, Here, however, I would like to stick to what this year's Davos suggested to us as investors. After closely following the main events that were held in the highest town in Switzerland, I think a few facts should be clearly outlined, as I believe they will become part of our (economic) world. Macroeconomic Snapshot First of all, allow me to identify three things that simply looked strange as Davos started. Davos' title was "A Spirit of Dialogue," which immediately felt awkward, if not naive, as many Western political leaders talked about coordination, while preparing to face President Trump's willingness to control Greenland. European leaders seemed united (it usually isn't so) and even had to admit that Europe has to focus on its strategic autonomy, acknowledging that European countries will have to invest in it. Before Trump's speech, the market sold off, and a call to " Sell America " almost went viral through the news. Whatever we may think about the geopolitical tension, it simply feels off to sell America without any economically grounded reason. Let me spend a few words on the "Sell America" trade. Indeed, we saw a quick rotation out of U.S. assets, with the Danish pension fund selling $100M worth of Treasuries. Now, even though this is a minuscule portion of the national debt, the political message was clear about a trust in the U.S. at decade lows among some of its Western allies. Gold, in the meantime, hit new ATHs . But these days, this is almost no news. We already saw together that ind...

Just a few weeks after Greg Abel formally became the new CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, the company is apparently preparing to sell some or all of the Kraft Heinz shares it acquired in Warren Buffett's 2015 merger deal that has turned out to be a disappointment. An SEC filing after Tuesday's closing bell by Kraft Heinz says Berkshire, by far its largest shareholder with a 27.5% stake currently worth $7.5 billion, may sell "up to" almost all its shares. The filing doesn't necessarily mean Berkshire will sell, and it doesn't mean all the shares would be sold at the same time, but it's a strong indication some significant sales are coming. Berkshire's quarterly 13F portfolio snapshots will probably be how we'll know if the position is shrinking. The report covering Berkshire's current quarter will be released in mid-May. Bottles of Heinz ketchup and mustard for sale are seen at the Heinz company display at the Berkshire Hathaway shareholder's shopping day in Omaha, Nebraska May 1, 2015. Reuters In Wednesday's trading after the filing, KHC fell about 7% to $21.99, near a six-year low, before rebounding. It ended at $23.20 Friday, down 1.4% for the week. Zoom In Icon Arrows pointing outwards For years the company has suffered from underinvestment and strong competition from store-branded alternatives. In September, it announced a plan to reverse its declines by splitting into two companies, essentially undoing its 2015 merger. At the time, Buffett criticized the move , telling CNBC , "It certainly didn't turn out to be a brilliant idea to put them together, but I don't think taking it apart will fix it." watch now VIDEO 5:46 05:46 Warren Buffett says he is ‘disappointed’ in Kraft Heinz split Squawk on the Street Be...

How Soviet urban planning is helping Russia freeze Ukraine Ukraine is now living through its most difficult winter in recent memory. With January temperatures plummeting below -15C, Russia has been attacking energy infrastructure, leaving about a million Ukrainians without heating. The capital, Kyiv, is the main target of such attacks. Following the latest Russian bombardment overnight into 24 January, almost 6,000 apartment blocks were left without heating, according to mayor Vitaly Klitschko. This is the third such Russian attack targeting Kyiv's heating infrastructure in little more than two weeks, after strikes on 9 and 20 January also left hundreds of thousands freezing in their flats. "Living in Kyiv is a bit of a gamble these days," one resident of the Ukrainian capital, Rita, told the BBC. "If you have heating and gas, there is no electricity and water. If you have electricity and water, there is no heating. "Coming home is like playing a guessing game every day - will I be able to shower or have hot tea, or neither? And of course missiles and drones come on top of all that." She says she has to go to bed wearing a hat and several layers of clothing. What is making things much worse for Ukraine and easier for Russia is the widespread prevalence of apartment blocks that rely on communal central heating - where water is heated up elsewhere and then pumped into their radiators. Heating plants in Ukraine are huge and many thousands of people are affected when they are targeted by Russian forces. Ukraine says that all such power plants have now been hit. Such attacks also disrupt electricity supplies, but while a generator or battery pack might help in this situation, heating is less straightforward - especially when there is also no electricity to power your heater. Kyivteploenergo, the monopoly supplying heating and hot water in the Ukrainian capital, told the BBC "the absolute majority" of houses in Kyiv rely on its services. It said it could not share the exa...

The storm is expected to impact more than 170 million Americans through Monday, according to the National Weather Service . At least 14 states across the South, Midwest and Mid-Atlantic have issued emergency declarations. Catastrophic ice accumulations are expected across the Southern Plains, Lower Mississippi Valley, the Tennessee Valley, and the Southeast that could result in "long-duration power outages, extensive tree damage, and extremely dangerous or impassable conditions," the NWS has warned . Snowfalls greater than 12 inches are expected across the Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast that could cause widespread travel disruptions. The Department of Energy is ready to issue orders that would make backup power generation available to prevent blackouts, Secretary of Energy Chris Wright said in a Thursday letter to electric grid operators. Natural gas prices have soared about 70% this week as home heating demand is expected spike. Goldman Sachs has warned that the storm could significantly disrupt U.S. natural gas production. "We expect this is going to disrupt supply as well because it freezes the wells, it freezes we think more than 10% of US natural gas production," Samantha Dart, a Goldman Sachs analyst, told CNBC on Friday. "We use that for heating. We use that for power generation," Dart said. "So you're going to need the gas the most during the days when it's not going to be coming out of the ground." The goal, according to the company, is to enable more people to use the platform with fewer usage limits.
