PM Images/DigitalVision via Getty Images Back in April, 2025, I issued a contrarian piece on the Virtus InfraCap U.S. Preferred Stock ETF ( PFFA ), when the market sold off this ETF because of the tariff-driven fears. As the share price decline was quite meaningful, PFFA's yield entered 10%+ territory, which for me immediately raised an interest. Given the underlying strategy and risk exposures of PFFA, I was very confident about the current income stability going forward. So, I recommended that investors not panic, keep reinvesting the cash flows and/or even adding additional chunks of PFFA before the market could calm down and start to again recalibrate risks: In my humble opinion, it would be wrong to sell PFFA. Instead, I think that recent dip offers a solid opportunity to reinvest (or even slightly add) capital into higher yielding PFFA. I have to say that my thesis has worked out quite well: YCharts PFFA has recovered, delivered strong returns, and outperformed the U.S. preferred share (unlevered) market ( PFF ). On top of that, PFFA circulated positive news regarding its dividend. Earlier in January, the monthly dividend amount was increased from $0.1700 per share to $0.1725 per share, which is the opposite of what some might have expected amid the recently realized base rate cuts, which theoretically should cause yields to decline across the board. The ministry gave no further details about accusations against General Zhang Youxia, who has widely been seen as President Xi Jinping's closest military ally. However in China the accusation of wrongdoing is usually a euphemism for corruption. In its announcement, the ministry said another senior military officer, General Liu Zhenli, was also under investigation. Their removal follows the expulsion of nine top generals in October - one of the largest public crackdowns on the military in decades. Zhang, 75, is a vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC) - the Communist Party group headed by President Xi which controls the armed forces. Zhang also sits on the party's top decision-making body, the 24-person Politburo. His father was one of the founding generals of the Chinese Communist Party. Zhang joined the army in 1968 and is one of only a few senior leaders with combat experience. He was kept in office beyond the customary retirement age for China's military, suggesting President Xi's confidence in him until now. The announcement comes days after rumours appeared that Zhang and Liu could be facing an investigation as they were not present at a high-level party event in December. I have a very specific plan for that money, and it takes a lot of the pressure off. There are millions of older Americans today who collect a monthly benefit from Social Security. For many of those people, those benefits spell the difference between being able to pay for basic expenses or not. I have a very different plan for my Social Security benefits, though. It's a plan that allows me to worry less about the future of Social Security, which happens to be a bit precarious these days. How I hope to use my Social Security checks While there's nothing wrong with banking on Social Security to cover basic expenses in retirement, I hope to use my monthly benefits as extra money -- money I can spend on things like hobbies and entertainment. To pull this off, though, I recognize that I'll need a large nest egg. To that end, I've been saving very aggressively for retirement since my 20s. My hope is that my efforts will pay off in the form of a retirement account balance that covers my basic needs. To be fair, I also intend to live somewhat frugally in retirement. I plan to downsize to a smaller home and move to an area where property taxes are cheaper. Some of the services I pay for now may be things I don't have to outsource if I have more time to do them, like lawn care and house cleanings. So my hope is that between a strong savings effort and lower costs, I won't have to use my monthly Social Security checks for basic expenses.
