U.S. memory chip maker Micron Technology is set to announce a new manufacturing investment in Singapore as early as Tuesday, expanding its production footprint amid a severe global shortage of memory chips, according to three people briefed on the matter. The move underscores mounting pressure on the semiconductor industry as demand from artificial intelligence infrastructure and consumer electronics continues to outstrip supply. The planned investment is expected to focus on NAND flash memory, one of the people told Reuters. The sources declined to be identified because they were not authorized to speak publicly. Micron did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters. The expansion comes as chipmakers race to add capacity to address shortages affecting nearly all categories of memory, driven largely by the rapid buildout of data centers and AI services that rely heavily on advanced memory components. Industry analysts warn that despite aggressive investment plans, tight supply conditions could persist until at least late 2027. Singapore plays a central role in Micron’s global operations. The company already manufactures about 98% of its flash memory chips in the city-state and is in the process of building a $7 billion advanced packaging facility there to produce high-bandwidth memory used in artificial intelligence chips. That plant is expected to begin production in 2027, further cementing Singapore’s importance in the global semiconductor supply chain. Micron’s rivals are also moving quickly to expand output. South Korea’s Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have both announced new production lines and accelerated timelines to bring additional capacity online. Earlier this month, SK Hynix told Reuters it plans to speed up the opening of a new factory by three months and begin operating another plant in February, reflecting the urgency felt across the industry. In parallel, Micron is seeking to bolster its DRAM production. Last week, the company sa...

Getty Images Renewal The Value Fund posted a return of +0.4% for 2025. (1) Our results were significantly dampened by currency headwinds; specifically, the weakening U.S. dollar created a drag of approximately -4.3% on full-year returns. While we maintain a long-term policy of not hedging currency fluctuations to avoid high transaction costs, years like 2025 demonstrate the short-term volatility this can introduce to our results. We remain committed to this “long game” approach, as the cost savings of remaining unhedged historically outweigh these periodic fluctuations. We trailed the broader markets in a year defined by continued upward momentum. The S&P/TSX led the charge with a +31.7% return, driven largely by its materials subsector (gold). In the U.S., the S&P 500 +12.5% and DJIA +9.7% also advanced. (2) For the S&P 500, performance was once again driven by a handful of names rather than broad participation. The “Magnificent Seven” (Alphabet, Amazon ( AMZN ), Apple ( AAPL ), Meta ( META ), Microsoft ( MSFT ), Nvidia ( NVDA ) and Tesla (TSLA)) were responsible for 42% of the S&P 500’s gains. This distortion is evident when viewing the S&P 500 Equal Weight Index, which returned only 6.4%—a significant 6.1% lag behind its market-cap-weighted cousin. (3) The pervasiveness of price-insensitive passive indexing is likely exacerbating these effects. We admire the business models of most of the Magnificent Seven and their dominance in technological innovation, particularly AI. We would happily own most of them at the right price—indeed, Alphabet has been a portfolio holding for years. However, we remain grounded in the simple truth that even a wonderful business is not worth an infinite price. As this bull market matures, we hear increasingly exotic arguments designed to justify extreme valuations and irrational risk-taking. We listen politely to these latest variations of ‘this time is different,’ and simply allocate our capital elsewhere. We were in good company. Oth...

There are several ETFs that offer exposure to small-cap stocks. 10 stocks we like better than iShares Trust - iShares Russell 2000 ETF › The new year is still young, but one of the biggest stories in the stock market so far has been the breakout performance of the Russell 2000, the small-cap index. In fact, the Russell 2000 beat the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) in each of the first 14 trading days of the year, a streak that snapped on Jan. 23 when the Russell 2000 fell by nearly 2%. Still, the small-cap index has built a sizable edge over its large-cap peer over the first three weeks of the year as the chart below shows. Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now, when you join Stock Advisor. See the stocks » The S&P 500 has outperformed the Russell 2000 over each of the last five years, and dominated it through the AI boom of the last three years. However, after a strong start, the Russell 2000 looks poised to finally beat the S&P 500 this year. Here are two reasons why. The valuation gap has gotten too big After jumping more than 75% over the last three years, the S&P 500 is nearly as expensive as it's ever been. It's trading at a price-to-earnings ratio of 28, according to ETFs that track the S&P 500, and concerns about an AI bubble, high concentration among "Magnificent Seven" stocks, which now make up roughly a third of the index, and expectations for the bull market to broaden all favor alternatives like small-caps. The biggest Russell 2000 ETF, the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSEMKT: IWM), now trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of 19.5, a discount of roughly a third versus the S&P 500. In other words, the Russell 2000 would have to increase by about 50% to have the same valuation as the S&P 500. That should help encourage a rotation...

Broadcom (AVGO) forecast Right now, Broadcom is in the right place at the right time and is doing pretty much all the right things. Not only has it positioned itself solidly in the semiconductor space, but its infrastructure software is also a strong performer. This means that Broadcom kind of has its bases covered in the case one side or the other suffers a downturn, which is a very positive thing for stock investors. The built-in hedging can increase confidence in a company that can have somewhat volatile stock prices and income streams. This could spell stock price growth moving forward, provided Broadcom's potential continues to translate into delivery. 2026 Forecast Broadcom started 2026 with a bang, as far as Wall Street is concerned. Of its 50 analyst recommendations in January, 9 were Strong Buys and 39 were Buys, leaving only two non-believers. Analysts have placed price targets between $289 and $535, putting the stock's price target average at $456, well above its mid-January price of $320.

Micron Technology Inc. will inject an additional $24 billion in Singapore over the next decade to expand its manufacturing capabilities amid an AI-induced memory chip shortage. The Boise, Idaho-based chipmaker will use the funding to build a new facility for NAND, according to a company statement. NAND is a replacement for hard disk drive storage with faster access speeds that’s grown in demand with the AI infrastructure build-out. The new investment will create around 1,600 jobs, and wafer output is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2028, the company said Tuesday. The global memory market is dominated by Micron and its two South Korean rivals SK Hynix Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. The three have prioritized production of high-end chips needed to build AI infrastructure and shifted resources away from memory chips for other segments. Since last year, PC firms and smartphone makers have warned about memory chip shortages hurting their businesses. To mitigate what Micron says is an unprecedented supply crunch, the US company just broke ground on a $100 billion facility in New York state, and recently announced plans to pay $1.8 billion for a facility in Taiwan. In early 2025, Micron announced a $7 billion investment over the next several years to expand its manufacturing footprint in Singapore to meet demand for advanced memory chips required to train artificial intelligence. The US chipmaker has long relied on Taiwan, Singapore and Japan as its key production bases.
