Fernando Genzor/iStock via Getty Images After reviewing the performance track record, portfolio composition, as well as such aspects as liquidity and expenses, I believe the Counterpoint Quantitative Equity ETF ( CPAI ), an actively managed exchange-traded fund leveraging AI-driven models in its investment process, is an excellent candidate for an ETF investor's short list of vehicles worth considering. Nevertheless, while I am impressed by its returns, there are a few issues that persuaded me to stop short of a Buy rating for now, so I initiate coverage with a Hold rating. First, CPAI's risk-adjusted returns look quite soft owing to high volatility. In this regard, I believe it is not suitable for investors seeking not just to maximize returns but also to, ideally, keep volatility around market-like levels. Second, despite a quite healthy, almost linear growth trend, its AUM is still relatively small at just $173.14 million (as of January 27). The direct consequence here is that liquidity overall is far from perfect, with its 30-day median bid/ask spread of 0.2042% being an issue. Third, its turnover of 324% is clearly elevated. Fourth, the expense ratio of 75 bps is rather high. Of course, given the stock selection mastery, the high fee looks justified. Yet it nonetheless a factor that eats into the total returns. And finally, incepted in November 2023, the ETF was not tested by a bear market. I will address these aspects with all necessary attention below in the note. CPAI Strategy And Portfolio As described on its website , incepted on November 28, 2023, CPAI ...invests in individual stocks that have exposure to multiple factors and are among the highest-ranking stocks to hold as determined by quantitative models and artificial intelligence to seek outperformance relative to the market. As explained in the summary prospectus, machine learning is at the core of the process: The quantitative models use machine learning technology to rank stocks of companies of U.S...

Tomohiro Ohsumi | Bloomberg | Getty Images Shares of Japanese semiconductor equipment maker Advantest jumped over 7% after the company posted record quarterly sales in the October-December period , with operating profit surging 64% year on year to 113.6 billion yen ($741.8 million). The company also raised its operating profit forecast for the year ending March 2026 by 21.4% to 454 billion yen on Wednesday. Growth was driven primarily by its Test System Business, where sales surged 51.1% to ¥723.1 billion as demand surged for system-on-a-chip testers used in high-performance and AI semiconductors. Stock Chart Icon Stock chart icon Advantest also cited continued strength in memory testers for high-performance dynamic random-access memory. Its core business is semiconductor test systems, which verify that chips function properly and meet performance and durability standards before they are shipped. As chips used in artificial intelligence and high-performance computing become more complex, demand has grown for more advanced testing equipment to ensure quality and reliability. While Advantest's management said it does not currently expect tariffs to have a major impact, it flagged ongoing risks from geopolitical uncertainty and currency volatility, even as it sees strong tester demand to persist into the fourth quarter.
