Disney posted a strong first quarter, powered by box-office hits “Zootopia 2” and “Avatar: Fire and Ash.” The Walt Disney Co. earned $2.4 billion, or $1.34 per share, for the three months ended Dec. 27. It earned $2.64 billion, or $1.40 per share, a year ago. Removing one time charges and costs, earnings were $1.63 per share. That’s better than the $1.57 per share that analysts polled by Zacks Investment Research expected. Disney, based in Burbank, California, reported revenue of $25.98 billion. Wall Street was calling for slightly higher revenue of $25.99 billion. FAA To Allow 44 SpaceX Starship Launches From Kennedy Space Center Per Year Authored by T.J. AP Photo/Eric Gay That decision was released on Jan. 30 in an environmental impact report , which also recommended that the company conduct 88 landings : 44 for the Starship spacecraft and 44 for the Super Heavy booster. The FAA makes this recommendation while noting concerns from Brevard County residents about noise, especially sonic booms during late-night operations; beach access related to the launches; and the possibility that the National Park Service could lose revenue due to the increased need to close parts of the Canaveral National Seashore. Impacts on commercial flights, especially international ones, due to ground stops or re-routing were also acknowledged. The administration also noted that SpaceX still needs to obtain FAA launch license approval and complete mitigation work before those new launches can begin. Once that happens, these launches and landings would commence at Launch Complex 39-A, continuing that pad’s historic legacy of hosting the Saturn V moon rocket, the Space Shuttle, and the SpaceX Falcon 9. The Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt has been reopened by Israel for a limited number of people on foot, as fragile diplomatic efforts to stabilise the conflict inch forward. Israeli forces took control of the Rafah crossing – Gaza’s only crossing not shared with Israel – in May 2024, describing it as necessary to prevent weapons smuggling by Hamas. The move isolated the territory, cutting off a critical lifeline for Palestinians seeking access to medical care, travel and trade. Israel has made clear that all movement through the crossing will be subject to joint Israeli-Egyptian security screening and that, for now, only a small number of Gaza’s tens of thousands of wounded and ill Palestinians will be permitted to leave each day. According to an Egyptian official, speaking anonymously to the Associated Press, only 50 Palestinians will be permitted to cross in each direction on the first day of operations. Before the war, the Rafah crossing was Gaza’s sole window on to the outside world not controlled by Israel. Its reopening could ease access to medical care, allow limited travel abroad, and enable visits to family members in Egypt, where tens of thousands of Palestinians already live. Israeli airstrikes on hospitals have reduced the Palestinian healthcare system to ruins. Germany’s federal prosecutor ordered the arrest of five men for allegedly exporting goods worth at least €30 million ($36 million) to Russia in breach of European Union sanctions. A minimum of 24 Russian arms companies received the goods as part of about 16,000 shipments, the prosecutor’s office said Monday in an emailed statement. “The arrested suspects are strongly suspected of being members of a criminal organization and of having committed commercial and gang-related violations of the Foreign Trade and Payments Act,” according to the statement. German authorities have stepped up their fight against illegal trade and alleged Russian espionage activities after the Kremlin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022. Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil , who oversees the customs agents who made the arrests, said they showed that anyone who conducted covert business with Russian arms companies would face the consequences. “We are providing substantial support to Ukraine and will continue to do so,” Klingbeil said in an emailed statement. “At the same time, we are making it clear to Russia: Putin must pay a heavy price for his attack,” he added.
