Trump's Economic Shield Cracks As Gas Prices And Iran Standoff Threaten Midterm Fortunes As we continue to 'enjoy' expensive gas across the country thanks to a broken campaign promise not to start new wars, President Donald Trump enters the 2026 midterm campaign with an unfamiliar vulnerability: voters are feeling the pain. High gasoline prices , fueled by the prolonged U.S. military confrontation with Iran and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, have turned inflation into a daily political problem for the White House. Trump's approval ratings have fallen near the lowest point of either of his presidential terms , with especially sharp declines in approval over the economy - long one of his strongest political defenses . Public frustration over affordability, a concern that helped return him to the White House, has not eased . Source: RealClearPolitics The White House, meanwhile, is touting tax refunds delivered under last year's legislation, and the administration's promise of abundant domestic energy. But those messages have been overshadowed by the reality on Main St. " I think the president was being truthful when he said he really didn't care about the midterms ," said Mick Mulvaney, former acting White House chief of staff. "But House and Senate Republicans do care. And if gas is still north of $4 by Labor Day, everybody in town knows that means trouble for the incumbent party. Big trouble. " Even if the Iran war ended tomorrow, some economists think that the damage already done to oil infrastructure - and the risks of renewed fighting, will keep upward pressure on prices. "We think that the drag on the economy due to the war will weigh heavily on household consumption among middle-class, working-class and the working poor ahead of the November congressional election," said Joseph Brusuelas, chief economist at RSM US. Noah Sauve Wells Fargo ( WFC ) expects its markets business to grow in the mid-teens Y/Y in Q2, Chief Financial Officer Mike Santomassimo said Tuesday at an investor conference. He also reaffirmed the company's 2026 target for $50B of net interest income. For Q2, the company's NII may be a little better than it modeled as the forecast for rate cuts has changed. Wells Fargo ( WFC ) expects its net interest margin, or NIM, to compress by about three or four basis points in Q2, then expects that compression to moderate, he said. Q1 2026 NIM had dipped to 2.47% from 2.60% in Q4 2025. Its investment banking business has improved, its consumer banking and credit card business remains strong, and its wealth management business is growing, he said at the Morgan Stanley U.S. Financials Conference. "We're not overly reliant on any one thing" to reach the bank's return goals. The bank targets a 17%-18% return on tangible common equity. On the consumer credit card side, " We're not seeing a lot of change in behavior over the last few quarters… It's been very stable, very resilient," Santomassimo said. Consumer spending through credit cards remains resilient, Wells Fargo ( WFC ). "T hat's translating into really good credit performance across all the portfolios." Consumer card spending has risen 9% Y/Y in May. And even though consumers are probably spending 45%-50% more on gas than they were a few months ago, Wells Fargo ( WFC ) isn' t seeing real changes in other aggregate categories, he said. He still notes there's caution on the commercial banking side. Many businesses are "h esitant to make a really big investment," he said. But that translates to good credit quality. Regarding capital deployment, the bank's "priority is always going to be supporting clients and growing organically," Santomassimo said . "We have plenty of capital to do that," adding that the company will find the balance between investment for growth and returns to shareholders. As for the threat of customer...

Last Friday was a good reminder of why hedging exists. The QQQ ETF that tracks the Nasdaq-100 dropped 4.8% in a single session, volume hit three times its normal daily level and options positions that looked comfortable on Thursday morning were suddenly down 30-60%. That kind of day is not unusual, it just feels that way when you are not prepared for it. Today I want to walk through a hedging structure I have been running alongside my algorithm, Maya , for more than a year: the QQQ put spread. Before I get into the mechanics, I want to be clear about something upfront. A hedge does not cancel your losses. What it does is put a meaningful floor under your worst-case scenario while keeping your cost of protection manageable. Those are two very different things, and the distinction matters. What's a QQQ Put Spread Hedge A put spread pairs two positions: you buy a put at one strike and simultaneously sell a put at a lower strike with the same expiration. The put you buy gains value as QQQ falls. The put you sell at the lower strike caps your maximum profit but dramatically reduces what you pay to enter the position. Without that second leg, buying outright puts to hedge a portfolio gets expensive fast, particularly when volatility is already elevated and everyone else has the same idea. The specific setup I use targets roughly 40 days to expiration, with the long put sitting about 3% below QQQ's current price and the short put about 8% below. Right now, with QQQ trading near $705, that means buying the $685 put and selling the $650 put, a $35-wide spread targeting the July expiration cycle. There are three things I look at before opening the hedge: 1. VIX level This is the first filter and the most important one. I do not open new hedges when VIX is above 20. Once VIX is elevated, put premiums have already expanded and you are paying crisis prices for protection against a crisis that may have already started. The right time to buy protection is when the tape is calm and...

Crusoe , a developer of data centers for companies like OpenAI and Microsoft Corp. , said it has contracts for almost 5 gigawatts of capacity, even though it has paused work on a significant project in Wyoming. Crusoe was working with Blackstone Inc. -backed energy company Tallgrass to develop a 1.8-gigawatt campus in Cheyenne, Wyoming, for an undisclosed tenant. “At the request of our customer, Crusoe has paused its development activities” on the site, the company said Tuesday in a statement. The 4.9 gigawatts of contracted capacity includes the flagship site of OpenAI and Oracle Corp.’s Stargate project in Abilene, Texas. The first two buildings are up and running and six more are under construction, for a total of 1.2 gigawatts, Crusoe said in a statement. A gigawatt is enough electricity to power about 750,000 US homes at any one time. Microsoft Corp. is Crusoe’s customer for an extension of the Stargate campus to provide an additional 900 megawatts. Ground was recently broken on that site, Crusoe said. Read More: Inside the First Stargate AI Data Center Denver-based Crusoe also has contracts for two other large campuses in Texas and one in Missouri. One of the two Texas projects is in Claude, near Amarillo, where a local TV station has reported Google will occupy the site. Crusoe declined to name the tenants for any of those projects or for the paused Wyoming site. Founded in 2018, Crusoe specializes in big data center projects for artificial intelligence work. The 4.9 gigawatt-total also includes capacity for the company’s own cloud service. The total project pipeline — including contracts, sites in discussions with tenants and sites under advanced development — is more than 40 gigawatts, Crusoe said. Mesut Dogan/iStock Editorial via Getty Images Oracle Remains A "Buy" Ahead Of Earnings I wrote about Oracle Corporation ( ORCL ) on Seeking Alpha twice , and in both cases, I was bullish on the stock, seeing a reasonable upside potential that should have come from AI initiatives and explosive growth in demand for ORCL's services. When ORCL dipped heavily in early 2026, I updated my coverage with a view that ORCL's margins were likely to expand amid the cloud infrastructure scaling and better operating leverage—I saw an upside potential of ~27%, and I see that Oracle has already climbed to my previous price target. The firm is burning a lot of cash on CAPEX on future capacity built out, and the debt load is getting bigger. But there's an important thing that helps Oracle stay financially flexible—the management is running a customer-prepayment financing model, so the firm's balance sheet risks seem to be minimal, in my opinion. I believe their cloud networking moat is becoming more durable, and the RPO dynamics prove that we'll likely see a massive re-acceleration in ORCL's top-line growth ahead. They're reporting earnings tomorrow after close, according to Seeking Alpha , and I'm staying bullish on the stock ahead of that event. Why Do I Think So? When Oracle reported last time, its stock price popped by over 9% on the day. Although there was some heavy selling going into April 2026, ORCL eventually recovered, and it is now trading 40%+ above its price prior to the fiscal Q3 2026 earnings release: TrendSpider Software, ORCL, notes added The firm's sales came in at $17.19 billion (+22% YoY), beating the consensus by ~1.66%, per Seeking Alpha data , and on the bottom line, we saw an adjusted EPS of $1.79 (+21% YoY), which was a beat of 5.69%. Seeking Alpha, ORCL As the management noted on the call, Q3 was the first quarter in the past 15 years when Oracle had both organic sales and EPS growth rates above 20% on a YoY basis. So, the initial post-earnings bullish moveme...
