South Korea investors piled into tech giants including Samsung and SK hynix as they brushed off Donald Trump's latest tariff threat (Jung Yeon-je) · Jung Yeon-je/AFP/AFP Stock markets gained Tuesday as investors geared up for the US Federal Reserve's policy meeting and earnings from tech titans, which will be pored over for signs of AI momentum. Nearing the half-way stage in Europe, London and Paris advanced while Frankfurt dipped, following also news that the European Union and India had struck a free trade deal. Brushing off South Korea-US tariff concerns, Asian stocks markets were buoyed by "hopes of strong earnings from the US tech heavyweights in the next couple of days", said Richard Hunter, head of markets at Interactive investor. Tech firms are enjoying a fresh boost ahead of earnings releases as traders continue to pile into all things artificial intelligence. Apple, Meta, Microsoft and Tesla give updates this week, with other bellwethers including Texas Instruments, Boeing and Mastercard providing an idea about the state of the US economy. However, concerns remain over the scale of investment in AI, leaving some nervousness on trading floors about when profits will be realised. Investors attention was also on the Federal Reserve's policy meeting starting Tuesday. The US central bank is Wednesday widely expected to maintain the level of its key interest rates. "Markets aren't expecting any changes to lending rates, but markets will be watching keenly to see if Chair (Jerome) Powell, who's kept a tight grip on monetary policy, is to be replaced by a Trump dove," said Derren Nathan, head of equity research at Hargreaves Lansdown. US President Donald Trump has meanwhile reverted back to tariff threats this week, warning South Korea he would impose 25 percent tolls on goods including autos for falling short of expectations on an earlier pact struck with Washington. The announcement comes months after the two sides struck a trade and security deal following tens...

Micron's off to a hot start in 2026. How high can it go? Micron (MU 2.64%) has been one of the biggest winners of the artificial intelligence (AI) boom, and it was nearly the top-performing stock on the S&P 500 last year, finishing up 239% as you can see from the chart below. The stock has continued to rally into 2026, and you can see that most of the gains came in the last third of the year. Last September, I predicted that Micron would soar over the next three years, and it's exceeded those expectations, jumping more than 150% since then. Micron's momentum has only accelerated since then, driven by a memory-chip shortage in the industry, which driven up prices, and the company's own strong execution. After breaking out since September, here's what to expect for Micron this year. Where Micron is going in 2026 Through Jan. 23, Micron stock is already up 40% year-to-date on signs that the memory shortage is only getting worse and prices are continuing to rise. Intel said on its earnings call last Thursday that supply constraints and rising prices in memory have become "a very big challenge," as CEO Lip-Bu Tan called it, and Wall Street analysts have observed in recent weeks that supply and demand dynamics for memory continue to tighten, favoring further price increases. Micron has already contracted out its entire high-bandwidth memory supply for 2026, but what happens now will impact pricing into 2027 and possibly 2028. Meanwhile, the company is undertaking a major capacity expansion project as it just broke ground on a $100 billion leading-edge memory manufacturing complex in upstate New York that will have up to four fabs (or factories) and will be the largest semiconductor facility in the U.S., with production aiming to start in 2030. That's a reminder of another of Micron's competitive advantages, as there are only three major memory chip manufacturers in the world and the other two, SK Hynix and Samsung, are based in South Korea. While Intel has gotten more att...

Here is the latest in trending: My precious: Gold is at it again, topping $5,100 in the latest session. Silver also notched new highs, but JPMorgan's Kolanovic issued a new warning . Delays? Asia markets rise despite new U.S. duties on certain South Korean goods in response to the failure to ratify last year's trade deal . Medical rates: Shares of insurers tanked on a proposal to hold payments to private Medicare plans nearly flat in 2027 . Seeking alternatives As President Trump levels tariffs on nations across the globe, along with recurring threats on trade, some countries are looking for deals of their own, given the new business environment. Canada's Mark Carney just came back from China after looking to reset relations there, which triggered a backlash from the White House. However, these scenarios are looking increasingly likely going forward, with several high-profile trips on the horizon. Quote: "I'm often invited to simply choose between countries. I don't do that," U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said ahead of this week's visit to Beijing. "I remember when I was doing the U.S. trade deal, and everybody put to me that I'd have to make a choice between the U.S. and Europe, and I said, 'I'm not making that choice.'" The mission to China will mark the first by a British prime minister in nearly a decade, and he'll be bringing along representatives from companies such as AstraZeneca ( AZN ), BP ( BP ), Rolls-Royce ( RYCEY ), Prudential ( PUK ) and HSBC ( HSBC ). The four-day stop will see Starmer meet with President Xi Jinping, along with Premier Li Qiang and top legislator Zhao Leji. Finland Prime Minister Petteri Orpo also arrived in China with an extended delegation earlier this week, while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has a trip scheduled for February. United Parcel Service ( UPS ) rallied in early action Tuesday after the delivery company issued a better-than-anticipated earnings report. Revenue was 3.2% lower than a year ago during the quarter at $21.5 billion, and adjusted EPS came in at $2.38 vs. $2.20 consensus. Revenue in the U.S. domestic segment was down 3.2% year-over-year to $16.8 billion vs. $16.3 billion consensus, primarily driven by an expected decline in volume. Revenue per piece grew by 8.3%. International package segment revenue was up 2.5% to $5.1 billion vs. $5.0 billion, driven by a 7.1% increase in revenue per piece. Supply chain solutions revenue fell 12.7% to $2.7 billion vs. the $2.7 billion consensus estimate. The revenue decline was primarily due to a decline in volume in the Mail Innovations business. UPS' ( UPS ) reported a consolidated non-GAAP adjusted operating margin of 10.5% of sales for the quarter. Notably, UPS ( UPS ) said GAAP results included total charges of $238 million, or $0.28 per diluted share, comprised of a non-cash, after-tax charge of $137 million due to a write-off of the company’s MD-11 aircraft fleet and after-tax transformation charges of $101 million. CEO update: "2025 was a year of considerable progress for UPS as we took action to strengthen our revenue quality and build a more agile network. For the full year, UPS ( UPS ) expects revenue to be approximately $89.7 billion vs. $88.0B consensus, and non-GAAP adjusted operating margin to be approximately 9.6%. California probes US TikTok over claims it censors anti-Trump content 2 hours ago Share Save Liv McMahon Technology reporter Share Save Getty Images The Democratic governor of California, Gavin Newsom, has announced an investigation into claims TikTok has censored content which is critical of the Trump administration. A deal was concluded last Thursday to split off the US operation of the app - three days later thousands of American users began reporting problems including seeing "zero views" on new posts. Many also reported being unable to see political posts, such as content criticising the shooting by federal agents of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis on Saturday. TikTok has not commented on accusations this is related to last week's deal, blaming user problems on a "major infrastructure issue" relating to a data centre power outage. However, Newsom's office says it has received confirmed reports of TikTok suppressing content critical of President Trump. "Following TikTok's sale to a Trump-aligned business group, our office has received reports - and independently confirmed instances - of suppressed content critical of President Trump," wrote the California governor's office on X on Monday. It said Newsom would be "launching a review of this content" and probe whether the company had violated the state's laws. The BBC has asked TikTok's new US parent company, TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, for a response. Newsom declared earlier on Monday it was "time to investigate" TikTok over censorship concerns. His post linked to another X user's post containing a screenshot from TikTok, that appeared to show the video-sharing app flagging up a message they tried to send saying "Epstein". Allow X content? A branch of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will help with security for the Winter Olympics in Italy, it confirmed on Tuesday, sparking anger and warnings they were not welcome. Reports had been circulating for days that the agency embroiled in an often brutal immigration crackdown in the United States could be involved in US security measures for the February 6-22 Games in northern Italy. In a statement overnight, ICE said: “At the Olympics, ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) is supporting the US Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service and host nation to vet and mitigate risks from transnational criminal organisations. Advertisement “All security operations remain under Italian authority.” It’s not known whether HSI has been involved in past Olympics, or whether this is a first.
