A day after the FDA approval of Eli Lilly’s ( LLY ) oral weight loss therapy, orforglipron, Novo Nordisk ( NVO ) announced data to suggest that its rival product, the Wegovy pill, was superior to the newly approved option. Citing a simulated treatment comparison from its ORION study, the Danish drugmaker stated that Wegovy tablets at a 25 mg dose caused a superior weight loss compared to orforglipron 36 mg, indicating a 3.2% average difference. The results came hours after Eli Lilly ( LLY ) announced the U.S. approval of orforglipron under the brand name Foundayo. The decision paves the way for the latest oral treatment option in the obesity space following the FDA nod for the pill version of Novo’s ( NVO ) popular weight loss therapy Wegovy, also known as semaglutide, in December. “Since its approval, we've seen strong interest in the Wegovy pill from both healthcare professionals and people seeking obesity therapy," said Jamey Millar, head of U.S. operations at Novo Nordisk ( NVO ). ORION was an indirect treatment comparison study that evaluated the efficacy and tolerability of oral semaglutide versus orforglipron using data from late-stage trials that enrolled obese or overweight adults with at least one weight-related condition except diabetes. The company plans to present ORION study results at the Obesity Medicine Association's annual conference scheduled to take place in San Diego next month. Additionally, citing an online patient preference study conducted in November, Novo ( NVO ) said that 84% of survey respondents preferred a treatment option with characteristics similar to oral semaglutide. “These findings suggest potential differentiation and provide valuable insights to inform clinical decision- making,” the company added. Their command and control of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is being decimated as we speak," President Trump stated in his address from the White House last night . "Their ability to launch missiles and drones is dramatically curtailed, and their weapons factories and rocket launchers are being blown to pieces, very few of them left." Trump said further that the United States is "on the cusp of ending Iran's sinister threat to America and the world . " He declared that Israel and the United States are nearing their main goals in the war against Iran and that the conflict would end soon, though he gave no clear timeline. He repeatedly emphasized the war was close to finishing in his address, but didn't define what 'mission accomplished' would look like exactly. The key thing is that no concrete timeline was given . In the speech, Trump highlighted the "swift, decisive and overwhelming" blows delivered to Iran over the past four weeks, calling them "victories like few people have ever seen before." He did not specify when operations would end but said the US would strike Iran "extremely hard" over the next two-three weeks while negotiations cont...

Tesla Inc. posted one of its worst sales quarters in years, missing Wall Street’s expectations, as the carmaker struggles to turn around its core business and navigate an increasingly challenged electric-vehicle market. The company delivered 358,023 vehicles worldwide in the first quarter, according to a statement Thursday. Analysts anticipated 372,160 on average among estimates compiled by Bloomberg, a figure that steadily dropped in recent weeks. It’s the second consecutive quarter that Tesla has fallen short of projections. Deliveries still managed to rise 6.3% from a year earlier, when the carmaker paused Model Y production at plants around the globe and dealt with a consumer backlash against Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk . Investors have mostly been willing to overlook Tesla’s sales trend as Musk has refocused around the futuristic business lines of artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles and robotics. Still, the traditional car business remains the primary cash generator for the Austin-based company, making it crucial that Tesla finds traction even as US electric-vehicle demand wavers. Tesla shares fell 4% as of 9:05 a.m. before regular trading in New York, extending declines amid a broad market slump. The stock declined 15% this year through Wednesday’s close and has fallen 22% from a record high in December. The US — Tesla’s largest market — is entering a new era for EV demand following the loss of federal incentives that had been subsidizing purchases. The phase-out of those incentives at the end of September heavily skewed sales in the second half of last year. President Donald Trump has sought to eliminate what he called an EV mandate by eliminating tax credits and weakening emissions and fuel-efficiency requirements, leading many automakers to reinvest in gas-powered models. Aside from the US market headwinds, Tesla is also grappling with rising competition from Chinese EV makers around the world and an aging vehicle lineup. The company is disco...

In today’s edition, we look at Johannesburg’s decaying infrastructure and a new style of electioneering, as well as: African governments reacting to surging oil prices Russia sending more weapons to Madagascar And Chinese miners joining an African copper-rail project Swimming in a Pothole Helen Zille donned a wetsuit and snorkel and stepped into a giant water-filled pothole on a suburban Johannesburg street. The 75-year-old South African politician even tried the backstroke as she literally waded into the debate on failing infrastructure in the continent’s richest city. The crater from a burst pipe had raised the ire of residents for about three years. The spectacle soon trended on social media, highlighting not only the service-delivery problems in the city, but how her bid to become Johannesburg’s next mayor for the Democratic Alliance has redefined usually staid election campaigning. Much has already been written about the decline of South Africa’s main industrial and financial hub following years of neglect, mismanagement , graft and political instability. Water shortages have reached crisis levels, with residents rioting in areas subjected to weeks of empty taps. The stakes are high — further decay could weigh on investments in an already sluggish national economy. For some, in a metro where axel-busting roads and broken traffic lights are common, Zille’s swim was a humorous recognition of lived reality. Others simply brushed it off as a gimmick — the former mayor of Cape Town and ex-opposition-party leader had already posted videos of fixing a damaged road and directing traffic at a chaotic intersection. The campaign shift appears to be working. A poll by the Social Research Foundation shows support for the DA has climbed 13 percentage points to 39% since the previous local election in 2021 — making it the most ...
