European Central Bank Executive Board member Piero Cipollone sees “good momentum” for a digital euro, with a possible launch in July 2029. “There is enough consensus for this project to go through,” the Italian official told Latvian TV on Wednesday. “We are on a good track, I see a good momentum also from the legislative part. I see the banks are getting more interested in participating in the pilot.” Cipollone expressed his expectation that “we will be able to deliver on time,” adding that “I don’t see any major hurdle between now and the time we will issue the digital euro.” After years of slow progress, member states in December agreed on a common position on the European Commission’s proposal from 2023. At present, the European Parliament is finalizing its views, after already voting in February for online and offline versions of the digital single currency. If that’s done, negotiations between the two co-legislators can start. Policymakers including ECB President Christine Lagarde have repeatedly expressed concerns about Europe’s reliance on US payment firms like Visa and Mastercard , as well as dollar-pegged stablecoins championed by Donald Trump . “If we have the legislation in place by the end of the year, we will be issuing the digital euro by July 2029,” Cipollone said Wednesday. Gas-fired power plants set UK electricity prices about two-thirds of the time last month, highlighting the fuel’s stubborn grip on the market even as renewable generation continues to climb. The data shows a growing mismatch between how Britain produces its power and how prices are set. Gas accounted for only about a fifth of the electricity mix in March, yet it mostly remained the country’s “marginal” fuel, the last — and most expensive — fuel brought on to meet demand. With gas costs rising sharply last month following the outbreak of war in Iran, the issue is front-of-mind for policymakers, not only in Britain but throughout Europe. The head of the International Energy Agency last week urged countries in the region to look at ways to sever the link between gas and power prices to keep a lid on rising energy bills for households and industry. “A fuel doesn’t need to dominate the generation mix to dominate the price formation,” said Ed Porter , European director at consultant Modo Energy. “The current pricing system masks the progress made by renewables, which isn’t always trickling through to prices.” In the UK, renewables — particularly wind and solar — supplied about 43% of electricity in March, close to a record, while gas made up only 22% of generation, according to the system operator. But with wholesale power prices typically determined by the costliest generator needed to meet demand, gas plants often set the price for all. This dynamic obscures the economic benefits of renewables and presents a dilemma for the government, which has insisted that investing in low-carbon power will bring bills down in the long run. Ministers have studied ways to decouple electricity prices from gas, but for now the system remains in place, causing pain for consumers bracing for another cost-of-living shock. UK day-ahead gas prices soared more than 60% in March, according to broker data compiled by Bloomberg. That drove power to the highest levels for the time of year since 2...
