What Happened? Shares of computer processor maker AMD (NASDAQ:AMD) fell 3.3% in the afternoon session after Microsoft unveiled its latest AI chip to reduce reliance on established chipmakers. Microsoft announced its Maia 200 chip, an AI accelerator built on an advanced process, intended to serve multiple AI models, including new ones from OpenAI. This development signaled a move by a major tech company to bring its chip design in-house, potentially shrinking the market for third-party suppliers and increasing competitive pressure. The stock market overreacts to news, and big price drops can present good opportunities to buy high-quality stocks. Is now the time to buy AMD? Access our full analysis report here, it’s free. What Is The Market Telling Us AMD’s shares are extremely volatile and have had 31 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business. The previous big move we wrote about was 5 days ago when the stock gained 6.2% on the news that it received a series of positive developments, including upbeat analyst commentary, a new board appointment, and bullish sentiment on artificial intelligence spending. KeyBanc reiterated its "Overweight" rating and $270 price target, pointing to strong server CPU demand. The firm noted that hyperscalers were already securing 2026 capacity, with AMD nearly sold out of server CPUs through the end of that year. Adding to the optimism, Bernstein raised its price target on the stock from $200 to $225. The positive mood was also bolstered by comments from Nvidia's CEO at the World Economic Forum, who outlined a vision for trillions of dollars in new AI infrastructure spending. Separately, AMD announced the appointment of KC McClure, former Chief Financial Officer of Accenture, to its board of directors. AMD is up 12.2% since the beginning of the year, and at $250.81 per share, it...

Brett_Hondow/iStock Editorial via Getty Images BNP Paribas Equity Research senior analyst Andrew Buscaglia on Monday said Eaton’s ( ETN ) decision to spin off its mobility group should unlock shareholder value by sharpening the company’s focus on higher growth businesses. “As opposed to an outright sale, a spinoff is more attractive given its tax-free nature,” Buscaglia wrote, adding that the mobility assets had increasingly been viewed by investors as non-core to Eaton’s ( ETN ) long-term strategy. Details of the proposed transaction Eaton said before markets opened that it plans to separate its mobility group, which includes the vehicle and e-mobility businesses, into a standalone publicly traded company. The tax-free spinoff is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027 and is designed to create two distinct companies with clearer strategic priorities. Mobility contribution has faded BNP Paribas estimates that Eaton’s ( ETN ) vehicle and e-mobility units will generate about $3.1 billion in combined sales in 2025, representing roughly 11% of total revenue. Buscaglia noted that as Eaton’s ( ETN ) electricals and aerospace segments expanded over the past five years, mobility became less impactful to earnings and increasingly peripheral to the investment thesis. Margins and growth trail the group According to BNP Paribas forecasts, the vehicle segment is expected to post an adjusted operating margin of 16.2% in 2025, while e-mobility is projected to operate at a loss. Both compare unfavorably with Eaton’s ( ETN ) expected corporate average margin of more than 24%. Organic sales growth in mobility has also lagged the high single-digit to low double-digit growth seen in electricals and aerospace. Valuation and financial effect Buscaglia said BNP Paribas assigns an enterprise value of about $3.5 billion to the mobility group based on a sum-of-the-parts analysis, though balance sheet details and separation costs have yet to be disclosed. Eaton ( ETN ) has said the tr...

Josh Shapiro sees light in his constituents, even in dark times Gov. Josh Shapiro has dealt with plenty of weighty topics. He's investigated abuse in the Catholic Church as Pennsylvania's attorney general. He and his family were the victims of an arson attack in 2005 – an attack that was motivated, in part, by his Jewish faith. And the Democrat dislikes what he's seeing from the Trump administration, which he describes as "chaos and cruelty." But the governor, in his first term leading Pennsylvania, tells NPR, "I see people who are bringing light in their communities every single day, solving problems." Shapiro is often mentioned in conversations about Democrats who might vie for the White House in 2028, but for now, he says, he's focused on the midterms. He's running for a second term, and he's got his eye on election security, in anticipation of conspiracy theories and lawsuits that could undermine the process. Sponsor Message Shapiro sat down with All Things Considered in an interview timed to the release of his memoir, Where We Keep the Light. He shares his memories of that terrible night during Passover, when for the first time, he listened to a law enforcement briefing not just as a leader, but as a victim.

Markets will receive quarterly reports from two of the top software and hardware companies this week resptively, with Microsoft MSFT set to release results for its fiscal second quarter on Wednesday, January 28, and Apple AAPL reporting results for its fiscal first quarter on Thursday, January 29. Microsoft’s standout software successes are overwhelmingly in cloud infrastructure and AI-optimized services with respect to its Azure Cloud Platform, enterprise support services, and Microsoft 365 office apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Meanwhile, Apple’s biggest wins have come from its custom AI-powered silicon chips (M-Series), which are powering new product lines for its MacBook computers, iPads, iPhones, and other emerging AI-centric hardware devices. That said, let’s see which Mag 7 tech giant may be the better investment as their quarterly results approach. Microsoft’s Q2 Expectations Based on Zacks estimates, sales for Microsoft’s fiscal second quarter are expected to be up 15% to $80.23 billion. On the bottom line, Q2 EPS is slated to spike 20% to $3.88. Notably, Microsoft has surpassed the Zacks EPS Consensus for 13 consecutive quarters, posting an average EPS surprise of 8.53% over its last four quarterly reports. Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Apple’s Q1 Expectations As for Apple, sales for its fiscal first quarter are thought to be up 10% to $137.47 billion, with Q2 EPS expected to rise 10% as well to $2.65. Apple has surpassed the Zacks EPS Consensus for 11 straight quarters with an average EPS surprise of 5.42% over its last four quarterly reports. Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Tracking Microsoft & Apple’s Outlook Zacks estimates now call for Microsoft’s FY26 sales to increase 13% to $325.06 billion compared to $281.72 billion last year. Plus, FY27 sales are projected to rise another 14% to $371.89 billion. Microsoft’s annual earnings are forecasted to rise 14% this year to $15.62 per shar...

00:00 Dan Microsoft announced its Maya 200 chip. Uh it's uh basically built specifically for AI and Microsoft says that it'll be running in its data center with its super intelligent uh uh business, basically to run its own and uh open AI models. And so it's just kind of getting started using the chip. uh and then eventually it'll open it up uh to third-party customers to be able to use from Microsoft's data center. So it's not exactly selling these chips at all. uh but if people want to be able to run some apps using it, they will be able to when they sign up for for Azure and and such. This is down the line again. Uh and it really is basically uh a response to two things. One is uh Google and Amazon uh and their own chips. We've seen Google, they're on their seventh generation custom AI chip. Amazon has their third generation uh chip as well. And then to kind of reduce their reliance on Nvidia's chips. So it's it's kind of a threat to Nvidia. 01:05 Dan As we've seen from, you know, uh the the headlines where you know, Google announces its a new chip, Amazon announces a new chip. You know, this this idea of Microsoft and Google and Amazon being threats to to Nvidia is real in the sense that it takes away business from Nvidia that that these companies would would ordinarily be. Uh but I I don't see this as being something along the lines of like, you know, an existential threat to uh Nvidia. Uh none of these chips are going to be kind of the as powerful uh or as uh general purpose as Nvidia's own chips. But it is still something that's worth keeping an eye on because Nvidia does get a lot of its revenue from these hyperscalers somewhere uh a little bit uh uh along the lines around 50%. Uh I believe a little uh a little more, a little less. uh uh but it's it's in that ballpark. Uh and so, you know, if at some point these companies decide to just go all in on their own chips, then that would be a blow to Nvidia. However, their customers of the these these big cloud co...

Richard Drury/DigitalVision via Getty Images News From the Weekend This has been one of the more eventful past weeks during the current Trump administration. The Davos conclave concluded with some semblance of clarity on what the fate of Greenland might be . A U.S. aircraft carrier strike group arrived off the shore of Iran as IRGC ground personnel scramble. China had a political upheaval, and Cuba is also becoming a possible blockade target, similar to what preempted activities in Venezuela. The market ( VOO , IVV , DIA , Q QQ , VTWO ) continues to stabilize after the tariff talk at the Davos outset subsides. Let's review. China Has Another Political Shake-up In what is being called the biggest CCP political arrest since 1971 [When Mao Zedong moved to strip Lin Biao of his power over the military], General Zhang Youxia, considered second in command to Xi Jinping in regard to the military and possibly the country, was purged. The majority of the PLA military command has now been purged or demoted for various charges. In the case of Zhang, the charge officially is leaking Chinese nuclear secrets to U.S. intelligence. While some are skeptical of the charge, believing it was levied to be serious enough to stick, what's done is done, and Xi Jinping has further consolidated power. One positive catalyst from this may be related to Taiwan and the possible delay of any possibility of a Chinese invasion. From the outside, the PLA now appears to be fractionalized and not all on the same page. Leadership positions may not be as desirable now with the series of purges that have occurred, and convincing those that are capable below the general rank to move up in command may be difficult. The reason why the arrest of Zhang Youxia was a big deal is that he was considered a close ally of Xi and widely respected. This is an important matter now making its way through Western media headlines. The Abraham Lincoln Has Arrived Many were counting the days until a new Iran strike during t...
