Here's what the company reported for the fourth quarter compared with what Wall Street was expecting, based on a survey of analysts by LSEG: Earnings per share: $2.11 adjusted vs. $2.10 expected Revenue: $113.2 billion vs. $113.82 billion expected The results come two days after UnitedHealth CEO Stephen Hemsley and other chief executives of Minnesota's largest businesses banded together to sign an open letter calling for an "immediate deescalation of tensions" in the state after federal immigration agents fatally shot U.S. citizen Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse. UnitedHealth is banking on a new leadership team to carry out a turnaround plan. The strategy involves shrinking membership, raising prices, cutting benefits and increasing transparency to restore profitability — along with the company's reputation — after a series of hurdles over the last two years. UnitedHealth expects 2026 revenue to exceed $439 billion, a 2% year-over-year decline that reflects "right-sizing across the enterprise," the company said in a release. That comes far below the $454.6 billion in sales that analysts were expecting for the year. "It's the first time in a decade that UnitedHealth Group has had declining revenue," CFO Wayne DeVeydt said in an interview, referring to the sales guidance. draganab/iStock via Getty Images I'm evaluating Spotify Technology ( SPOT ) stock today. Its stock is down nearly 25% in the last six months. Data by YCharts So I want to get an idea of what its valuation says about expectations and how likely or not the company is to meet those. As I outline in the paragraphs that follow, recent trends and reverse DCF modeling reveal that the company is well-positioned for long-term compounding. Background I'm going to start by getting an idea of how the company makes money. So Spotify makes money via premium subscription and ad-supported revenue from its free tier. The "cost of revenues" line on its income statement is basically the "royalties bucket," which is Spotify's largest expense by far. In the third quarter, the cost of revenues made up 68.38% of total revenues. Just a couple of years ago, this figure was 73%. This is the direct cost of providing the service, and the majority of this goes to royalty payments to record labels, like Sony and Warner, publishers, and independent distributors. So if you take the total revenues of ~$5.02 billion in Q3 and subtract the cost of revenue, Spotify's gross profit was roughly $1.59 billion. Spotify's operating income, which is the actual profit from operations after all bills are paid, was $683.3 million in Q3. Trends So I wanted to map this out to kind of show people that Spotify is really just working with a sliver of gross profit. In other words, it doesn't have a lot of leeway because of royalty payments. Any “operating leverage” results predominantly from revenues rising while costs like SG&A and R&D remain the same (and, thus, become a larger portion of revenues). That said, even small improvements to gross margins flow directly into the bottom line.
