Trump's shadow looms over India-EU trade deal 14 minutes ago Share Save Vikas Pandey Delhi Share Save Reuters Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and EU leaders Ursula von der Leyen and António da Costa radiated cheer as they posed for reporters ahead of the deal's announcement The trade deal between India and the European Union is as much about geopolitics as it's about intercontinental business relations. The EU is already India's largest partner with trade in goods reaching $142.3bn (£104.07bn) in 2024, amounting to 11.5% of the South Asian nation's total trade. India is the EU's ninth largest trading partner. These are impressive numbers and reflect strong relations. And yet, trade talks were stuck for two decades. That raises the question: what's changed now? The answer lies in the fast-evolving geopolitical landscape and the unpredictability of the US administration under President Donald Trump. The US leader has used tariffs as a bargaining chip in some negotiations but he has often used them to punish countries, including partners, which don't agree with his worldview. The US has imposed 50% tariffs on Indian goods, which include a 25% penalty for Delhi's refusal to stop buying oil from Russia. Some EU countries recently faced fresh tariff threats from Trump as the US president was put out by their refusal to accept his proposed takeover of Greenland. He later withdrew the threat, but experts say it did rattle the EU. The EU and India are not alone in looking to hedge their bets when it comes to the US – the free trade agreement (FTA) in Delhi was secured amid a flurry of countries striking deals and patching things up as they try to cope with global unpredictability. The EU-India pact - the seventh trade deal India has completed recently - comes after Brussels signed a trade accord with South American trade bloc Mercosur earlier this month after 25 years of negotiation. Experts say the Trump factor helped speed that up too, though it's now facing legal chal...

The Hollywood actor is about to go stratospheric thanks to Nouvelle Vague, a film about the making of Jean-Luc Godard’s masterpiece. How did she feel about playing the blond gamine in some of cinema’s best loved scenes? Richard Linklater’s latest film Nouvelle Vague is not so much a re-enactment of cinema history, but a celebratory tribute act – joyously reliving the spirit of the early French New Wave, as it re-imagines 1959 Paris and the chaotically innovative shooting of Jean-Luc Godard’s epoch-making Breathless (A Bout de Souffle). Most of the cast are newcomers, but there’s one familiar face: American actor Zoey Deutch. She plays Jean Seberg, already a Hollywood star when Godard cast her as expat student and newspaper vendor Patricia. Seberg’s stroll with Jean-Paul Belmondo on the Champs-Elysées, in T-shirt, slacks and ballet flats, is one of the legendary duets of French cinema. Deutch has Seberg’s style down impeccably: her awkward American-accented French, her balletic bounce in that scene, her exuberant shout of “New York Herald Tribune!” On a Zoom call from Los Angeles, Deutch – Seberg’s blond gamine cut now grown out into symmetrical black bangs – admits that when Linklater first suggested she might play the role, she knew nothing about Seberg, or about Breathless. That was way back in 2014, when they were shooting Linklater’s college baseball comedy Everybody Wants Some!! “I was 19,” says Deutch, “and I know there are plenty of 19-year-olds who are cinephiles and know a ton about that world, but I didn’t.” Continue reading...

This article first appeared on GuruFocus. Meta Platforms Inc. (META, Financials) plans to introduce paid subscription options across Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, expanding its revenue model beyond advertising. According to a TechCrunch report confirmed by Meta, the new plans will unlock advanced AI features and creative tools for paying users. The company said the subscriptions are designed to enhance productivity and creativity while giving users more control over their experience. The initiative builds on Meta's December acquisition of Manus, a Singapore-based AI startup purchased for $2 billion. The company plans to scale Manus's general AI agents as part of the subscription rollout. Meta's push into paid offerings could help recoup the heavy investments it made in AI development last year. While its Llama language models remain free and open source, competitors like OpenAI and Google already offer paid tiers for their AI products. The subscription options will be separate from Meta Verified, which is a service for creators and corporations that started in 2023 and offers account verification, support, and security solutions. Meta said that it will listen to what users have to say as it tries the new model over the next few months.

DKosig Sonos ( SONO ) introduced a new product for the first time in more than a year on Tuesday. The Amp Multi product was described as a professional-grade, rack-mountable multi-channel streaming amplifier aimed at advanced users and custom installers rather than the mass market. The new component can power up to four independently configurable Sonos zones and eight amplified outputs from a single unit, making it well-suited for larger, luxury homes where the hardware is hidden in an equipment rack while driving traditional in-wall or in-ceiling speakers across the property. Ampi Multi, which is positioned within Sonos' ( SONO ) components business alongside products like Amp and Port, is designed to deepen adoption of the Sonos ( SONO ) platform in whole-home installations and embed the system into the architecture of the home instead of relying solely on visible, standalone speakers. The launch of Ampi Multi effectively marks the end of an intentional pause in hardware releases while new CEO Tom Conrad focused on fixing the troubled mobile app and rebuilding brand reputation following the botched software overhaul and the departure of former chief executive Patrick Spence. While Amp Multi itself is a niche, installer-focused product, it could serve as an early proof point for Conrad’s strategy to grow revenue by increasing the number of Sonos devices per household. "We created Amp Multi with integrators at the heart of every decision, drawing on their deep understanding of real-world installation challenges to design a product around how they actually work," stated Chris Heintzelman, VP, Product at Sonos ( SONO ). Shares of Sonos ( SONO ) are down 14.8% for the early part of 2026. NextEra Energy Inc. is offering large amounts of power for sale from its nuclear plants in Wisconsin and New Hampshire, as major technology companies race to secure nuclear energy for artificial-intelligence data centers. The company owns the Point Beach power plant in Wisconsin and the Seabrook Station plant in New Hampshire, both outside regulated utility frameworks, allowing the electricity to be sold to the highest bidder. “Between the two of them, we have 1.7 gigawatts of capacity we’re offering to the market,” NextEra Chief Executive Officer John Ketchum told analysts on an earnings call Tuesday. A traditional nuclear reactor has about one gigawatt of capacity. The demand for nuclear power has surged in recent years as overall electricity consumption increases and tech companies seek reliable round-the-clock power that doesn’t emit carbon. The owner of the shuttered Three Mile Island nuclear plant said in late 2024 that it would reopen the infamous facility to supply to Microsoft Corp. And Meta Platforms Inc. struck a series of deals this month that would make it one of the world’s biggest corporate buyers of nuclear energy. Tech companies have shown a willingness to spend a hefty premium for nuclear power, with Microsoft agreeing to a significantly higher price for electricity from Three Mile Island than for wind and solar energy available in the same region, according to analysts. Read More: Meta Signs Multi-Gigawatt Nuclear Deals for AI Data Centers NextEra said late last year it would restart the Duane Arnold nuclear power plant in Iowa, primarily to supply Google data centers. “Wisconsin is in a great spot for data center build out, it’s no secret,” Ketchum said Tuesday. “With that comes a lot of interest around power-generation solutions.” NextEra also sees opportunities to develop six gigawatts of small-modular reactors, or new nuclear, at its existing nuclear sites, Ketchum said. The company expects announcements this year involving large-load customer...

European electric vehicle sales trends in 2025 show a widening gap between legacy EV leaders and fast-rising Chinese competitors, with Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) losing ground as BYD (BYDDF) gains momentum. New-car registrations for Tesla models across the European Union, the U.K., and several nearby markets fell 20% year over year in December to 35,280 units, data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association show. For the full year, Tesla registrations slid 27% to 238,656 units, pointing to softer demand in a region that once anchored its global growth story. BYD moved in the opposite direction. The Chinese automaker posted a 268.6% jump in European sales during 2025, reaching 187,657 units. Its regional market share rose to 1.4%, up from 0.4% a year earlier, as it expanded its lineup and pricing reach. Battery-electric vehicles accounted for 17.4% of total EU auto sales in 2025, up from 13.6% in 2024. Hybrid-electric vehicles remained the most popular option, capturing 34.5% of the market. Sales data for December also point to shifting preferences. Battery-electric registrations climbed 51%, plug-in hybrids rose 36.7%, and hybrid-electric vehicles grew 5.8%, while petrol and diesel continued to lose share. Wall Street Opinion on Tesla TSLA: Tesla Sales Fall 20% in Europe. Name: Rejection spreadsheets. Age: There’s nothing new in rejection. JK Rowling was rejected by 12 publishers, Elvis was told he couldn’t sing. Going back a little further, Cain had an offering of produce rejected by God himself, would you Adam and Eve it? But this is about rejection spreadsheets, right? Right. And they’re more recent. Go on, when did they begin? OK, so first let’s introduce Gabriella Carr. [Waves] Hi Gabriella Carr. In September last year, Ms Carr posted on TikTok and Instagram … Where else! Other platforms are available. Anyway, Carr posted a video of her goals and dreams for 2026. They included professional goals (she’s a video creator and actor), reading more books, gaining more followers … So far, so not very different from anyone else’s goals and dreams. She also held up a red notebook on which she’d written “The 1000 Nos of Gabriella Carr.” Nos as in … Yes, or rather the opposite of yes. Rejections. In her little red book, she lists jobs she’s applied for, roles and brand influencer campaigns she’s put herself up for, and been turned down. Why is she doing it, to keep a tally? “I know I’m delusional, but you kind of have to be to chase your dreams,” she said. “I’d rather try to fail than never try at all.” Almost turning a negative into something … if not positive, then some kind of achievement? I like it, I think. So do others. Guess what? It’s become a thing! Yes it has. “So there’s the 1,000 rejections girl,” announced another TikToker, @theplanistobefamous. “I’m doing what she’s doing, but I’ve got a spreadsheet!” And what has @theplanistobefamous got on his spreadsheet? Attempts on market sites to get things cheap (or for free!), networking opportunities and job applications (for quite ambitious jobs, “LA Times Studio Host”, for example). Still, aim high if it’s a no you’re after. I guess. In one row, he’s got “emailed Claudia” in the task column; followed in the status column by “Blocked”. That’s sad. No, it’s a victory! And lo, the 1,0...

Bill Pugliano | Getty Images DETROIT — General Motors expects to outproduce crosstown rival Ford Motor to become the top assembler of vehicles in the U.S. in the coming years. GM CEO and Chair Mary Barra announced the target Tuesday as the company reported its 2025 earnings and gave a 2026 outlook that included between $3 billion and $4 billion in expected tariff costs. "As we look further ahead, our annual production in the U.S. is expected to rise to an industry-leading 2 million units," Barra told investors, detailing previously announced plans to increase domestic production. GM's push to increase domestic production comes as tariffs from importing vehicles to the U.S. cost the company $3.1 billion in 2025. Based on the vehicles Barra mentioned, GM could reach its goal as early as 2027, depending on how quickly it ramps up production. The automaker next year is scheduled to add production of gas-powered crossovers currently made in Mexico to plants in Kansas and Tennessee as well as full-size SUVs and pickup trucks to a currently idled plant in Michigan. Aside from helping GM reduce its expected tariff costs, achieving that goal would take the title away from Ford, which has touted it in advertising and marketing efforts in recent years. Ford, which has called itself the "most American" automaker, assembled 2.1 million vehicles in the U.S., as of 2024, with 80% of its U.S. sales being assembled domestically. GM, meanwhile, is historically the top-seller of vehicles in the U.S. , but also was the largest importer of new vehicles to America in 2024, Bloomberg News reported last year. It imported approximately 1.23 million units that year — nearly half of its 2024 U.S. sales, according to the report. Neither Ford nor GM immediately responded for additional comment or details...

This article first appeared on GuruFocus. Micron Technology (NASDAQ:MU) shares climbed about 4% on Tuesday morning after the company outlined plans to expand its Singapore operations. The company said it will invest roughly $24 billion SG$31 billion over the next decade to build a new wafer fabrication facility at its existing campus. The site will include about 700,000 square feet of cleanroom space, with production of NAND memory chips expected to start in the latter half of 2028. Micron expects the project to create approximately 1,600 new jobs, adding to 1,400 roles at its high-bandwidth memory packaging facility, bringing total new positions in Singapore to around 3,000. The expansion comes amid strong AI-driven demand for memory chips, particularly high-bandwidth memory used in AI servers. Analysts note that surging data-center requirements have tightened the global memory supply, leaving fewer chips for consumer devices.

WASHINGTON, Jan 27 (Reuters) - Tiktok agreed to settle a social media addiction lawsuit on Tuesday, according to one of the plaintiff's lawyers. The case involves a 19-year-old from California, identified as K.G.M., who said she became addicted to social media platforms at a young age because of their attention-grabbing design, according to court filings. She blames her depression and suicidal thoughts on the apps she used and is seeking to hold the companies that designed them responsible. K.G.M. "reached an agreement in principle to settle her case" with TikTok, said Joseph VanZandt, a lawyer for K.G.M. Jury selection in the trial begins Tuesday. K.G.M.’s case is one of three scheduled test cases, known as “bellwether” trials, chosen from hundreds of related lawsuits accusing the platforms of harming youth. The company did not immediately respond to a request from Reuters for more details about the settlement. K.G.M.’s lawsuit named four defendants: YouTube, Meta, Snap and TikTok. Snap settled with K.G.M. on January 20. A Snap spokesperson and plaintiff’s attorneys declined to provide details to Reuters about that agreement. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is expected to testify as part of the trial. (Reporting by Courtney Rozen, Editing by Franklin Paul)

Posts from this author will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed. Removing or restricting access to Grok’s AI image editor might not be enough to stop the flood of nonconsensual sexualized images being generated by AI. A report from the Tech Transparency Project (TTP) released on Tuesday found dozens of AI “nudify” apps similar to Grok on Google and Apple’s platforms, as previously reported by CNBC. TTP identified 55 apps on the Google Play Store and 48 on Apple’s App Store that can “digitally remove the clothes from women and render them completely or partially naked or clad in a bikini or other minimal clothing.” These apps were downloaded over 705 million times worldwide, generating $117 million in revenue. According to CNBC, Google has suspended “several” of the apps TTP spotted and Apple has removed 28 of them (two of which were later restored). This is not the first report on AI nudify apps slipping through the cracks — Apple and Google had to respond to a similar report from 404 Media in 2024. Apple and Google have addressed the apps in TTP’s report, but X and Grok remain freely available on both companies’ app stores. As The Verge’s Elizabeth Lopatto has pointed out, Apple and Google were quick to remove the ICEBlock app, “while allowing X to generate degrading images of a woman ICE killed.”
