Despite the sector’s lack of glamour, there are hidden gems that deliver steady results thanks to disciplined underwriting or strong positions in niche markets. The best‑performing insurance carriers often combine both qualities and return excess capital through dividend increases and share‑repurchase programs. RLI is a true dividend compounder, having spent nearly five decades rewarding patient and loyal shareholders. The earnings season has kicked off, and several insurers have already released their FY2025 results, including Travelers ( TRV ) and Old Republic ( ORI ). While ORI’s results were not well received by investors, Travelers’ performance exceeded analysts’ expectations. As for RLI, which recently published its FY2025 results , the outcome was mind-blowing. Or at least, the company has beaten the market's expectations, with a strong fourth-quarter performance. The last time I covered RLI , my conclusion was the company was richly valued, despite undeniable strengths. As the FY2025 results have been published, it's time to reconsider my opinion, or at least to revisit it by deep-diving into Q4 2025 and FY2025 results. My Previous Coverage Looking at the Q4 report , I'll be the first to admit it isn't "great." Even though I see investors discussing that the results are okay, I would disagree. I can see why the stock went down on this news. But losing such a massive amount of market cap for a powerhouse like UnitedHealth looks like a major, major overreaction to me, and now I’ll explain why. The Q4 Numbers Besides looking at the misses or beats, or the guidance , I think it would be smart to discuss what they mean. The revenue of $113.2 billion is lower by $520 million than what was expected from UnitedHealth heading into the earnings, but it still represents a very healthy 12.3% year-over-year growth. For a company of this scale to grow double digits is very impressive, regardless of what was expected of this company to deliver. 2025 Results and 2026 Outlook Adjusted EPS reached $2.11, which was actually a slight beat or in-line depending on which consensus you follow, but the "shocker" was the GAAP EPS of just $0.01. This was a classic "kitchen sink" quarter, and it feels odd to me that the market doesn’t seem to recognize it. On a Monday night NBC News segment, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei expressed concern over “some of the things we’ve seen in the last few days,” referring to the violence of Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis. More than 40,000 signed home purchase agreements were canceled in December, representing 16.3% of all homes that went under contract, according to Redfin, a real estate brokerage. That's up from 14.9% in December 2024. It's is also the highest share since Redfin began tracking this metric in 2017. "High housing costs and rising inventory have made homebuyers more selective," said Chen Zhao, head of economics research at Redfin. "Home sellers outnumber buyers by a record margin, meaning the buyers who are in the market have options and may walk away if they believe they can find a better or more affordable home." TotalEnergies ( TTE ) is expected to hold a net long LNG position of ~14M metric tons/year in 2026, widening to 23M tons/year by 2030, which Kepler analyst Bertrand Hodée believes would leave the company with the greatest exposure to potential LNG oversupply, especially if prices slide toward $5/MMBtu. "In an oversupplied LNG market, a structurally long LNG portfolio cannot escape losses at the molecule level; it can only redistribute, defer, or partially offset them through integration (power) and optionality," Hodée said in a note. BP ( BP ) replaced the French company among Kepler's preferred European names, as Hodée highlighted the resilience of its LNG positioning into a downturn. The current conditions index and the expectations component fell by similar amounts with headline sentiment at its weakest since 2014 – so things are apparently worse for households today than they were post the 'Liberation Day' fallout and the pandemic. Consumer expectations & consumer spending Yet they keep spending... It is fair to say that the relationship between sentiment and spending has broken down of late, with sentiment surrounding the economic outlook at levels historically consistent with static spending, whereas real consumer spending expanded at 3.5% growth in 3Q 2025. This divergence likely reflects the narrative that the top 20% of households by income are driving the growth story while the bottom 60% by income are treading water. It is the median household, which is going to be within that bottom 60%, that is reflected in the sentiment survey. This provides ongoing evidence of the K-shaped story of the US economy. The bottom 60% are worried about their jobs, worried about tariffs squeezing spending power and with Federal Reserve data showing that the bottom 60% of households hold only 15% of total household wealth, they have not benefited much from the surge in property and stock prices. The top 20% of households by income spend more on services, so are not impacted by tariffs to the same degree, have a better sense of job security, and they hold 70% of household wealth.
