Applied Digital has been a juggernaut, but can it continue? There has been a ton of interest in Applied Digital (APLD +14.48%) stock, and for good reason. The stock of the company that develops artificial intelligence (AI) data centers has returned some 272% over the past year and is already up 42% year to date. While there's a massive amount of growth potential for Applied Digital, there are some concerns as well. The company carries a huge amount of debt to build its data centers, and at the same time, it is not yet profitable. Further, its future growth depends on not only building new centers, but filling them up with clients in an increasingly more competitive market. Then there is the fact that it has a concentrated client base made up of a few huge hyperscalers, so any changes to those relationships could pose a risk. Finally, it trades at an extremely high multiple, with an enterprise value-to-revenue ratio of 36. That means that the enterprise value, including market cap, debt, etc., is 36 times its revenue, which is a lot. The yen’s strongest three-day rally since August 2024 isn’t enough to turn Citigroup Inc. strategist Daniel Tobon into a yen bull just yet. To keep the gains going, he said, Japanese buyers will need to start shifting cash back to the nation’s bond market again. “The big trade is waiting for that pivot, waiting for that moment when we see that turn,” he said in an interview. “Once you have that confirmation, there could be more than 15% left in the yen rally after that.” The recent gains were spurred by speculation that Japan and the US were preparing to swoop in to prop up the currency after it slid close to 160 to the dollar, near the level that prompted Japanese officials to intervene in the market in 2024. It advanced another 1% Tuesday to below 153 to the dollar. The currency’s abrupt about-face came after the Japanese bond market was hit by waves of selling last week over concern that Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi ’s fiscal plans will add to the government’s already significant debt load. The rout pushed up Japanese bond yields sharply, potentially giving investors an incentive to pull cash from overseas and re-invest it domestically. It also raised the prospect that hedge funds will unwind carry trades, which involve borrowing money in Japan and reinvesting the proceeds in countries where rates are higher. BlackRock Inc. is cutting about 10 people from its private financing solutions group as it continues to integrate its $12 billion acquisition of HPS Investment Partners . At least three people who were on the firm’s private credit team prior to the purchase are among those affected, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The asset manager is reducing its workforce by about 250 globally, Bloomberg News reported earlier this month. Michael Weissenburger and Joshua Friedman, both executive directors, have left the firm, said the people, asking not to be identified discussing private information. Christian Donohue , a managing director, is in the process of leaving, they said. A representative for BlackRock declined to comment. TCP Troubles Donohue is listed as a managing director in presentations highlighting the investment team for the firm’s publicly traded lending fund, BlackRock TCP Capital Corp. Last week, the fund said it expects to cut the net value of its assets by 19% after being hurt by its exposure to e-commerce aggregators and troubled home improvement company Renovo Home Partners . The quarter began with a government shutdown that ended up being the longest on record and deprived market participants of official data used to assess the economic backdrop, creating an environment that lacked clarity and that drove mid-quarter volatility in Treasury and equity markets. Things came into greater focus, however, with the reopening in November and subsequent flow of data that solidified a marked deterioration in the labor market and easing of inflation, prompting a second 25 basis points (bps) rate cut by the Federal Reserve (Fed) for the quarter. Meanwhile, early signs of investor skepticism regarding Al-related spending and return on investment stoked valuation and concentration fears, though realized rate cuts and stronger-than-expected GDP estimates were more than enough to support risk sentiment and guide equity markets higher. The GDP figure also caused longer dated Treasury yields to rise in December as investors repriced growth expectations for 2026, though the 50 bps of Fed easing during the quarter ultimately supported broad fixed income performance and drove a continued steepening of the curve. An annual estimate from the Census Bureau Tuesday shows the nation's population grew by just 1.8 million people during the 12 months ending last June. That's about half the growth rate of the previous year. A major factor behind that slowing growth was the foreign-born population, which grew by 1.3 million during the year, a 52% smaller increase than the previous 12 months. That drop results from fewer people entering the country through legal channels as well as the voluntary or forced departure of some living in the country illegally.
