This restructuring aims to separate U.S. TikTok from its Chinese parent, addressing concerns about data privacy and foreign control. The move came after years of pressure from lawmakers, who feared the Chinese government’s potential access to Americans’ data. In 2024, Congress enacted a law, mandating that TikTok’s U.S. operations be separated from ByteDance. Under the new structure, about 80% of the U.S. TikTok entity is owned by non-Chinese investors, with ByteDance keeping only a 19.9% share. The newly formed entity, “TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC,” licenses TikTok’s recommendation algorithm from ByteDance and independently manages content moderation, and oversees data protection, algorithm security, and software controls. The managing investor group consists of Oracle, the private equity firm Silver Lake, and the investment firm MGX. Each holds a 15% stake, totaling 45% of the U.S. business. Here’s what you should know about them. Oracle Oracle is a leading cloud computing and database firm that collaborates with top companies, such as OpenAI. Oracle previously attempted to acquire TikTok and already provides cloud infrastructure for the app, managing its U.S. user data. Under the new deal, Oracle serves as the security partner, auditing TikTok’s compliance with U.S. security requirements, managing data storage, and overseeing updates to the content recommendation algorithm. It’s important to note that Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, now the company’s executive chairman and chief technology officer, is a prominent billionaire with known connections to President Trump. New Zealand could experience an increase in landslides – its most deadly natural hazard – as global warming triggers more intense and frequent storms, experts have warned in the wake of two landslide tragedies in the North Island. New Zealand’s landscapes are scarred with the evidence of landslides – they are responsible for more than 1,800 deaths since written records began – more than earthquakes and volcanoes combined. In January, a series of tropical storms swept through the North Island, bringing torrential rain and causing two fatal landslides. On Thursday morning, a landslide crashed into a holiday park, in Mount Maunganui in the eastern city of Tauranga, burying six people. Authorities have confirmed they are unlikely to be alive. Earlier that morning, another landslide tore through a house south of the city, killing two. On Wednesday, Tauranga city council evacuated 150 people from 30 homes in to assess a new slip posing a “risk to life”. As it grapples with the tragedies, questions have emerged over how the country can better protect itself from landslides and the increasingly extreme weather that can trigger them. New Zealand sits on a tectonic boundary, which pushes up land and creates slopes, and has a maritime climate with high rainfall – factors, which combined, make it prone to landslides. Humans are also responsible for reshaping the landscape including through deforestation, and cutting into slopes for transport and housing, says Martin Brook, professor of applied geology at the University of Auckland. “Land use change has been so profound, that we just aren’t resilient,” he said, adding that while mapping landslide susceptibility in regions had increased, the next step would be using that data to better inform planning decisions. Global warming, meanwhile, is already intensifying tropical storms that can set off landslides, said Dr Thomas Robinson, senior lecturer in disaster risk and resilience, specialising in landslides, at the University of Ca...

Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar attacked with 'unknown liquid' during town hall Watch: Moment Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar is attacked at town hall In a statement posted on X, Omar said: "I'm ok. I'm a survivor so this small agitator isn't going to intimidate me from doing my work. I don't let bullies win." "I thought it was her aide handing her something," Jacquelynn Goessling said of the irritant that was sprayed in Omar's direction, the smell of which consumed the front part of the room. Omar was uninjured and continued to speak. The man was immediately arrested and forensics were being conducted at the scene, police added. Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar was attacked with an unknown substance at a town hall she was hosting on Tuesday, when an audience member used a syringe to spray liquid at her, Minneapolis police said. After the incident, Omar told the room that "we will continue... we are Minnesota strong". Video from the scene shows the team shouting "make a hole" as they wrestled the man out of the room. As he was pushed out of the room, he said that Omar was "pitting us against each other". It was not immediately clear who the man was referring to. In a post on social media, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said: "Violence and intimidation have no place in Minneapolis. We can disagree without putting people at risk... This kind of behavior will not be tolerated in our city." In 2019, Omar became the first Somali-American, first African-born American, and one of the first two Muslim American women to serve in the US Congress. The event was one of the regular town halls hosted by Omar, and about 100 people were in attendance in the north Minneapolis basement, expecting to hear about the presence of federal immigration officials in their town and ask questions after the second fatal shooting of an American citizen by immigration officials this month. In January an immigration officer fatally shot US citizen Renee Good. Last week, US citizen Alex Pre...

Sundry Photography/iStock Editorial via Getty Images In August 2024, I wrote a bullish article about Micron ( MU ) suggesting it was undervalued. At that time, Micron shares traded for about $89, but the stock has recently experienced a powerful rally and now trades for about $400 per share. Since my article was published, this stock has provided total returns of about 350%, which beats the S&P 500 Index's ( SPY ) roughly 33% total returns in the same timeframe by nearly a 10x factor. This rally is fueled by unprecedented demand for memory chips used in AI data centers and other applications. However, this has also led to an unprecedented rally in memory stocks like Micron, which looks like a bubble and a blow-off top to me. I wrote this article when I saw what looked like a blow off top in Netflix ( NFLX ) in July 2025, and since then the stock has plunged about 35%. This shows it can pay off to sell when investor sentiment appears too optimistic and valuation appears rich. It seems some investors believe this time is different, forgetting that the chip sector, especially memory, is highly cyclical. I remember how Micron shares struggled to get over $100 per share back when I wrote my last article and now it seems like it is one of the most popular momentum stocks in the market. With all of this in mind, let's take a closer look at Micron and why this is possibly a great opportunity to cash in, before a potential bubble pops in the memory chip stocks: The Charts To gain maximum perspective on Micron and the chip sector rally, I think it makes sense to look at the 3 charts below. The first chart shows a one-year view for Micron; the stock traded around $60 during the April 2025 lows and now trades for about $400 per share. This stock appears overbought, trading well above the 50-day moving average (around $275) and the 200-day moving average (just about $165). StockCharts.com The chart below shows how Micron shares have traded over the past couple of decades. I thin...

Key Points Centrus Energy is a major refiner of raw uranium into usable nuclear fuel. Data centers are driving growth in demand for nuclear energy, but there is plenty of secular demand as well. Centrus is well-positioned to capitalize on both trends, allowing you to profit from AI while hedging your bets in case of a bubble. 10 stocks we like better than Centrus Energy › Artificial intelligence (AI) stocks, be they hardware companies like Nvidia or software companies like Alphabet, have delivered investors some solid returns in the past few years. Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Continue » But whenever there's a major bull run in a single industry or around a single trend, fears will begin to mount about a bubble forming and then about a bubble popping. And you don't have to look very far these days to find media sources talking about the possibility of an AI bubble. So, what's an investor to do? Obviously you want to hedge your bets so that if there is a bubble, your returns don't get wiped out. But if it's not a bubble and this AI bull market is going to keep going full steam ahead, you don't want to miss out. Well, fortunately, there are some stocks that will allow you to both hedge against a bubble and profit from the AI industry. And Maryland-based Centrus Energy (NYSE: LEU) is one such stock. Enrich your portfolio Centrus is a nuclear fuel refiner. Uranium's not like coal, you can't pull it out of the ground and burn it. Well, I guess you could but I wouldn't advise it. No, uranium needs to be enriched from the yellow powder most miners produce into uranium fuel pellets that go into the fuel rods a reactor runs on. And that, simply put, is what Centrus does. It produces or procures two different kinds of enriched uranium, low enriched uranium (LEU) and high-assay low enriched uranium (HALEU) which is used in the development of next-gen nuclear reactors to enable them t...

Tony Anderson/DigitalVision via Getty Images If you follow my work closely, you know that I analyze a number of homebuilders. About one player in the space that I don't follow nearly enough is NVR, Inc. ( NVR ). With a market capitalization of $22.14 billion, it is a pretty large firm. While it has been subject to the same pains that other players in the space have been recently, I would say that it has held up reasonably well. And in the time that I have been bullish about the company, it has outperformed the market a bit. Yes, since I last reaffirmed it as a ‘buy’ back in July of 2021, the stock has risen only 51.9%. That compares to the 58.7% rise that the S&P 500 achieved. But since I originally rated it a ‘buy’ in January of 2021, the stock has jumped 86.6%. The market, meanwhile, is up 81.2%. Even after this significant increase, there does seem to be some potential. But that hinges on a recovery in the homebuilding space more than it does anything else. Because of its strong balance sheet, I do believe that NVR, Inc. will be just fine. However, there are some more attractive prospects in the market from a valuation standpoint that deserve our attention. In light of this relative valuation disparity, I think that perhaps the best thing to do is to take a more neutral stance and downgrade it to a ‘hold’ at this moment. But of course, I am willing to accept that I could be wrong. You see, as new data comes in, I do my best to incorporate those results into my overall view of a company. And, on January 30th, management is expected to announce financial results for the final quarter of the 2025 fiscal year. Revenue is unfortunately expected to drop. And profitability looks set to fall precipitously. This has also gone into my decision to downgrade the stock at this moment. Not bad, but not great Since 1980, NVR, Inc has been operating as a homebuilder in the US. From its humble origins in Virginia that year, the firm has expanded to become one of the largest homeb...
