Analysts are mixed on the house that Warren Buffett built: Berkshire Hathaway. Analysts are mixed on the house that Warren Buffett built: Berkshire Hathaway. It is not very often that Wall Street analysts are ambivalent, let alone bearish, toward the house that Warren Buffett built, Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A 1.85%) (BRK.B 1.73%). Over the past 60 years, with Buffett at the helm, Berkshire Hathaway has been one of the most reliable, best-performing stocks you can buy. In that time, the stock has beaten the S&P 500 (^GSPC +0.41%) in just about every time period you can imagine -- including five years, 10 years, 20 years, 30 years ... even 40 years. And over the past 20 years, there were only three years when Berkshire Hathaway stock had a negative calendar-year return -- 2015, 2011, and 2008. But if you look at the stock's analyst ratings right now, their views are mixed on Berkshire Hathaway. Among the analysts covering it, 57% rate it a hold, 29% a buy, and 14% a sell. The median price target for the B shares is $481 per share, which is basically where it's at now -- suggesting a flat return over the next 12 months. In many respects, it's pretty surprising, but then again, the company is in the midst of a major transition, as Buffett retired in January and Greg Abel became the new CEO. Here's why this matters to investors. Berkshire Hathaway in transition Berkshire Hathaway stock is down about 4% year to date and is coming off a year when it returned 10% and trailed the S&P 500's performance. Quite simply, the Buffett premium that investors baked into their expectations, based on his track record, is probably not there for most investors with Abel at the helm, at least not yet. I think this is a bit overblown -- i...

A flurry of hybrid bond sales at the start of the year in Europe is masking investor nerves over a record low premium for this kind of risky debt. More than €9.5 billion ($11.4 billion) of such notes have been sold so far this year, the most since 2013, data compiled by Bloomberg show. A relentless rally across credit has driven down their spread over senior bonds to 62 basis points, less than half the past decade’s average, according to ICE BofA index data. “I have passed on quite a few of the deals for that reason and we are underweight corporate hybrids in our total return funds,” said Alex Temple , a portfolio manager at Allspring Global Investments. The pricing has led demand to wobble on recent transactions as buyers have second thoughts about the minimal premium they are being paid. Signs of a rebellion came in Italian energy company Terna - Rete Elettrica Nazionale SpA ’s sale this week, where final orders plunged to €1.9 billion from a €7.3 billion peak after pricing was ratcheted down to 3.875% from around 4.5%. “I was in the books for the Terna deal but had a 4% floor,” said Temple. “I am trying to stay disciplined on deals.” Orders also dropped in Tuesday’s sale by real estate company Aroundtown SA at 5.625%, where the books ended at €2 billion from above €2.9 billion when initial discussions offered up to 6.125%. That followed a similar pattern in deals last week for Stedin Holding NV and Heimstaden Bostad AB. “It is a good mix of issuers but there has not been much in the way of concessions,” said Julian Marks , head of corporate hybrid bonds at Nomura Asset Management. “We are being selective about the deals we participate in.” There’s no sign of any slowdown in issuance yet. Hybrid bonds have taken off around the world after a move by Moody’s Ratings to shift its criteria to boost the equity content of these notes in the US, categorizing them as half equity. Borrowers can use hybrids to raise money without diluting their shareholders or hurting their...

Kim Long, BYD to build EV battery plant in Vietnam. Vietnam’s Kim Long Motor announced that it has partnered with Chinese automaker BYD Auto to build a new electric vehicle (EV) battery plant in Vietnam. The facility will be built within Kim Long’s main production hub in Huế city, with an initial production capacity of 3 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of batteries per year for commercial vehicles produced by Kim Long. The Vietnamese automaker confirmed that as part of the deal with BYD, a second phase of construction will expand the plant’s production capacity to 6 GWh per year, to supply batteries for passenger cars. The company has earmarked an investment of US$ 130 million for the two phases of construction. Kim Long is expected to fund the construction of the plant, while BYD will provide “full technological support” for the project. The partnership is expected to allow Kim Long to gradually develop the skills to become an EV battery manufacturer, from design and manufacturing to quality management capabilities, to ensure its future EVs are competitive and have high levels of safety. Kim Long expects the battery plant will allow it to achieve a local content ratio of over 80% in its EVs, and to establish a regional-scale vehicle production operation.

Technically, the tariffs shouldn't do anything at all to this coin. When President Trump imposed tariffs on foreign goods imported into the U.S., the resulting chaos sent many assets in the same downward direction. But this behavior of the market doesn't really make sense across the board. After all, cryptocurrencies like Ethereum (ETH +3.56%) aren't U.S. retailers whatsoever, nor are they directly exposed to the health of U.S consumers, and obviously they aren't U.S. exporters, so the link between new tariffs and their economic health (as well as their price performance) is indirect at best. But could the tariffs be dampening sentiment enough to overwhelm the positive and real impacts of Ethereum's ever-improving blockchain technology? Let's dive in. This coin is perpetually suffering from a volatile macro environment Given that tariffs are taxes on imported goods which are paid by the end consumers of those goods, in practice they can lift input costs at the same time as consumer prices. Ethereum isn't consumer facing, but it's still not insulated from those dynamics. The coin still tends to ride the waves of global risk appetite, macro sentiment, liquidity, and policy uncertainty. Tariffs throw all of those factors into disarray, and not for the better for risk assets like Ethereum. So it's pretty clear that the tariffs aren't raining on this coin's parade too much, even if they're making it more volatile. Of course, new tariff scares could still trigger broader risk-off moves and dampen sentiment such that crypto is dragged downward along with stocks. The roadmap keeps delivering The main reason that Ethereum is continuing to g...
