The US president’s clamp down on immigration and flouting of the rule of law in Minnesota is entrenching long-established reserves of solidarity • Don’t already get The Long Wave in your inbox? Sign up here Hello and welcome to The Long Wave. This week, distressing scenes continue to unfold on the streets of Minneapolis, as confrontations between US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and protesters intensify. Behind the headlines, there are communities, in the US and beyond, for whom this is a generationally traumatic moment. I spoke to Somali experts and activists across the diaspora, in Mogadishu, and in the state of Minnesota, which has the largest Somali community in the US. The picture that emerged was of anxiety but also solid resolve. For almost all of his second term, Donald Trump has been fixated on Somali Americans, making derogatory comments about both them and Somalia, linking his opinion of them to justify anti-immigration policies in general, but particularly in Minnesota, a state that is home to more than 100,000 people of Somali descent. He appears to be particularly personally exercised by Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar, who is of Somali origin, and who has exchanged barbs with him, taking his revenge on her entire demographic. So deep is his hatred that when Omar was attacked this week by a man who sprayed her with an unknown substance, Trump responded by calling her a fraud who “probably had herself sprayed”. But the broad reason for picking on the Somali community, according to Prof Idil Abdi Osman, at Leicester University, is that it is convenient. The shift towards the right in Europe and the US, she told me, constitutes a “political thunderstorm” that “Somalis have become absorbed in” because “they become an embodiment of the kind of communities that Trump can easily target and use as a scapegoat – that is convenient for the populist narrative”. Corning and Meta Platforms have signed a multi-year agreement worth up to $6bn to accelerate data centre development in the US. As part of the deal, Corning will provide optical fibre, cable, and connectivity products to support Meta’s applications and artificial intelligence (AI) efforts. The supply arrangement will see Corning expand production capabilities at its sites in North Carolina, with a notable increase in capacity at its Hickory optical cable facility, where Meta will act as the anchor customer. The contract is set to facilitate Meta’s plans to construct data centres across the country using domestically manufactured technology. Corning expects the expanded operations to boost projected employment in North Carolina by 15% to 20%, maintaining a workforce exceeding 5,000 in the state. Many of these roles are linked to large-scale fibre and cable manufacturing plants. Corning chairman and CEO Wendell Weeks said: “This long-term partnership with Meta reflects Corning’s commitment to develop, innovate, and manufacture the critical technologies that power next-generation data centres here in the US. The Good Brigade/DigitalVision via Getty Images Investment summary My recommendation for RPM International Inc. ( RPM ) is a neutral rating. While I see early signs that growth could inflect (from data centers and semiconductor facilities demand) and normalization of project timelines, these positives are being offset by weakness in CG, limited pricing power, and operating deleverage from fixed costs. Until there is clarity on the volume growth, I think it is better to stay on the sidelines. Business Overview RPM is a producer and marketer of specialty chemicals and building materials. The Construction Products Group [CPG] segment provides roofing systems, building envelope solutions, and construction sealants. The Performance Coatings Group [PCG] segment specializes in high-performance flooring, corrosion control coatings, and fireproofing products for industrial and infrastructure markets. Lastly, the Consumer Group [CG] produces DIY specialty paints, caulks, and sealants under brand names like Rust-Oleum and DAP. Will growth start to inflect? There are two reasons to believe that RPM's growth will start to inflect in the coming quarter. The first is that demand is increasingly coming from higher-value projects, particularly in data centers and semiconductor manufacturing. Demand for these is driven by the aggressive demand for AI, which I expect to continue for a long while as nations and organizations race to achieve AI superiority. Unlike a typical commercial building, data centers and semiconductor fabs are mission-critical facilities. Everything must be foolproof with no margin for error, as any downtime would lead to huge losses . The consequence down the line could be catastrophic as well (imagine Microsoft and Google's cloud service going down for 2 hours). For RPM, it is able to capitalize on the demand trend here because of its exposure to roofing and flooring systems. Given that these are the "shell" of the facility, they are generally specified early (...

TLDR Amazon mistakenly emailed AWS employees about layoffs scheduled for Wednesday, revealing plans before official announcement The error exposed “Project Dawn,” Amazon’s internal code name for cutting approximately 30,000 corporate positions AWS senior VP Colleen Aubrey’s premature message was quickly recalled after being sent Tuesday evening Job cuts will affect AWS, retail, Prime Video and HR teams following 14,000 layoffs in October CEO Andy Jassy attributes cuts to AI adoption and efforts to eliminate management bureaucracy Amazon’s cloud division learned about impending layoffs the hard way Tuesday. An accidental email spilled the beans about job cuts planned for Wednesday morning. Amazon.com, Inc., AMZN The message came from Colleen Aubrey, a senior vice president in Amazon Web Services. She told employees that affected workers had already been informed. They hadn’t been. The email referenced “Project Dawn,” Amazon’s internal name for the layoffs. A scheduled team meeting was canceled almost immediately after the message went out. AWS employees shared screenshots in Slack channels. “These decisions are difficult and are made thoughtfully as we position our organization and AWS for future success,” Aubrey wrote. Amazon hasn’t responded to requests for comment about the mishap. The premature notification reveals a much larger story. Amazon is preparing to cut roughly 30,000 corporate positions across the company. Multiple Divisions Face Job Eliminations The layoffs won’t stop at AWS. Prime Video, retail operations and human resources will all see cuts this week. Amazon already eliminated 14,000 jobs in October. Those cuts were just the beginning of this broader reduction plan. The full 30,000 positions represent nearly 10% of Amazon’s corporate workforce. CEO Andy Jassy outlined the strategy behind the cuts last year. He wants fewer management layers and less bureaucracy. He also said artificial intelligence would naturally reduce the need for corporate staff....

Intel jumps amid report it will play a role in manufacturing Nvidia GPUs in 2028, CFO purchases $250,000 in company stock Intel is surging this morning amid one confirmed vote of executive suite confidence in the company and a rumored one that could be much more significant. Starting with the latter, Taiwanese industry outlet DigiTimes reports that Intel will play a role in Nvidia GPUs for the Feynman generation, the successor to the upcoming Vera Rubin generation, which is expected to be released in 2028. Specifically, the report says that Nvidia will “partially utilize” Intel for the I/O die, or the part of the module that facilitates communication, as well as for about 25% of packaging. The remainder would be handled by TSMC, which is also slated to retain its role in manufacturing the Feynman architecture’s brains. In September, Nvidia announced a $5 billion investment in Intel as part of a pact to develop data center and PC products. This report, if confirmed, would make a significant enhancement of this partnership. And as for the support from inside the house: a filing released after the close on Tuesday showed that Intel Chief Financial Officer David Zinsner bought nearly $250,000 in company stock on Monday. That purchase came as shares tumbled more than 20% after management issued guidance for Q1 that came in below Wall Street’s view.

Rubio braces for Senate scrutiny over Venezuela toggle caption Jose Luis Magana/AP Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to testify Wednesday before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, where he will defend the U.S. military operation that ousted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and outline Washington's strategy moving forward. In prepared remarks, Rubio pushes back on claims that the U.S. is at war with Venezuela. "There is no war against Venezuela, and we did not occupy a country. There are no U.S. troops on the ground," framing the mission as a targeted law enforcement action rather than a military occupation. Rubio says the U.S. will help Venezuela transition from what he calls a "criminal state" into a responsible international partner and is closely monitoring the former vice president, now interim leader Delcy Rodríguez, who has pledged to open Venezuela's energy sector to American companies. Sponsor Message But Rubio also signals a hard line if cooperation breaks down. "Make no mistake, as the President has stated, we are prepared to use force to ensure maximum cooperation if other methods fail," Rubio says. Democrats are expected to challenge the legality, cost, and fallout of the operation. In her prepared remarks ranking committee member Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., acknowledges Maduro's record but questions the decision, writing: "Nicolás Maduro was bad for Venezuela, for the region and for the United States. The question is, was the raid to arrest him worth it?" Shaheen also criticizes the ongoing U.S. naval blockade, saying it is costing American taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars. The hearing marks Rubio's highest-profile test yet on Venezuela policy, as lawmakers press for clarity on the long-term U.S. strategy in the region. This is a developing story and will be updated.
