Leaders say automated mowers’ blades threaten nocturnal animals as studies highlight risks to wildlife German mayors have called for a nationwide ban on night-time use of robot lawnmowers to protect hedgehogs and other small nocturnal animals from being killed or maimed in the dark. Recent studies have highlighted the threat lawnmower blades pose to wildlife active between dusk and dawn, prompting growing calls for regulation. Hedgehogs also tend to curl into a ball when threatened rather than running away, making them harder for a robot mower’s sensors to detect. Continue reading...

Hormuz Sees 15 Ships Transit In 24 Hours As Two Tankers With Qatari LNG Make Sudden U-Turn President Trump on Sunday warned Tehran to " Open the Strait " and make a deal by the end of Tuesday, or the U.S. military would "blow everything up" and "take over the oil." Meanwhile, Iran rejected Trump's ultimatum to reopen the Hormuz chokepoint, saying it would only reopen the critical waterway once damage from the war is compensated. There was some good news overnight after Iran's semi-official Fars News Agency reported that 15 vessels had passed through the Hormuz chokepoint over the last 24 hours. Still, that remains only a tiny fraction of pre-conflict tanker traffic. Separately, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy warned that the waterway will "never return to its previous condition," particularly for the U.S. and Israeli-linked vessels, and added that it is completing preparations to enforce a new security order across the Persian Gulf. The question some military analysts are likely asking about the IRGCN's statement is: with what naval fleet? Still, the IRGCN's asymmetric warfare around Hormuz can be enforced with suicide drones, naval mines, and missiles. Map: Tanker Tarffic Hormuz In a separate report, Bloomberg's Stephen Stapczynski tracked two LNG tankers, Al Daayen and Rasheeda, loaded in Qatar that appeared to be traversing part of the Hormuz waterway. However, Stapczynski noted early Monday that the two tankers appeared to "pause [their] attempt to exit Hormuz." There was no indication why both tankers abruptly turned around. "The ships have now slowed and pulled back slightly after earlier heading eastward toward the Hormuz opening. It isn’t immediately clear at this stage if the tankers will abandon the journey," he said. AlexSecret/iStock via Getty Images The S&P 500 ( SPX ) recovered during the Good Friday holiday-shortened trading week. The index closed at 6,582.69 on Thursday, 2 April 2026, up nearly 3.4% from its previous trading week's close. Given that the week featured news of higher oil and fuel prices, which has been a catalyst for falling stock prices in recent weeks, that outcome seems paradoxical. When you add a surprisingly strong jobs report into the mix, it would seem certain the Federal Reserve would be more likely to hike interest rates in upcoming months. After all, the fear of the Fed raising interest rates to fight inflation from the Iran war surge of oil prices has been front and center in financial news headlines in shaping investor expectations of the future. But the week saw something different with the actual expectations for how the Fed would be setting interest rates through the end of 2026. The CME Group's FedWatch Tool foresees no interest rate changes through the end of 2026, with a much lower probability of any rate hike taking place. The FedWatch tool even sees a growing chance for a quarter-point rate cut in 2027, with the most likely timing of that change coming near the end of 2027-Q3. What's going on is that the oil price surge is now raising the potential of a recessionary contraction in the U.S. economy, which increased after President Trump's mid-week speech boosted the prospect the Iran war would intensify in the near term rather than come to a resolution as had previously been expected. The heightened risk of contraction would forestall the Fed from hiking rates in 2026 and would support the S&P 500 holding onto its gains during the week in the absence of additional information for how that would affect the various parts of the U.S. economy. The latest update of the alternative futures chart shows the rebound: As the geopolitical event progresses, we're likely to continue seeing an elaborate dance between investor expectations for inflationar...

Scene from The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Source: Universal Pictures Mixed reviews didn't dissuade mass audiences from buying tickets to the "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie," which scored the biggest opening of the year for a Hollywood movie. The Illumination and Nintendo co-production earned $130.9 million over the weekend and a massive $190.1 million in its first five days in North American theaters, according to studio estimates Sunday. Universal Pictures released the sequel globally on Wednesday, capitalizing on kids' spring break vacations in the week leading up to the Easter holiday. With an estimated $182.4 million from 80 overseas markets, the film is looking at an astronomical $372.5 million debut — the latest hit for the PG rating. Mexico is leading the international bunch with $29.1 million from 5,136 screens, followed by the U.K. and Ireland with $19.7 million. The animated sequel, Illumination CEO Christopher Meledandri's 16th movie in 16 years, is the industry's biggest debut since "Avatar: Fire and Ash" launched over Christmas. The Chinese movie "Pegasus 3," which was not a Motion Picture Association release, has the slight edge for the 2026 global record, however. It's also a dip from the first film, which opened to $204 million domestically during the same five-day time frame in 2023 ($147 of that was from Friday, Saturday and Sunday). "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" went on to be the second biggest movie of 2023, with over $1.3 billion in box office receipts. "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie," which features returning voice actors Chris Pratt, Jack Black, Anya Taylor-Joy and Charlie Day, had a massive footprint in the U.S. and Canada, where it played in 4,252 theaters, including 421 IMAX and 1,345 premium large format screens. It made $15 million from the IMAX screens alone. "It's exactly the kind of broad, crowd-pleasing release that brings people into theatres," AMC Chairman and CEO Adam Aron said in a statement. It also cost around $110 million to make,...
