EschCollection/DigitalVision via Getty Images I have been covering Gatekeeper Systems ( GSI:CA ) ( GKPRF ) on Seeking Alpha since summer 2024 , when I first issued a bullish call on the stock in light of Gatekeeper's strong position in what was about to become a big market: upgrading passenger train locomotives with crash-hardened memory modules, as required by a Federal Railroad Administration [FRA] mandate. Basically, the federal government ruled that all locomotives of passenger trains must have security cameras by October, 2027. This should be easy to understand: planes have "black boxes" to help with post-mortem analysis after a crash, and this legislation just requires the same thing for trains. Since there are relatively few companies actively engaged in this market, and Gatekeeper has already installed these units for trains in Philadelphia's SEPTA system, they have been poised to capture an outsized portion of this ~$300m (according to the company) opportunity : FRA Opportunity (GSI Investor Presentation) Shares went up about 600% last year as the first deals started to get announced, and Gatekeeper won a big one: Long Island Railroad [LIRR], for 27m CAD. Shares broke 2 USD last fall in the aftermath of that deal. Shortly after the results were announced, I sized up Gatekeeper's prospects in another article , urging readers to stay cautious, since: the LIRR contract is just one data point, and we really still do not know how many more contracts Gatekeeper will win. There is very little visibility here, and Gatekeeper's management has not provided any form of clear guidance. 2026 News: Not Much So Far! In the five months since that article appeared, shares have fallen by about half. According to my internet research, no other company has announced winning a contract for FRA security-camera/memory-module installations in a major metropolitan rail system. But then again, Gatekeeper has not had any major wins, either. This in itself is not a reason to buy or se...

U.S. stocks are on the verge of erasing losses sparked by the Iran war, with investors increasingly betting the geopolitical shock will prove short-lived. Oil markets remain far more cautious. A two-week ceasefire announced Tuesday night has helped fuel the recovery in stocks, triggering a relief rally that has helped push shares to recoup more than two-thirds of their losses since fighting began in late February. The S & P 500 is now less than 1% below its pre-war level of 6,878.88. Meanwhile, crude prices remain elevated amid lingering supply concerns tied to Middle East supply bottlenecks. .SPX YTD mountain S & P 500 year to date "Stocks look somewhat more hopeful of a happy ending than oil, with equity indices now outperforming the pull-back seen in oil futures," Barclays strategists said in a note to clients. The rebound has been driven in part by a "powerful short squeeze," as bearish bets were unwound into the rally, the British bank said. Investors have also grown more confident that President Donald Trump will seek an off-ramp and avoid prolonged economic damage, the firm noted. "Further de-escalation remains the most rational outcome, in our view, as Trump needs an off-ramp given mounting political and economic costs of the war," Barclays said. Strategists at Citigroup echoed those views, saying the Tuesday ceasefire has shifted sentiment. "While there remain many unknowns, the fact that the U.S. and Iran have found an off-ramp is positive," Citi wrote. "Clearly, it will not be a straight line to a deal. Investors have reduced risk very significantly and may be pulled back into adding risk if the ceasefire remains mostly on track. This suggests that the rally may have legs." Oil markets, by contrast, continue to price in a more cautious scenario amid persistent tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, with the vital shipping lane still largely closed. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures for May delivery traded near $100 per barrel Friday — versus about...

wen ya/E+ via Getty Images Gold has been on a wild ride in the first three-plus months of 2026. The yellow metal topped out in January, then corrected 20% as the conflict in Iran heated up. That also meant volatility in shares of gold-mining companies. Some have done better than others, but with gold now solidly below $5,000 per ounce, investors must sift the winners from the losers. I had a buy rating on SSR Mining ( SSRM ) back in November . The stock is up 48% since then, outperforming the S&P 500 by about the same amount. Today, despite gold remaining far below its peak, I reiterate a buy rating. SSR’s valuation remains compelling (as EPS estimates have risen), while its price recently put in a new record—but the technicals bear watching. SSR: Outperforming Gold & Global Stocks YoY Stockcharts.com Back in February, SSR reported a solid set of quarterly results. Q4 non-GAAP EPS of $0.88 topped the Wall Street consensus forecast of $0.57, while revenue of $522 million, up 61% from the same period a year earlier, was a material $69 million beat. The company issued record gold-equivalent ounces guidance for FY 2026, while the Board of Directors approved the reintroduction of a $300 million stock buyback plan. Shares rallied just 2.6% in the session that followed—the smallest post-earnings move back to May of 2024. Looking ahead to the May 5 Q1 release, the options market prices in a high 9.0% earnings-related stock price swing based on the at-the-money straddle expiring soonest after the report. Implied volatility is very high on the $7.2 billion Gold industry company within the Materials sector. Looking back on the quarter that was, SSR reported big numbers, hurdling analyst expectations with EBITDA of $255 million and adjusted EPS of $0.88. The company strengthened its balance sheet , ending the year with $305 million in net cash, which perhaps prompted its Board to re-authorize the aforementioned share buyback program. Overall, operating cash flow for the quarter...
