The Chinese carmaker Chery is launching a fourth brand in the UK, continuing a push into the British market where it has rapidly become a major player. The state-owned company said on Wednesday that it would sell cars under the Lepas brand, which is developing battery and hybrid SUVs aimed at younger families, mainly in the European market. The decision to add a fourth brand in the UK underlines Chery’s efforts to win market share. The Lepas cars will initially be built in China and imported to the UK, which does not have the tariffs imposed by the US and EU, but the government is hopeful it will eventually decide to manufacture cars in Britain. Jaguar Land Rover, Britain’s largest automotive employer, is in early-stage discussions over a potential deal to use its factories to make Chery cars, but no agreement has been announced. The new brand launch comes a week after Chery said it would open a research and development headquarters in Liverpool for commercial vehicles. Chery has been the largest exporter of cars from China for 23 years, but it did not make significant inroads in Europe because it focused on cheaper models for other regions such as the Middle East. The rise of electric cars and heavy government subsidies for Chinese manufacturers, however, have allowed companies such as Chery, BYD and the MG owner SAIC to take on European and Japanese carmakers. Chery launched its Omoda brand in 2024, Jaecoo in January 2025 and its eponymous brand last summer. It sold 53,600 of those cars in 2025, or 2.7% of the market. That meant it outdid BYD, Tesla and German-owned Mini, and easily outsold Japanese rivals such as Honda and Mazda. Chery has not yet committed to manufacturing in the UK, but it has indicated that is is considering doing so. It’s UK director, Victor Zhang, said in June it was actively considering building a UK plant as part of a “localisation” strategy. The company has repeatedly said it wants to pursue an “in UK, for UK, be UK” strategy, suggesting ...

Ant DM/iStock Editorial via Getty Images It has been three months since my previous coverage of Shake Shack Inc. ( SHAK ). And the way I see it, the market remains cautious about it, which should not be surprising in a volatile environment. Yet, it makes SHAK even more attractive with its cheap valuation, supported by its robust performance and strategic expansion. There are also some external aspects that can help it sustain its business. Technicals are weak, but buying opportunities are present. SHAK Q4 2025: A Brief Update Shake Shack, Inc. closed the year with robust results based on its preliminary report. While we only saw the tip of the iceberg, I believe that it was enough to undermine its operational strength. In Q4 2025, its operating revenue amounted to $400.5M , up by 21.8% YoY from $328.7M. This revenue growth was also stronger than in my previous coverage at 16%, which tells us that SHAK has no indication of slowing down yet. More interestingly, its revenues have consistently increased for 12 consecutive quarters , which should not be surprising amid its sustained expansion. Now, one may be wondering if SHAK’s expansion was really fruitful. At the end of 2024, SHAK has already 579 systemwide restaurants. At the end of 2025, it has opened 85 restaurants, 45 were company-operated, while 40 were licensed. SHAK has not yet disclosed its systemwide sales, so we will focus on its company-operated restaurants. If we look at its revenues per restaurant. In 2024, it had 329 restaurants. In 2025, it opened 45, so I estimate the total number of company-operated restaurants at 374 units. If we look at its revenue per unit, that will be total revenue less licensing revenue. On average, SHAK generated $1.03M in revenue per restaurant versus $962,407 YoY. This means that its expansion remained fruitful and productive. You can look at the table for better representation. Aside from that same-shack sales rose by 2.1% YoY, so its comparable restaurants really derived mo...

March E-mini S&P futures (ESH26) are up +0.08%, and March E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQH26) are down -0.60%. Stock indexes are wavering today on some mixed corporate earnings results and rotation out of technology stocks. Super Micro Computer is up more than +15% after forecasting Q3 net sales well above expectations. However, Advanced Micro Devices is down more than -13% after analysts said the company's Q1 sales forecast was seen as weak. Data service and software stocks are also falling for a second day today following the release of an automation tool for lawyers by artificial intelligence firm Anthropic. Stocks were also pressured by signs of weakness in the US labor market, after the Jan ADP employment change rose by +22,000, below expectations of +45,000. Market sentiment improved today, following the end of the partial US government shutdown after President Trump late Tuesday signed a deal to fund the government. The funding package only funds the Department of Homeland Security through February 13, while the rest of the government is funded through September 30, the end of the fiscal year. The Treasury today announced that next week's quarterly refunding will total $125 billion in sales of T-notes and T-bonds, right on expectations, and said it anticipates keeping auction sizes unchanged for nominal notes, bonds, and floating-rate notes "for at least the next several quarters." US MBA mortgage applications fell -8.9% in the week ended January 30, with the purchase mortgage sub-index down -14.4% and the refinancing sub-index down -4.7%. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage fell -3 bp to 6.21% from 6.24% in the prior week. The markets this week will focus on earnings, economic news, and the passage of a spending bill to end the partial government shutdown. Later today, the Jan ISM services index i...

‘The girls wait for two or three hours to be introduced. The reason they’re sitting on the ground is because there weren’t any chairs in the waiting room’ My new book Social Season opens with a poem set in the mid-1800s, a time that marked the beginning of a period of increased financial prosperity for some African Americans. Cotillion dances have European origins, but in the poem, Black New Yorkers perform classic dances such as waltzes and quadrilles and are dressed in fine outfits. These Black debutante balls go back a long way, and are one example of African Americans trying to create a better life. Today, they continue to introduce young women into society and retain a strong emphasis on the participants’ education. Initially, I had been working towards creating a book with a larger overview of Black subcultures in general. I’d photographed cheerleaders, churches, traditional rodeos and other intergenerational community gatherings. I wanted to include a debutante ball in a post-industrial city, and Detroit has a very rich Black history. When I first reached out to the city’s Cotillion Society, I only planned to attend one year’s event. But after that evening in 2022, I realised this was a project in itself and that I was really going to have to work for the images I wanted. Continue reading...

European security officials believe two Russian space vehicles have intercepted the communications of at least a dozen key satellites over the continent. Officials believe that the likely interceptions, which have not previously been reported, risk not only compromising sensitive information transmitted by the satellites but could also allow Moscow to manipulate their trajectories or even crash them. Russian space vehicles have shadowed European satellites more intensively over the past three years, at a time of high tension between the Kremlin and the West following Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Visit Benzinga to get more great content like this. Retirement, ideally a period of relaxation and enjoyment after years of hard work, is often envisioned as a time to pursue hobbies, travel or simply unwind. Finding a fiduciary financial advisor doesn’t have to be hard. SmartAsset’s free tool matches you with up to 3 financial advisors that serve your area in minutes. But for many, this phase of life is marred by financial worries, transforming what should be a golden era into a source of dread. A recent study from Zety sheds light on this growing concern, revealing that 40% of Americans fear retirement more than death, primarily because of financial insecurities. This fear is more acute among married couples, who face the added complexity of planning for two people with varying financial needs. A NerdWallet study, using the 2022 Survey of Consumer Finances, underscores this challenge, indicating that 60% of Americans lack a retirement-specific account. The disparity in average household retirement savings by age group further illustrates this issue: Under 35: $49,130 (median: $18,880) Ages 35 to 44: $141,520 (median: $45,000) Ages 45 to 54: $313,220 (median: $115,000) Ages 55 to 64: $537,560 (median: $185,000) Ages 65 to 74: $609,230 (median: $200,000) These figures show a significant gap between the average and median savings, pointing to a broad spectrum of financial preparedness across different age groups. These figures highlight significant growth in net worth across all age groups from 2019 to 2022, with the largest increases seen in younger families under 35, although they remain the least wealthy overall. In contrast, those in the 65-74 age range hold the highest average net worth. To guide couples in their retirement planning, T. Rowe Price provides savings benchmarks as multiples of income, varying by h...

Richard Drury/DigitalVision via Getty Images Market Overview Risk assets in general capped off a strong year with a solid fourth quarter. In contrast with recent trends, non-US equity markets led the way in 2025. While the threats to market stability that have prevailed throughout the year were undiminished during the quarter, investors continued to embrace risk. The S&P 500 Index gained 2.7% for the fourth quarter and 17.9% for the year, while the MSCI EAFE Index returned a respective 4.9% and 31.2%, Notably, 2025 was only the third year in the past 10 that the MSCI EAFE has outperformed the S&P 500. Gold, meanwhile, surged 65% during the year, its largest annual return since 1979.1 The US Double Bind Gets Tighter Despite ample motivation for conservatism in an environment of pronounced macro, financial, geopolitical and structural concerns, risk perception in US markets remains low pretty much wherever you look. Equity market valuation multiples are rich, high yield spreads are tight and implied volatility is low.2 While the post-pandemic normalization of certain macro factors has been encouraging, the country’s fiscal settings remain far off-kilter. The US federal deficit remains historically outsized relative to the unemployment rate—as it has since the outbreak of Covid-19.3 Normally, high unemployment rates and recession beget large fiscal deficits, as lower tax revenues combine with increased government spending. Conversely, low unemployment rates and robust economic growth typically support higher tax revenues and tighter fiscal policy, causing deficits to contract or even turn into surpluses. If the economy were in balance, we’d expect budget deficits of around 2% of GDP—not the 5.8% at the end of fiscal year 2025.4 We believe this persistent deficit spending helps explain the decoupling of gold and Treasuries seen in recent years. The price of gold surged 65% during 2025—its largest annual gain since 1979—and has more than doubled over the past two years i...

Michael Ely knew from the first moment he met James Allan Taylor that he had found someone special. The pair had separately hitchhiked to a gay bar, with fake IDs, in Sunset Beach, California. They connected, they danced and stepped outside for a kiss in the thick fog. “I was only 18 but I knew I had just met my soulmate,” says Ely. The pair remained a couple until 2015 when Taylor, who was nicknamed Spider, died from liver cancer. A new collection of Taylor’s music, Surge Studio Music – electronic pieces he composed for gay porn films – has just been released. “I was like: wait, there’s a fanbase for 80s gay porn music?” laughs Ely. “I had no idea. When Josh contacted me, I found the cassette tapes in a box in the back of the closet. They’d been there for ever.” Josh Cheon runs Dark Entries, a San Francisco-based record label that focuses on celebrating overlooked gay artists, including many who died from Aids-related illnesses, and releasing their lesser-known forays into the world of soundtracking gay porn. As well as Taylor’s Surge Studio Music material, there have been releases by the Hi-NRG and disco pioneer Patrick Cowley and the electro innovator Man Parrish, and the compilation Deep Entries: Gay Electronic Excursions 1979-1985, described as “10 tracks of obscure queer synth bliss”. “This had been on my docket since day one of the label,” Cheon says. “There were all these compilations of people doing rare Australian synth pop or Japanese new wave but I’m like: ‘What about gay? Where’s the gay voice in all of this? It’s all been erased, forgotten, lost to Aids or thrown out.’ So I’ve literally been working on this for 16 years trying to amplify this underground gay music scene.” The proceeds from many of the releases get donated to Aids charities but it’s also an opportunity to direct some money towards artists who maybe weren’t all that business savvy when they first took on the scoring work. “Man Parrish was like: oh, I think I got $50 and a blowjob,” laugh...

Having a few soup recipes in your back pocket is an affordable and easy way to up your vegetable intake. The Guardian’s journalism is independent. However, homemade soups can be time-consuming to make – what with having to saute the veg, stand over the pan as you add liquid and simmer, before you finally blend into the finished soup. Not so with a snazzy soup maker, which will handle much of that faff with the press of a single button. And most of them take less than half an hour to run the programme from start to finish. So, if healthy home-cooked lunches and dinners are on the cards for 2026, a soup-making machine could be a useful investment. I’ve spent months testing a range of the best soup makers to find out if they’re worth it, and I can attest that most of them are – particularly when you consider that some models start at £30.
