Duhan van der Merwe and Darcy Graham - the top two try-scorers in Scotland history - as well as British and Irish Lions Test full-back Blair Kinghorn have been left out of the side for the Six Nations opener against Italy. Coach Gregor Townsend has opted for a back three of Bristol's Tom Jordan at full-back flanked by Glasgow Warriors wingers Kyle Steyn and Jamie Dobie for Saturday's game in Rome. Graham is among the replacements but Van der Merwe and Kinghorn are not even in the matchday 23, with stand-off Adam Hastings and scrum-half George Horne the other backs cover. Other than the shock omissions of three 2025 Lions tourists, Townsend's selection for Scotland's first game of the championship is otherwise predictable. Grant Gilchrist, 35, has beaten off the challenges of the more youthful Gregor Brown and Max Williamson to partner Scott Cummings in the second row. Matt Fagerson, Rory Darge and Jack Dempsey form the back row, with versatile Glasgow forward Brown also covering the breakaway unit. Ewan Ashman gets the nod at hooker ahead of George Turner and will have Lions props Pierre Schoeman and Zander Fagerson either side of him. Ben White partners vice-captain Finn Russell at half-back despite strong claims from in-form Horne while the midfield is the familiar pairing of Huw Jones and Sione Tuipulotu, who will captain the side.

Lufthansa Technik Philipines and FedEx Corp. are investing more than $600 million for separate facilities in a former US air base in the Philippines as the Southeast Asian nation moves to boost foreign capital, according to a senior government official. Lufthansa Technik Philippines, a joint venture of Philippine firm MacroAsia Corp. and Lufthansa Technik , is planning to pour in $400 million to build a maintenance, repair and overhaul facility in Clark International Airport in Pampanga province, Joshua Bingcang, president and chief executive officer of the Bases Conversion and Development Authority, said in a briefing Thursday. The agency develops former military land into business hubs, revenues from which help fund military modernization. The Philippines, which is lagging its Southeast Asian neighbors in attracting foreign investments, is positioning itself as a hub for firms looking to expand and diversify their operations into the region. Foreign direct investments into the Philippines reached $9 billion in 2024, compared to between $11 billion and $24 billion for neighbors Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand, data from the Asean Investment Report show. Lufthansa Technik Philippines, which has an existing operation in the capital’s main airport, will build a facility in the next two to three years in a 15-hectare (37 acres) lot that can serve planes as large as a A380 jumbo aircraft, Bingcang said. Singapore Airlines Ltd.’s’ SIA Engineering and Metrojet Ltd. have MRO stations in Clark, a major aviation hub outside of the capital Manila. For its part, FedEx is expanding its current facility in Clark and will spend more than $200 million, Bingcang said. Korean Water Resources Corp. and Maynilad Water Services Inc. have also submitted a proposal to partner with Bases Conversion and Development Authority to provide water and wastewater services, he said. A spokesperson for Lufthansa Group declined to comment. Representatives for FedEx and Maynilad didn’t imme...
