In my travels around the world, I’m often asked if the best days of Hong Kong are behind us. My answer is always an emphatic “no” – and this is not merely a pep talk. When you step back and take a broad macroeconomic view, it becomes clear that, structurally speaking, our greatest opportunities lie just ahead. While many commentators scramble to draw parallels between Japan’s “lost decades” and Ch...
While many commentators scramble to draw parallels between Japan’s “lost decades” and China’s economic headwinds, they miss a far more apt and profound comparison: the phenomenon known as...

The source is the monthly current population survey (CPS) of households. The focus is on total hours worked regardless of whether the hours are from a single or multiple jobs. The Labor Department has been collecting this since 1968, a time when only 13.5% of US employees were part-timers. Over 55 years later, May's employment report showed that 17.6% of total employed workers were part time and 82.4% of total employed workers were full-time. Here is a visualization of the trend in the 21st century, with the percentage of full-time employed on the left axis and the part-time employed on the right. We see a noticeable crossover during the Great Recession when part-time work increased, and full-time work declined. Over the past few years, we have seen a similar crossover slowly form. The Impact of Recessions on Employment Let's zoom in a bit closer to see the impact of the Great Recession on employment. We’ve changed the start date of our next chart to the beginning of 2007. The reversal began in 2008, but it accelerated in the fall of that year following the September 15th bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers. In January 2010, shortly after the official end of the recession, part-time work peaked at 20.1% while full-time work reached an all-time low of 79.9%. Afterwards, the two cohorts slowly drifted apart, with full-time employment increasing. Interestingly, this trend continued even during the COVID global pandemic and recession. It was only until recently that we started to see a slight reversal in this trend, with full-time work slowly declining while part-time work is on the rise. In December 2023, full-time employment dropped below 83.0% of all employment while part-time employment rose above 17.0% and we have ...

The Federal Communications Commission has waived a requirement for Amazon to launch half of its satellite broadband constellation by the end of July, a key regulatory reprieve that buys the tech giant time to get more of its spacecraft into orbit. Amazon won regulatory approval for the Amazon Leo network in July 2020. The FCC's authorization came with two deadlines. First, Amazon had to launch half of its 3,232 satellites by July 30, 2026, in order to maintain authorization to launch the rest of the network. The regulator gave Amazon a deadline of July 30, 2029, to have all of its first-generation satellites in orbit. It has been apparent for some time that Amazon would not meet the FCC's requirement to launch half of its satellites —1,616 spacecraft —by the end of next month. Amazon filed an application in January requesting the FCC extend the deadline to July 2028 or waive it altogether. The commission decided on the latter option, removing any time limit for the 50 percent deployment milestone, but keeping the July 2029 deadline in place for the entire constellation. Saul Loeb | Afp | Getty Images President Donald Trump was loudly booed at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Monday night before the start of game three of the NBA Finals between the home team Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs. The boos were thunderous in the Garden when Trump was shown on the Jumbotron with Knicks owner James Dolan in a suite well above the court during the playing of the National Anthem. The boos turned to cheers when the Jumbotron's focus turned to Knicks star Jalen Brunson shown standing on the court. Trump's attendance at the game caused waits of two hours or more for ticket-holding fans to enter the famed arena in Midtown Manhattan after security screening. The president's motorcade passed signs that read "Nobody wants you here" and "Trump must go," as it moved from lower Manhattan up the FDR Drive and over to the Garden. Two other signs "Impeach. Convict. Remove." When the motorcade pulled up to the Garden, people standing along the street booed it, while others waved American flags.
