Yes, there is a hysteria that there will not be enough copper to physically connect what is likely to be a substantial increase in copper consumption to support AI and its associated data centers. But the truth is that while data centers use, per megawatt, about three times as much copper as traditional data centers, this new usage represents only a fraction of global demand. If we did not build a single AI data center, we would still need more copper! It is “electrification” that would be constrained by a lack of copper availability. Copper is essential to both alternative energy sources and global transportation solutions. Countries around the world are investing hundreds of billions in “grid” upgrades. New high-voltage transmission lines and new underground placement of today’s fire-prone surface transmission equipment require enormous amounts of copper for cabling. Large solar installations require something like 5 metric tonnes of copper per megawatt for cabling, transformers, and inverters. Offshore wind installations require 3 to 4 times that much! The US may have scaled back its rapid transition to electric vehicles, but global EV sales surpassed 20 million in 2025. This requires a massive network of home and public chargers, all of which rely on copper to get that power to where it needs to be. Adding these real future needs to the current industrial and construction industries’ baseline copper use yields a substantial increase. But many Wall Street firms touting AI are pushing a single narrative: that copper power cables, cooling plates, and the minuscule use of chip production are a bottleneck today. Brazil’s Suzano SA , one of the world’s top exporters of pulp, plans to keep production below full capacity through 2026 as a weakening US dollar hurts revenue, Chief Executive Officer Joao Alberto Abreu said. The company reports results in Brazilian reais, but most of its sales are done in US dollars and recent weakness for the greenback has held back sales figures. Abreu said the company is focusing on reducing costs and will keep its production roughly 3.5% lower than its total capacity through the end of 2026, after scaling back to those levels last year. “We have the obligation to understand the profitability and look at the business with a great level of detail,” Abreu said in an interview. Suzano saw its earnings before items such as interest and taxes fall 14% in the forth quarter of 2025 compared with a year earlier. The production move comes as Suzano and other pulp producers are trying to implement price increases after months of weakness, driven by depressed demand and tariff turmoil. Prices are still bellow historical levels, Chief Financial Officer Marcos Assumpção said, adding that the market conditions make it crucial for the company to “maintain discipline.”

Samsung Electronics Co. will unveil its latest mainstream Galaxy smartphones on Feb. 25 at an event in San Francisco, hoping to spur upgrades and fresh momentum in its rivalry with Apple Inc. ’s iPhone and Android-based competitors. The debut of the Galaxy S26 series will mark “a new phase in the era of AI as intelligence becomes truly personal and adaptive,” the company said Tuesday in a statement. The new handsets are expected to closely resemble the last several generations of the Galaxy S. By contrast, Apple recently touted record demand for its iPhone 17 series , which brought a substantial redesign to the high-end models and marked the introduction of an ultra-thin iPhone Air. Samsung beat Apple to market with the slim Galaxy S25 Edge last year, but it’s unclear whether an Edge sequel is on the agenda for the Unpacked event given limited sales. According to the leaked specs, the standard S26 will allegedly get a nominally larger battery — 4300mAh compared to 4000mAh — which is great news for the last “small” phone left standing. Once again, all three phones will lack built-in Qi2 magnets, outsourcing them to cases instead. Camera hardware looks to be much the same as last year, though the main and 5x telephoto lenses appear to have faster apertures. All things being equal, that would be a good thing for low-light photos.
