Oxford team’s technology picked up danger signs with 86% accuracy in study of 72,000 patients in England Oxford scientists have developed a simple AI tool that can predict the risk of heart failure five years before it develops. More than 60 million people worldwide have the condition in which the heart cannot pump blood around the body as well as it should. Spotting cases before they develop into heart failure would be a big step forward, experts say. Doctors could prepare better for and manage the condition at an earlier stage or even prevent it entirely. Continue reading...

Our seasoned traveller braved obstacles and mud to put the best cabin bags to the test – from hard-shell to budget, wheeled to lightweight • The best travel pillows, tested Let’s start by saying that if you can avoid taking a flight, that would be best. Aviation accounts for 2.5% of global carbon emissions – and the levels released by aircraft could double or triple by 2050 . Regrettably, you can’t always reach your destination by rail, sea or hot-air balloon . If flying is unavoidable, one way to reduce your carbon footprint is to take a cabin bag, rather than hold luggage. This encourages you to pack less, so your baggage is lighter, and less fuel is required to spirit it through the stratosphere. If that doesn’t move you, consider that you’ll also pay lower fees to the airline. Best cabin bag overall: July Carry On luggage Best budget cabin bag: Tripp Holiday 8 cabin suitcase Continue reading...

Ratana21/iStock via Getty Images Introduction This article helps in understanding that Solventum ( SOLV ) is a highly undervalued (see reasons below) stock specifically because the market is not getting clarity from the 3M post-spin, although it’s clear that its parts are highly valuable. Going through the sum-of-the-parts analysis, we can see the valuation at about $166.67 per share value. This versus a current share price of c.$63.00 gives us an upside of 164%. The bigger upside comes from my restructuring case, where if Solventum divests all its non-MedSurg parts and uses that raised cash to retire all net debts, and then uses the rest of the cash for a large tender buyback of shares. This is estimated to raise the share price up to $168.00 to $186.00 per share (this upside also considers the effect of operational restructuring margin improvement). Therefore, my opinion is a ‘strong buy’ on this stock. Company Overview Solventum is a healthcare company that was spun out of 3M on April 1, 2024. It now has three main business segments: MedSurg, Dental, and Health Information System, plus a smaller All Other / Water bucket as per Solventum’s 10K 2025 . According to Solventum’s 10K 2024 - Solventum has the following parts. MedSurg is the core business. It includes advanced wound care, infection prevention, surgical solutions, vascular access, medical tapes, and dressings. Dental includes a broad group of dental and orthodontic products. HIS is a software and services business focused on coding, clinical workflow, documentation, reimbursement, and value-based care. All Other includes the retained water business and some supply-agreement related items. As per Solventum’s 10K 2025 , MedSurg generated 4.817 billion of revenue and $810 million in segment operating income. Dental generated $1.349 billion of revenue and $346 million of operating income. HIS generated $1.360 billion of revenue and $496 million of operating income. All Other generated $302 million of revenue ...

Iran Gives Approved Hormuz Shippers "Few Seconds" To Submit Payment In Bitcoin Iran plans to require shipping companies to pay transit tolls in Bitcoin for vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, according to a Financial Times report . As Micah Zimmerman reports for BitcoinMagazine.com, this links bitcoin to one of the world’s most critical energy corridors and current events. The policy would apply to oil tankers seeking passage during a two-week ceasefire between Iran and the United States, announced after a shift in posture from Donald Trump. The arrangement aims to reopen a route that handles a large share of global oil flows while allowing Tehran to maintain control over access. According to statements attributed to Iranian officials, shipping firms would receive a payment request prior to transit. Once approved, vessels would be given a short window to complete the transaction in bitcoin. The structure reflects an attempt to bypass traditional financial rails that remain constrained by sanctions, while preserving a mechanism for enforcement over passage. As The FT details, Hamid Hosseini, a spokesperson for Iran’s Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Products Exporters’ Union, told the FT on Wednesday that Iran wanted to collect tolling fees from any tanker passing and to assess each ship. “Iran needs to monitor what goes in and out of the strait to ensure these two weeks aren’t used for transferring weapons,” said Hosseini, whose industry association works closely with the state. “Everything can pass through, but the procedure will take time for each vessel, and Iran is not in a rush,” he added. Decisions on the conditions for passing the strait are taken by Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. Hosseini’s remarks suggest Iran will require any tankers to use the northerly route close to its coastline, raising questions over whether western or Gulf state-linked vessels will be willing to risk transit. Hosseini said that each tanker must email authorities about...

Hiroshi Watanabe/DigitalVision via Getty Images The Eaton Vance Tax-Advantaged Global Dividend Opportunities Fund ( ETO ) is a closed-end fund that aims to provide its shareholders with a high level of total return. However, the fund might also be attractive to income-seeking investors as it boasts an attractive 7.63% yield at the current share price. This yield is substantially higher than that of nearly any equity index and even most fixed-income indices, so it might work reasonably well for anyone who is trying to use their investment portfolio as a source of income. In addition to this, the fund’s portfolio is much more heavily weighted towards equities than fixed-income, so the fund should be able to protect its shareholders against any decline in purchasing power that accompanies inflation. As regular readers are likely aware, I am quite concerned that inflation going forward will be much higher than what most of us have become accustomed to in our daily lives, so inflation protection tends to be something that I usually seek out when purchasing assets. However, we should note that this fund is rather heavily weighted towards the technology sector just like most other Eaton Vance closed-end funds. Investors who already have a lot of technology exposure should keep that in mind before deciding to initiate or add to a position in this fund. About The Eaton Vance Tax-Advantaged Global Dividend Opportunities Fund The website for the Eaton Vance Tax-Advantaged Global Dividend Opportunities Fund states that: The Fund invests primarily in global dividend-paying common and preferred stocks and seeks to distribute a high level of dividend income that qualifies for favorable federal income tax treatment. This description explicitly states that ETO invests in common equities and preferred equities. However, the fund actually has a sizable allocation to corporate bonds. The most recent portfolio holdings report is dated January 31, 2026. This document states that the fund...

pcruciatti/iStock Editorial via Getty Images V-Sports are becoming more popular in the U.S. In simple terms, V-Sports are computer-simulated sporting events that use advanced graphics and random number generation to replicate real sports competitions. The betting product allows players to place bets on simulated games that run continuously, often featuring realistic commentary, visual effects, and statistics. Notably, V-Sports provides betting opportunities 24/7 to help bridge downtime between live events and offer sportsbooks consistent engagement and revenue throughout the year. The betting products allow bookmakers to build in a set margin, so the total implied probabilities usually add up to more than 100%. Notably, the controllable nature of the margins helps prevent sportsbooks from taking losses like in the real world when their books are unbalanced, like in 2 of the last 3 Super Bowls. Market research estimates the virtual sports betting market at $17.6B in 2026 and projects it to grow to $57B by 2033. Looking to take advantage of the trend, Inspired Entertainment ( INSE ) announced that BetMGM ( MGM ) ( GMVHF ) and Borgata Online have launched its Virtual Sports (V-Sports) titles (V-Play Soccer, V-Play Basketball, and the NFL-themed V-Play Football) on their New Jersey sports betting platforms. The collaboration expands upon existing partnerships in Ontario, where the content has shown strong player engagement and sustained revenue growth. Inspired's (INSER) virtual sports combine broadcast-quality visuals with frequent betting opportunities, offering sportsbooks a steady flow of interactive content between live sporting events. The NFL-themed V-Play Football represents the first officially licensed NFL Virtual Sports experience, giving fans new ways to engage with professional football. Inspired CEO Brooks Pierce highlighted that sportsbooks integrating virtual sports within their main betting platforms, rather than online casinos, tend to achieve superior...

Three-month copper futures ( HG1:COM ) on the London Metal Exchange jumped as much as 3.5% to $12,741/ton, while aluminum ( LMAHDS03:COM ), the base metal most directly affected by supply concerns during the Middle East war, traded in a tight range at ~$3,460/ton. Among potentially relevant stocks: Freeport-McMoRan ( FCX ) up 6.5%, Southern Copper ( SCCO ) up 8.7%, Ero Copper ( ERO ) up 9.4%, Taseko Mines ( TGB ) up 10.4%, Teck Resources ( TECK ) up 8.1%, Hudbay Minerals ( HBM ) up 11%, BHP ( BHP ) up 5.5%, Rio Tinto ( RIO ) up 4.7%, Vale ( VALE ) up 3.3%. Among aluminum producers, Alcoa ( AA ) down 4.1% and Century Aluminum ( CENX ) down 4.4%, but Kaiser Aluminum ( KALU ) up 4.1% and Constellium ( CSTM ) up 4%. " Relief around shipping routes has been particularly supportive for sentiment," ING analysts said. "Looking ahead, metals prices will be shaped by whether the ceasefire evolves into a more durable agreement, alongside U.S. monetary policy expectations, with Federal Reserve communication, inflation data and real-yield dynamics as key near‑term drivers." However, given the temporary nature of the ceasefire, metals markets will struggle to return to the liquidity-driven rally seen at the start of the year, Shuohe Asset Management analyst Gao Yin told Bloomberg. Nadzeya Haroshka/iStock via Getty Images An International Monetary Fund analysis on Wednesday cautioned that rising military budgets could create economic challenges in the years ahead, even as they provide a short-term boost. The report finds that increased defense outlays tend to support growth initially by lifting demand, investment and activity. Over time, however, these gains are often offset by higher government borrowing, rising debt levels and weaker fiscal positions. Deficits worsen by about 2.6 percentage points of GDP, and public debt increases by about 7 percentage points within three years of the start of a boom (14 percentage points in wartime). (IMF) IMF economists note that escalating geopolitical tensions and a growing number of conflicts have prompted many countries to reassess security priorities and expand military spending. Nations across Europe, including Germany and France, have stepped up defense budgets in response to the war in Ukraine and pressure from the United States to shoulder more of their own security burden. Using data spanning more than 160 countries since 1946, the IMF identified over 200 periods of sustained defense spending increases. These cycles typically last more than two years, with roughly two-thirds of the additional spending financed through deficits. The fiscal impact is more pronounced during wartime. In such periods, public debt tends to rise sharply while spending on social programs can decline in real terms, highlighting the trade-offs policymakers face when allocating resources. The IMF defines a defense spending surge as a sustained rise in military outlays of at least 1% of gross domestic product based on a two-year average. The findings come at a time of heightened uncertainty in global markets, with ongoing geopolitical tensions and conflicts raising concerns about economic growth and fiscal sustainability. Estimated 2,000 ships, including oil and gas tankers and cruise liners, remain trapped in the Persian Gulf since start of war There will be no “mass exodus” of ships through the strait of Hormuz, shipping analysts say, despite a two-week conditional ceasefire being agreed between the US and Iran with provision for the temporary reopening of the crucial maritime channel. The ceasefire agreement “doesn’t change the situation in the sense that Iran is still in control”, said Richard Meade, the editor-in-chief at the maritime data provider Lloyd’s List Intelligence. “It still requires ships to essentially seek permission, and that’s the key. That means that nothing has changed – no permission, no transit.” Continue reading...
