The dollar index (DXY00) recovered from a 1.5-week low on Wednesday and finished up by +0.08%. The dollar moved higher after Wednesday's better-than-expected US Jan payroll report pushed T-note yields higher and dampened speculation of additional Fed interest rate cuts. The chance of a Fed rate cut at next month's FOMC meeting fell to 6% from 23% before the release of Wednesday's monthly payroll report. Hawkish comments on Wednesday from Kansas City Fed President Jeff Schmid also supported the dollar when he said the Fed should hold rates at a "somewhat restrictive" level. US MBA mortgage applications fell -0.3% in the week ended February 6, with the purchase mortgage sub-index down -2.4% and the refinancing mortgage sub-index up +1.2%. The average 30-year fixed mortgage rate was unchanged from the prior week at 6.21%. Join 200K+ Subscribers: US Jan nonfarm payrolls rose +130,000, stronger than expectations of +65,000 and the most in 13 months. The Jan unemployment rate unexpectedly fell -0.1 to 4.3%, showing a stronger labor market than expectations of no change at 4.4%. US Jan average hourly earnings rose +3.7% y/y, right on expectations. The annual benchmark revision to 2025 US payrolls subtracted -862,000 jobs, a larger revision than the -825,000 expected. Kansas City Fed President Jeff Schmid said, "In my view, further rate cuts risk allowing high inflation to persist even longer," so the Fed should hold rates at a "somewhat restrictive" level. The dollar sank to a 4-year low late last month when President Trump said he's comfortable with the recent weakness in the dollar. Also, the dollar remains under pressure as foreign investors pull capital from the US amid a growing budget deficit, fiscal profligacy, and widening political polarization. Swaps markets are discounting the odds at 6% for a -25 bp rate cut at the next policy meeting on March 17-18. The dollar continues to see underlying weakness as the FOMC is expected to cut interest rates by about -50 bp in...

March WTI crude oil (CLH26) on Wednesday closed up +0.67 (+1.05%), and March RBOB gasoline (RBH26) closed up +0.0197 (+1.01%). Crude oil and gasoline prices settled higher on Wednesday, with crude posting a 1.5-week high and gasoline posting a 2.75-month high. Escalating US-Iran tensions are underpinning crude prices after the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday said the US is considering seizing tankers with Iranian crude, and Axios reported that the US could send a second aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East should nuclear talks with Iran fail. Crude prices fell from their best levels on Wednesday after weekly EIA crude and gasoline inventories rose more than expected. Don’t Miss a Day: Escalation of geopolitical risk in the Middle East has added a risk premium to crude oil, supporting prices. The Wall Street Journal said Wednesday that the US has discussed seizing tankers carrying Iranian oil. Also, Axios reported that the US is considering sending a second aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East to prepare for military action should nuclear talks with Iran fail. The US Department of Transportation on Monday issued a maritime advisory stating that American-flagged ships should stay as far as possible from Iranian waters when navigating the Strait of Hormuz. Iran is OPEC's fourth-largest producer, and a US attack on the country could disrupt its 3.3 million bpd of crude production and potentially close the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of the world's oil passes. Wednesday's monthly US jobs report was stronger than expected and is supportive of energy demand and crude prices. Jan nonfarm payrolls rose +130,000, stronger than expectations of +65,000 and the most in 13 months. Also, the Jan unemployment rate unexpectedly fell -0.1 to 4.3%, showing a stronger labor market than expectations of no change at 4.4%. An increase in crude exports from Venezuela is also boosting global oil supplies and is bearish for prices. Reuters reported last...

Lewis Gibson did his best to smile, but the pained pinch on Lilah Fear’s face gave the game away. The Team GB pair had spent years dreaming of becoming the first British Olympic skating medallists since Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean. But when it really mattered they suffered a nightmare on ice. Gold went to the French couple Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron with 225.82 points, with the US team of Madison Chock and Evan Bates, the reigning three-time reigning world champions, having to settle for silver on 224.39 points. The Canadian pair of Paul Poirier and Piper Gilles claimed bronze with 217.73. Long behind them were Fear and Gibson in seventh. In truth, their night was over before it had really begun. No sooner had the crowd started to boisterously clap to the Proclaimers’ I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles), than Fear stumbled and lost her balance through the twizzle sequence. One yellow box, a signal of a technical error, quickly became two. And while the British pair held it together in a classy denouement to Auld Lang Syne, their score in the free dance of 118.35 – 12th overall in the section – told the story. Before the final dancers took to the ice, the crowd at the Milano Ice Skating Arena were introduced to Torvill and Dean, who were here to cheer on Fear and Gibson, who they had mentored during the embryonic stages of their partnership. Inevitably they were asked about the Bolero, a routine that remains the epitome of British sporting perfection even with 42 years’ distance. The long row of perfect sixes. The sensuality and impossible drama. The skating revolution dressed in purple-dyed silk chiffon. View image in fullscreen Gold medal winners Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron of France. A decade later millions also shared in the agony as Torvill and Dean were controversially awarded bronze in Lilleh...

Just_Super/E+ via Getty Images The Sprott Lithium Miners ETF ( LITP ) is a passively managed exchange-traded fund designed to provide investors with exposure to the global lithium industry. With the battery market widely divided between a challenged EV market environment in the US while dominated by Chinese manufacturers and the growing demand for battery storage capacity for utilities and data centers, the lithium industry may be poised for high-demand growth. Despite the shifting economics for the lithium industry, many of the constituents are pre-revenue or report operating losses, creating uncertainty as to whether LITP will be priced based on fundamentals or momentum of the underlying holdings. With relatively thin liquidity and a high bid/ask spread, trading LITP on momentum may create certain challenges for investors, adding costs to the investment outlay. Given the market dynamics and trading environment for LITP, I am assigning the ETF a Sell rating. Investment Case For LITP Off the cuff, lithium prices have been undergoing a recovery in recent months following multiple years of price decline. Trading Economics One of the growing concerns that led to the recent pullback in the price of lithium was growing concerns as to whether battery storage demand will be as strong as previously expected. Despite these headwinds, battery storage capacity is expected to be a critical factor for large-scale data center power reliability, particularly as certain data center operators are planning to leverage renewable energy sources for load capacity. As a component of the renewable energy theme, Wood Mackenzie estimates that $1.2t in battery energy storage systems investments will be needed to support the global installed base of 5,900 GW of renewable capacity by 2034. Accordingly, the global power sector is estimated to have a capacity gap of 1,400 GW of battery capacity needed to stabilize the grid between 2024 and 2034, presenting a large growth opportunity for industri...

Last May, law enforcement authorities around the world scored a key win when they hobbled the infrastructure of Lumma, an infostealer that infected nearly 395,000 Windows computers over just a two-month span leading up to the international operation. Researchers said Wednesday that Lumma is once again “back at scale” in hard-to-detect attacks that pilfer credentials and sensitive files. Lumma, also known as Lumma Stealer, first appeared in Russian-speaking cybercrime forums in 2022. Its cloud-based malware-as-a-service model provided a sprawling infrastructure of domains for hosting lure sites offering free cracked software, games, and pirated movies, as well as command-and-control channels and everything else a threat actor needed to run their infostealing enterprise. Within a year, Lumma was selling for as much as $2,500 for premium versions. By the spring of 2024, the FBI counted more than 21,000 listings on crime forums. Last year, Microsoft said Lumma had become the “go-to tool” for multiple crime groups, including Scattered Spider, one of the most prolific groups. Takedowns are hard The FBI and an international coalition of its counterparts took action early last year. In May, they said they seized 2,300 domains, command-and-control infrastructure, and crime marketplaces that had enabled the infostealer to thrive. Recently, however, the malware has made a comeback, allowing it to infect a significant number of machines again. Read full article Comments

Solana has some big developments in its pipeline this year. Since its launch in 2020, Solana (SOL 3.16%) has stood out from other programmable blockchains for its performance. Transactions process in seconds, and transaction fees are well under $0.01. Successful blockchains are constantly evolving, and Solana is no exception. This year is shaping up to be a big one for Solana, as there are two major technical upgrades scheduled. The first is Alpenglow, a new consensus protocol to replace its current system of validating transactions. While Solana's existing consensus protocol is fast, it has some limitations. Transaction finalization takes about 12 to 13 seconds, for starters. With Alpenglow, it will drop to as low as 100-150 milliseconds. Alpenglow also improves the network's security. It provides "20+20" resilience, meaning the network remains safe even if 20% of the validation nodes act maliciously and another 20% are offline. In addition, Solana will release the full version of its Firedancer validator client software. Firedancer could drastically improve Solana's transaction processing, as it handled up to 1 million transactions per second (tps) in testing. It's also more bug-resistant than the previous validator client, Agave. Firedancer breaks each validator's task into separate tiles, which keeps issues contained. If there's a bug, the validator can simply restart that tile. Solana also runs a bug bounty program for Firedancer, offering bounties of up to $500,000. Solana is currently running a hybrid software with elements of Firedancer and Agave, known as Frankendancer. The full release is expected later this year. Meta Platforms' ( META ) auditor Ernst & Young raised a red flag over the social media giant's decision to keep a $27B data center project off its balance sheet, according to The Wall Street Journal . Although the auditor eventually signed off on the decision, it still highlighted the move as a "critical audit matter," the report said. The project, dubbed Hyperion, was relocated into a new joint venture with Blue Owl Capital. Meta owns 20% of the venture, while funds managed by Blue Owl constitute the rest. Since Meta is not the "primary beneficiary" of this project, it did not find it necessary to include it on its balance sheet. Ernst and Young said the decision "was especially challenging due to the significant judgment required in determining the activities that most significantly affect the VIE's economic performance," the report said. U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and three other senators sent a letter to U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in late January. They asked Bessent to investigate the risks to the overall financial system due to AI-related debt, the report said. They specifically pointed out the Blue Owl and Meta joint venture. The Hyperion data center is a massive project being constructed in rural, northeastern Louisiana. It is designed to provide 2 gigawatts of capacity with the potential to scale up to 5 GW. The 4-million-square-foot facility will be located on more than 2,200 acres. "We are proud to be part of the Richland Parish community, and we look forward to continuing to strengthen our partnership for years to come," said Rachel Peterson , Meta's vice president of data centers. "Construction is well underway with thousands of construction workers on site, and, once online, the project will support over 500 operational jobs." "Our AI ambitions will be realized through our ability to deliver the infrastructure to support it," added Meta Chief Financial Officer Susan Li. Evangelos Marinakis often takes action when the crowd turns against a head coach. The Nottingham Forest owner watched from his throne, enduring 90 minutes of inept finishing and sloppy play in a desperate goalless draw against rock‑bottom Wolves, resulting in boos and insults aimed at Sean Dyche at full time, which sealed a third head coach sacking of the season. Thirty-five shots came and went for Forest, few testing José Sá but the patience of the crowd was thoroughly tested, ultimately costing Dyche his job. It was a missed opportunity for the hosts, who moved only one point further north of 18th-placed West Ham, when three were there for the taking. The players, ultimately, struggled to adapt to Dyche’s methods and were unhappy over the final weeks of his tenure. It was a key reason why Marinakis decided to act in the hours after the match, with the club expecting to make a quick appointment. “There’s no lack of respect for me from the owner here, he’s been first class to me since I’ve been here,” Dyche said. “People can demand change and then it’s up to the owners whether they change it or not. I just work very hard. I care about this club, I’ve made that clear, so do my staff. I’m working very hard, I’m not saying the players are not by the way, but we certainly are as a staff. If the owner wants to make a change, that’s the way football is now.” Dyche was not here to bring cutting edge, instead to fix the problems left behind by Ange Postecoglou, after the ill-judged exit of Nuno Espírito Santo. The former Burnley manager has lost only once in six games but things are never so straightforward at Forest but the style of football became grating. “Nottingham Forest Football Club can confirm that Sean Dyche has been relieved of his duties as head coach,” a Forest statement read. “We would like to thank Sean and his staff for their efforts during their time at the Club and we wish them the best of luck for the future. We will be making no further comment at this t...

March Nymex natural gas (NGH26) on Wednesday closed up by +0.044 (+1.41%). March nat-gas prices recovered from a 4-week nearest-futures low on Wednesday and moved higher as short-covering emerged in anticipation of a greater-than-normal withdrawal of US nat-gas storage levels. The consensus is that Thursday's weekly EIA nat-gas inventories will decline by -257 bcf for the week ended February 6, a much larger draw than the five-year average for this time of year of -146 bcf. Don’t Miss a Day: Nat-gas prices initially moved lower on Wednesday amid forecasts of above-average US temperatures, which will reduce nat-gas heating demand. The Commodity Weather Group said Wednesday that forecasts shifted overnight to show even warmer weather across the eastern two-thirds of the US through February 20. Projections for higher US nat-gas production are also bearish for prices. The EIA on Tuesday raised its forecast for 2026 US dry nat-gas production to 109.97 bcf/day from last month's estimate of 108.82 bcf/day. US nat-gas production is currently near a record high, with active US nat-gas rigs last Friday posting a 2.5-year high. Natural gas prices surged to a 3-year high on January 28, driven by the massive storm that disrupted the US with Arctic cold weather. The well below normal temperatures caused freeze-ups in gas wells, disrupted production in Texas and elsewhere, and drove a spike in demand for natural gas for heating. About 50 billion cubic feet of natural gas came offline, or about 15% of total US natural gas production, due to freeze-ups. US (lower-48) dry gas production on Wednesday was 112.8 bcf/day (+7.1% y/y), according to BNEF. Lower-48 state gas demand on Wednesday was 99.0 bcf/day (-11.7% y/y), according to BNEF. Estimated LNG net flows to US LNG export terminals on Wednesday were 19.6 bcf/day (-0.1% w/w), according to BNEF. As a bullish factor for gas prices, the Edison Electric Institute reported Wednesday that US (lower-48) electricity output in the week end...
