But the price that I pay for that growth had better be appropriate. Otherwise, the opportunity in question is a pass. This has resulted in me avoiding significant losses in the past. But at the same time, one downside has been that I sometimes take a more cautious approach to a company only to see the share price rise drastically. A good example of this can be seen by looking at Dutch Bros ( BROS ), a drive-thru shop owner that focuses on beverage sales. Back in September of 2023, I wrote my first-ever article about the business. I called it a solid prospect for growth investors. However, the price was too high to justify anything other than a neutral outlook for me. Since rating the company a 'hold' back then, the stock has jumped 84.1%. That's well above the 52.5% increase that the S&P 500 saw over the same window of time. And this doesn't even include the 12.3% jump that the stock saw after the market closed on February 12th. This surge higher came after management announced financial results for the final quarter of the company's 2025 fiscal year. Revenue, earnings per share, and adjusted earnings per share, all came in above what analysts were hoping to see. This is great in and of itself. But still, even with this and even with the promise from management of additional growth over the next couple of years, shares are priced at levels that are difficult to get behind. Because of the rapid expansion that we are seeing, I won't go so far as to take a bearish stance on the business. But I do think that a cautious 'hold' rating makes the most sense here. I first highlighted the company as a value investment opportunity back in 2023 when shares traded at a P/B value of ~0.4x. A share buyback program offered a catalyst for the company's shares. Since then, JXN is up 296%, while total return is 348%. Despite this surge, shares are still undervalued. JXN has raised its distribution every year since going public as a standalone company in 2021, while also reducing the number of shares outstanding. Based on its low valuation, it will probably raise its dividend again this year. Data by YCharts Compared to the financial sector, JXN's 2.7% dividend yield isn't shabby. However, income-oriented investors might be interested in JXN's Series A Preferred Equity ( JXN.PR.A ), offering a higher and more predictable yield. JXN.PR.A isn't cumulative.
